INTERVIEW DU RAPPEUR M1 (DEAD PREZ) SUR ASSATA SHAKUR Dans cette interview réalisée en juillet 20051, M1 du groupe Dead Prez présente la campagne « Hands off Assata » (« Ne touchez pas à Assata Shakur »), lancée suite à la mise à prix de la tête d’Assata Shakur pour 1 million de dollars par le gouvernement américain, le 2 mai 2005. Assata Shakur était classée « terroriste intérieure » par le FBI. Cette mise à prix était l’aboutissement de plus d’une décennie d’offensive des politiciens conservateurs, des lobby policiers et des milieux cubains anti-castristes. En 1998, le Congrès adoptait une résolution demandant au gouvernement cubain l’extradition de 90 réfugiés politiques, dont Assata Shakur. Après la mise à prix de 2005, les pressions pour obtenir son extradition s’intensifièrent, notamment après la passation de pouvoir entre les frères Castro. En 2013, la prime passe à 2 millions de dollars et Assata Shakur devient la première femme à figurer dans la liste des « terroristes les plus recherchés » par le FBI, 40 ans après la fusillade dans le New Jersey qui aboutit à la mort d’un flic et de Zayd Shakur2, et 30 ans après son évasion de prison3. La campagne « Hands off Assata », destinée à obtenir l’annulation de la mise à prix en clamant « Assata est ici chez elle », dénonçait ce qu’elle concevait comme un appel aux « mercenaires pour kidnapper et tuer » Assata, en violant la souveraineté de Cuba, et insistait sur la nécessité de faire d’Assata Shakur le symbole de la lutte, passée et présente, des communautés noires américaines contre le racisme et l’impérialisme. -

Horton 2019 ABSTRACT Working Against Racism from White Subject Positions: White Anti-Racism, New Abolitionism & Intersectional Anti-White Irish Diasporic Nationalism by Matthew W. Horton Doctor of Philosophy in Education and the Designated Emphasis in Critical Theory University of California, Berkeley Professor Na’ilah Nasir, Chair This dissertation is an intervention into Critical Whiteness Studies, an ‘additional movement’ to Ethnic Studies and Critical Race Theory. It systematically analyzes key contradictions in working against racism from a white subject positions under post-Civil Rights Movement liberal color-blind white hegemony and "Black Power" counter-hegemony through a critical assessment of two major competing projects in theory and practice: white anti-racism [Part 1] and New Abolitionism [Part 2]. I argue that while white anti-racism is eminently practical, its efforts to hegemonically rearticulate white are overly optimistic, tend toward renaturalizing whiteness, and are problematically dependent on collaboration with people of color. I further argue that while New Abolitionism has popularized and advanced an alternative approach to whiteness which understands whiteness as ‘nothing but oppressive and false’ and seeks to ‘abolish the white race’, its ultimately class-centered conceptualization of race and idealization of militant nonconformity has failed to realize effective practice. -

These teachings come from the rich vanguard of African spiritual and liberation traditions, past and present. Carruthers, Dr. Maulana Karenga, Dr. Chancellor Williams, Dr. Ben Jochannan, Dr. Muata Abhaya Ashby, Dr. Amos Wilson, Dr. Francis Cress Welsing, and our ancestors, Dr. Henrik Clark and Cheikh Anta Diop. This book is also composed heavily of teachings from the Taoist tradition, as elucidated by Master Ni Hua Ching, and the Hindu spiritual tradition, as elucidated by Sri Aurobindo. Preface Viviane Saleh-Hanna and Ashanti Omowali Alston n May 26, 2006, this issue of the Journal of Prisoners on Prisons was Oinitiated through the circulation of this letter: Journal of Prisoners on Prisons: A Special Black Panther Political Prisoners Issue Greeting Good People! This is a special invitation, from Ashanti Alston and Viviane Saleh-Hanna asking you to help us produce this Special Issue of the Journal of Prisoners on Prisons. It is dedicated to the Political Prisoners of the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army. In the same spirit of this journal, this issue will be the words of the political prisoners themselves, along with those in exile and former political prisoners. For many, it has been over three decades of imprisonment in the face of mountainous fi les of Counter-Intelligence Program operations (federal/state/local) and present “Criminal-Justice” intransigence in setting these black revolutionary servants of the people free. Several of these servants have already “died” in prison—needlessly. How many more? Let this Special Issue contribute to highlighting Criminal-Justice in the United States of America and renewing our passion in fi ghting for the freedom of the political prisoners and for the completion of the revolutionary project of creating new world humanities. The Journal of Prisoners on Prisons (JPP) has worked for 15 years to bring forth the voices of prisoners, and has done a political prisoners issue in the past with revolutionaries in Ireland. Their 15th anniversary issue (published by the University of Ottawa Press) will be dedicated to the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army. -

By Cecilia Cissell Lucas Doctor of Philosophy in Education University of California, Berkeley Professor Patricia Baquedano-López, Chair This interdisciplinary study examines the question of decolonizing the white colonizer in the United States. After establishing the U.S. as a nation-state built on and still manifesting a colonial tradition of white supremacy which necessitates multifaceted decolonization, the dissertation asks and addresses two questions: 1) what particular issues need to be taken into account when attempting to decolonize the white colonizer and 2) how might the white colonizer participate in decolonization processes? Many scholars in the fields this dissertation draws on -- Critical Race Theory, Critical Ethnic Studies, Coloniality and Decolonial Theory, Language Socialization, and Performance Studies -- have offered incisive analyses of colonial white supremacy, and assume a transformation of white subjectivities as part of the envisioned transformation of social, political and economic relationships. However, in regards to processes of decolonization, most of that work is focused on the decolonization of political and economic structures and on decolonizing the colonized. The questions pursued in this dissertation do not assume a simplistic colonizer/colonized binary but recognize the saliency of geo- and bio-political positionalities. -

Williams1 Abstract Racial justice social movements often fragment when their goals do not seem completely achievable. Former participants in the radical Black freedom struggles of the 1960s and 1970s, most of whom were Black Panther Party (BPP) members (and also participants in the Black Liberation Army) and identified with Marxist-Leninism, became disaffected with the hierarchical character of the Black Panthers and came to identify with anarchism. Through the lens of radical factionalization theories, Black anarchism is seen as a radical outgrowth of the Black freedom struggle. Black anarchists were the first to notably prioritize a race analysis in American anarchism. This tendency has a number of contemporary manifestations for anarchism, including Anarchist People of Color caucuses within the movement, and, more indirectly, the many anarchist strategies and organizations that share similarities with the BPP, prior to its centralization. ABSTRACT Title of dissertation: SLAVE SHIPS, SHAMROCKS, AND SHACKLES: TRANSATLANTIC CONNECTIONS IN BLACK AMERICAN AND NORTHERN IRISH WOMEN’S REVOLUTIONARY AUTO/BIOGRAPHICAL WRITING, 1960S-1990S Amy L. Washburn, Doctor of Philosophy, 2010 Dissertation directed by: Professor Deborah S. Rosenfelt Department of Women’s Studies This dissertation explores revolutionary women’s contributions to the anti-colonial civil rights movements of the United States and Northern Ireland from the late 1960s to the late 1990s. I connect the work of Black American and Northern Irish revolutionary women leaders/writers involved in the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), Black Panther Party (BPP), Black Liberation Army (BLA), the Republic for New Afrika (RNA), the Soledad Brothers’ Defense Committee, the Communist Party- USA (Che Lumumba Club), the Jericho Movement, People’s Democracy (PD), the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association (NICRA), the Irish Republican Socialist Party (IRSP), the National H-Block/ Armagh Committee, the Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA), Women Against Imperialism (WAI), and/or Sinn Féin (SF), among others by examining their leadership roles, individual voices, and cultural productions. This project analyses political communiqués/ petitions, news coverage, prison files, personal letters, poetry and short prose, and memoirs of revolutionary Black American and Northern Irish women, all of whom were targeted, arrested, and imprisoned for their political activities. I highlight the personal correspondence, auto/biographical narratives, and poetry of the following key leaders/writers: Angela Y. Davis and Bernadette Devlin McAliskey; Assata Shakur and Margaretta D’Arcy; Ericka Huggins and Roseleen Walsh; Afeni Shakur-Davis, Joan Bird, Safiya Bukhari, and Martina Anderson, Ella O’Dwyer, and Mairéad Farrell. -

But Uhuru Foods & Pies is about so much more than producing tasty edibles. Named for the Swahili word for “freedom,” Uhuru Foods & Pies is a subsidiary of Black Star Industries (BSI), a black-led self-determination program of the African People’s Socialist Party (APSP), the worldwide organization building for African liberation and unification. Uhuru Foods & Pies is not a business owned by an individual, but a part of an independent African economy that African people are building to once again own and control our resources, including our own land, food production and distribution. For over 30 years, it has been operated by dedicated volunteer teams who unite with our mission to create, produce and sell the freshest foods to build self sustaining economic development designed for the prosperity and self-determination of present and future generations of African people worldwide. In 1972, when organizers formed the African People’s Socialist Party, they understood that economic self-reliance and self-determination were a necessity to carrying out the goals 1 of the liberation struggle. The campaigns and programs of the APSP also had to be funded, and could not be dependent on resources from others. -

In the Spring of 1992, several of us who have done defense work in support of political prisoners and prisoners of war in the u.s. wrote and asked the prisoners to comment on the Columbus madness. This booklet represents the unedited complete text of all the responses we got. As such, this collection is not reflective of the breadth of national struggle within these borders, nor of the proportion of revolutionary women spending their lives behind bars. To the prisoners who responded: Thanks! To those who didn't, we hope that our letters reached you through the prison censors. What a year this has been. Smirking at the end of the war en Iraq, the imperialists started celebrating 500 years of genocide, rape, racism and conquest All over the world, their celebrations have been met with resistance. Wherever the replicas of the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria have landed, Native American activists and others have demonstrated and disrupted. Right now, the corporation which contracted to bring the boats over is nearly bankrupt, and some of their engagements have been canceled.
