  • Concerto for Turntables and Orchestra Gabriel Prokofiev Teacher Pages
SECONDARY 10 PIECES PLUS! CONCERTO FOR TURNTABLES AND ORCHESTRA (5th MOVEMENT) by GABRIEL PROKOFIEV TEACHER PAGES CONCERTO FOR TURNTABLES AND ORCHESTRA (5TH MOVEMENT) BY GABRIEL PROKOFIEV http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p038md89 CONTEXT Gabriel Prokofiev is the grandson of Sergei Prokofiev, the famous Russian composer and contemporary of Shostakovich. Gabriel is a musician who has been involved in hip hop, dance, electro, grime, scratching and turntablism. He has become interested in the fusion of different styles of music and decided to write a Concerto for Turntables and Orchestra where sounds created by the orchestra could be combined with turntable techniques. Turntablism comes from the 1970’s Hip Hop style. The records on the turntables are scratched rhythmically, responding to the music being played: this technique is used in the Prokofiev concerto. The DJ manipulates the sounds on the vinyl records changing tonal and rhythmic patterns. The records used in the piece contain music samples of orchestral phrases. A concerto is an orchestral piece of music which features a soloist, or small group of soloists who are virtuoso performers. The soloist usually has the main ideas and maintains a dialogue with the orchestra throughout the music. As with any instrumentalist, the DJ requires plenty of practice to become skilful in the technique of manipulating sounds. The concerto usually contains a ‘cadenza’, which is a passage where the soloist can show off his or her skills. Concerto for Turntables and Orchestra was written in 2006 and was

The groundbreaking record was not only massive for rock and hip-hop, but for the lives of Beastie Boys members, Adam “MCA” Yauch, Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz and Michael “Mike D” Diamond. With the success of the record and careers that followed, it’s easy to look back at the 1986 version of the trio and label them purposeful geniuses. Take nothing away from the NYC rappers, but during the time they were just a bunch of Jewish kids trying to make each other laugh with nonsensical dorm-room-raps. Turns out that’s exactly what the world needed. Here are eight things you never knew about their debut album, License To Ill . 1. The Rick Rubin Injection. The now well established, hairy and sought after producer was far from that in 1986.

Excellent book by legendary hip hop DJ HurricaneBy Malik BrownExcellent book by legendary hip hop DJ Hurricane, who is still active and spinning the wheels of steel with style, precision, and grace. DJ Hurricane successfully narrates the origins of the breakthrough music genre that has transcended time and cultures. His rough and tumble youthful experiences and determined struggle to avoid becoming a statistic detail a roadmap for today's youth whether they are contemplating a music career or not. The positive affirmations and reinforcements in this book should be required reading for anyone who wants to live their dreams. You may want to give some background on Hip-Hop as an important social and musical movement which has been embraced by those who feel marginalized. Step Two: Write Hip-Hop on the center of the white or black board. Begin a discussion with the students by asking what they think about Hip-Hop. Focus on one word answers and facilitate responses by asking what images come to mind, what Hip-Hop artists the students are familiar with, and what topics Hip-Hop discusses. Create a word web with the students’ responses. Step Three: Handout the Hip-Hop Artists handout with just the pictures of the artists. Ask the students to read the directions, and then read the directions aloud to the students.
