Call no.: MS 332 Collection overview Born in Torringford, Connecticut in 1806, and educated at the Torringford Academy and Berkshire Medical College (MD 1827), Erasmus Darwin Hudson became well known as a radical reformer. While establishing his medical practice in Bloomfield, Conn., and later in Springfield, Mass., and New York City, Hudson emerged as a force in the antislavery struggle, hewing to the non-resistant line. Touring the northeastern states as a lecturing agent for the Connecticut Anti-Slavery Society and general agent of the American Anti- Slavery Society, he regularly contributing articles to an antislavery periodicals and befriended many of the movement's leaders. In his professional life as an orthopedic surgeon, Hudson earned acclaim for his contributions to the development of modern prosthetics. During the carnage of the Civil War, he introduced remarkable improvements in artificial limb technology and innovations in the treatment of amputations and battle trauma, winning awards for his contributions at international expositions in Paris (1867) and Philadelphia (1876). Hudson died of pneumonia on Dec. 31, 1880. Spanning five generations of a family of physicians and social reformers, the Hudson Family Papers include particularly significant content for Erasmus Darwin Hudson documenting his activities with the Connecticut and American Anti-Slavery societies. Hudson's journals and writings are accompanied by a rich run of correspondence with antislavery figures such as Abby Kelley, Wendell Phillips, Frederick Douglass, William Lloyd Garrison, Isaac Hopper, and Samuel May and a unique antislavery campaign map of New York State and surrounding areas (1841).

English ministers visiting in America sided with one group of Friends and denounced the others as unsound. Thus it seemed reasonable and proper to recognize the yearly meetings called "Orthodox," and to ostracize the other branch called "Hicksite," which meant they were no longer to be thought of as Quakers. As other splits came in the United States, the British Friends chose in each situation to recognize one branch and ostracize the others.

As the northernmost southern city in a state that bordered three slave states, Philadelphia maintained a long tradition of abolitionism and fugitive slave activity. Conflicts that arose over fugitive slaves and the kidnapping of free African-Americans forced Philadelphians to confront the politics of slavery. This dissertation argues that until 1847, Pennsylvania was in effect a slave state. The work of proslavery groups, namely slave masters, their agents, white and black kidnappers, and local, state, and national political supporters, undermined the ostensible successes of state laws designed to protect the freedom of African-Americans in Pennsylvania. Commonly referred to as “liberty laws,” this legislation exposed the inherent difficulty in determining the free or enslaved status of not only fugitive slaves but also African-American kidnapping victims. By studying the specific fugitive or kidnapping cases that inspired these liberty laws, one finds that time and again African-Americans and their allies forced white politicians to grapple with the reality that Pennsylvania was not a safe-haven for African-Americans, regardless of their condition of bondage or freedom.

    Sarah Douglass and Racial Prejudice within the Society of Friends A Pendle Hill lecture given by Margaret Hope Bacon Several months ago we were discussing at the dinner table the perennial question, why was the Society of Friends experiencing such difficulty in attracting blacks to its meetings, retirement centers, and institutions such as Pendle Hill. A wise, kind, elderly man asked the question, didn’t most blacks after all prefer to go to their own churches. Didn’t they find the Quaker form of worship incompatible? Didn’t they miss the music and excitement? I thought immediately of Sarah Mapps Douglass, a nineteenth century black Quaker educator, and a debate she held over 150 years ago with a correspondent for the Orthodox Quaker journal, The Friend, who signed himself P. R. P.R. blamed the fact that few blacks had joined Friends to his belief that they were uncomfortable with Quaker worship. “The fact is,” P. R. wrote, “Very few of them incline to attend our meetings. Friends’ mode of worship does not suit their dispositions; they are fond of music and excitement, and hence they prefer their own meetings where they regularly hear singing and preaching.”1 Sarah Douglass wrote a long, spirited letter in reply, and when The Friend failed to publish it, submitted to the National Anti-Slavery Standard. In it she argued that many blacks would attend Quaker meeting if they were not asked to sit on the segregated back bench, and treated with coldness. “I myself know some, whose hearts yearn for the quiet of your worshipping places, and who love the ‘still small voice.’ better than harp or viol.”2 Douglass was not the first black Quaker to protest discrimination within the Society of Friends, but she was the first to make her protest public.

    Women’s History Month – Stories of the Women of Linden Place The complex intersections of history: Rosalie DeWolf and John Hopper In a previous installment, we learned that George DeWolf hired architect Russell Warren to build his new mansion on Hope Street in 1810. George and his wife Charlotte Goodwin’s oldest child, Buckmaster, had been born in 1805. Mariana followed in 1811, then Charlotte, then Theodora, and in 1825 little baby Julia, who died that year on December 6th. 1825 was a horrible year for George – shipwrecks, a failed sugar crop, and investment losses forced him to sign papers of bankruptcy. According to the reports made by George Howe, his assets fell short of his debts by $300,000. The family fled to their plantation in Cuba. Commercial Bank held the mortgage to the mansion and sold the paper to James deWolf.1 Two years later, James sold it to his son William Henry – but the deed was ultimately transferred to the name of his wife, Sarah Rogers DeWolf. Four daughters were part of the family in the mansion on Hope Street: Rosalie, born in 1826; Sarah Ann, born in 1833; Mary, born in 1835; and Madeline, born in 1838. Rosalie DeWolf was born in what became known as the Perry homestead, at the corner of High and Union Streets. An article in the Bristol Phoenix of January 1910 says “Soon after her birth her parents purchased Linden Place and went there to reside and there six more children were born to them, two sons and four daughters. Miss Rosalie was considered the most beautiful and attractive girl in Bristol, having a charm of manner and personality that remained with her all her life.

He was a runaway from a slave planta- tion in New Jersey and had been sleeping rough at different spots in Philadelphia for the last few nights. Probably hungry and surely stiff, Scomp set out toward the docks at the end of Market Street. His plan was to try to earn enough money to buy breakfast by helping ships’ crews cart barrels and boxes from their holds into town. Just fifteen years old, Scomp was young and strong, but he did not have his own wagon or wheelbarrow and barely knew anyone. So it must have seemed like a blessing when a mixed-race man walked up to Scomp to offer him work unloading a shipment of “Peaches, Oranges, Water Melons &c” from a small sloop at anchor out by the Navy Yard. The pay was twenty-five cents, and they could use a wagon already waiting for them at the ship.1 Richard Bell is associate professor of history at the University of Maryland.     FEATURE Seeking Freedom in the Courts: The Work of the Pennsylvania Society for promoting the Abolition of Slavery, and for the Relief of Free Negroes unlawfully held in Bondage, and for improving the Condition of the African Race, 1775–1865 By Christopher Densmore n the struggle between freedom and slavery, Pennsylvania was the border country. Even before the Pennsylvania Gradual Abolition IAct of 1780, voluntary manumissions of enslaved persons by Quakers and others had created a significant population of free people of color within a society where slavery was still legal. By the time of the first U.S. Census in 1790, almost two-thirds of Pennsylvania’s black population was free.
