REPORT OF THE TREASURER February 4, 2015

Our scholarship program continues to be the primary object of our fund-raising efforts. The Society distributed $72,000 during 2014 to sixteen scholarship students at eleven colleges and universities. We are most grateful for the generosity of our members who donated to our scholarship fund. Over $21,000 were donated by our members this year. This is in addition to members’ donations to Military Stars. The exciting new Military Stars Campaign, chaired by Jane Gonzalez, has received $132,340. More details on this important work are in Jane’s report.. We are most grateful for the generosity of our members who donated to our scholarship fund and to the Military Stars program and we urge our members to continue their generous support. This year we have 443 members: 177 regular members, 207 life members, ten junior members, twenty-five associate members and twenty-four overseas members. We met again with our financial advisor Bill Constantine and his team at Legg Mason Investment Counsel. Legg Mason has been purchased by Stifel Financial Corp. and its name has been changed to 19/19 Investment Counsel. The market value of our portfolio as of December 31, 2014, was $2,885,593. As of December 31, 2013, the portfolio market value was $2,735,482. Our portfolio increased by $150,111 in the past year. I want to express my deep appreciation to our president, Caroline Weintz, for her knowledge and interest in our portfolio and the use of our funds. And again, I want to thank our superb executive director, Rolly Woodyatt, for her very careful oversight of the reception and disbursement of our funds on a daily basis. Respectfully submitted, Caroline L. Brown Treasurer

Scholarship Fund—Restricted Minnie Ogden Happer Pruden, by bequest in her own memory, at Duke University, 1966. REPORT OF THE SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE February 4, 2015

On April 4, 2014, we celebrated our scholarship program, beginning with a wonderful guided tour of the newly restored Park Avenue Armory arranged by Gail Lloyd. After crossing Park Avenue, we enjoyed a delicious lunch at the Knickerbocker Club, arranged by Jane Gonzalez, with a few of our current scholarship recipients: Meghan Brooks and Rachel Wehr, both seniors at Harvard College, and Stephanie Burg, a senior at University of at Davis. We were also delighted to have one scholarship alumna in attendance, Kathryn McMaster, who brought us up to date on her post-college career. Last spring we received 119 completed applications from qualified and accomplished young women. After evaluation of their financial need and several weeks of consideration and review by the Scholarship Committee, and with the assistance of Dorothy Denburg, four scholarships were awarded for the class of 2018. These recipients are: • Allison Bushman, daughter of a retired lieutenant colonel in the air force, who is attending Yale University. • Nicole Daly, daughter of an active duty brigadier general in the army, who is attending Yale University. • Joanna Tan, daughter of an active duty commander in the navy, who is attending the College of William and Mary. • Taylor Whitworth, daughter of an active duty captain in the navy, who is attending Duke University. I would like to thank all those who contributed to last year's scholarship program and especially remember those who included generous gifts in their wills. In 2014, the Daughters expended a total of $72,000 in grants to support sixteen recipients. It is through these gifts that we are able to continue the wonderful tradition of our organization. I would also like to highlight the inspiring work of Jane Gonzalez, Martha Glass, Louise Ducas, Caroline Weintz, and Betsy Scott for their efforts in overseeing the Military Stars campaign. A special thanks also goes to Jane Gonzalez and Nancy Talcott who are working on a video documenting our scholarship program; it will soon be available on our website. I would also like to thank the dedicated members of the scholarship committee for all their time in reviewing and analyzing the applications: Jane Gonzalez, Anne Nordeman, Eve Donatelli, Louise Ducas, Martha Glass, Eleanor Earle, Margaret Harbison, Jessica Smith, Suzanne Liebolt, and Caroline Weintz. Each member takes her task seriously, and our discussions are thoughtful and spirited. I’m delighted to announce that Nancy Talcott will be joining our committee next year. The implementation of the scholarship program would not be possible without the constant support of Rolly Woodyatt, our executive director, and the insights of Caroline Weintz, our president. We look forward to seeing you at the luncheon on Friday, April 10, 2015 at the Knickerbocker Club in New York City! Please mark your calendars. Respectfully submitted,

Deborah P. Mumm Scholarship Administrator

I am pleased to announce that over the past year eleven candidates have completed the application process and become new members of our society. Additionally, twelve candidates have been invited by the board of managers to become members. These candidates have received the line of descent application and are currently working through the membership process. I would like to thank our verifying genealogist, Mr. Michael Neill, and especially thank president Caroline Weintz, the membership committee, Mrs. Hynson Brown, Mrs. H. Bartholomew Cox, Mrs. Charles L. Fleming, Mrs. Jose Ramon Gonzalez, Mrs. James W. Harbison, Jr., Mrs. William M. Manger, and Mrs. Jacques C. Nordeman. Finally, I must thank executive director, Rolly Woodyatt, for her patience and continuous helpful advice. By right of descent from: #1596 Mrs. Alice Ann Mahon Jenkins Colonel Nicholas Long Houston, Texas #1597 Mrs. Dean Vincent Ashton Lieutenant Benjamin Lodge (Elizabeth Brier Meszaros) Babylon, New York #1598 Miss Vedana Warren Harloff Captain Abraham Williams Amsterdam, The Netherlands Massachusetts #1599 Mrs. Scott Andrew MacDonald Lieutenant Benjamin Lodge (Anne Elizabeth Meszaros) Pennsylvania Hampstead, North Carolina #1600 Mrs. Alan David Westheimer Captain Isaac Bolster (Ivis Lula Harriman) Massachusetts Houston, Texas #1601 Mrs. Roderick Russell Wilce Surgeon William Mead (Anne Fisk) New York Cary, North Carolina #1602 Miss Samantha Manger Fleming Major General Oliver Wolcott New York, New York Massachusetts #1603 Mrs. Brian Terrence Petrov Captain John Parke Custis (Barbara Ann McCormick) Virginia Pearland, Texas #1604 Miss Ainsley Emmons Walker Brigadier General Nathan Goodale Richmond, Virginia Massachusetts #1605 Miss McKenzie Moss Walker Brigadier General Nathan Goodale Richmond, Virginia Massachusetts #1606 Mrs. John Tracy Walker IV Brigadier General Nathan Goodale (Mary Moss Wagner) Massachusetts Richmond, Virginia

Captain Isaac Bolster, Surgeon William Mead, and Captain John Parke Custis represent new ancestor lines. Unlike the Society of the Cincinnati, the Daughters of the Cincinnati allow more than one member to represent an eligible ancestor. New members are the lifeblood of most organizations. For our society to continue to grow, all of our Daughters should recruit new members whenever possible. The process is straightforward, especially for family members. So please propose your sisters, daughters, granddaughters, and nieces to help the Daughters of the Cincinnati remain a strong society. Respectfully submitted, Mary Turner Meade Registrar REPORT ON THE MILITARY STARS CAMPAIGN February 4, 2015

Over the past fifty years, the Daughters has provided college grants to over 400 outstanding young women who are the daughters of career officers in the armed forces. These accomplished women attended 166 colleges and universities across the country. However, in recent years the number of scholarships has been limited to only four per year. In order to increase the number and amount of the awards, the Daughters initiated the Military Stars campaign in March 2013. To date the Military Stars Campaign has raised $123,340 for the scholarship program plus an additional $9000 specifically for the production of an informational film to aid in the fund-raising efforts. Nancy Talcott, a documentary film producer and member of the Daughters, has led the charge in producing a short film that will highlight some of the current recipients and the impact of our mission on their military families. Thus far, Nancy has interviewed two recent graduates from Harvard, a current student at Princeton, and one former recipient who is a major in the army. In the coming weeks we will capture comments from our students at Notre Dame and Stanford. The film will be edited and circulated in the late spring. In addition to producing the film, we have sent three e-newsletters focusing on current and former recipients. A fund-raising appeal letter was sent to the membership and interested friends that emphasizes the importance of our 100-year old scholarship program. The implementation of this campaign and its success could not have been possible without the dedication of the steering committee composed of Martha Glass, Caroline Weintz, Louise Ducas, and Betsy Scott and our executive director, Rolly Woodyatt. In addition, the advisory board has met on a regular basis throughout the year and offered invaluable advice for the Military Stars Campaign. The advisory board members are: Bill Constantine, our financial advisor; David Brewer, an attorney and husband of our secretary, Kathy Brewer; Joanne Patton, one of our distinguished members; and Katharine McMaster, a former scholarship recipient and frequent speaker at our luncheons. Finally, I would like to thank Nancy Talcott for her tenacity and skill in producing the film. I extend my sincerest thanks and gratitude to all of those I have mentioned. In conclusion, many thanks to all of you who recognize the importance of our mission and have contributed so generously to this campaign. If you have not given, I encourage you to join me in donating to this worthy cause, so that we can continue our commitment to help military families who have made tremendous sacrifices for our country.

REPORT OF THE PRESIDENT February 4, 2015

The first event of 2014 was the annual meeting. Alas, our speaker cancelled because of illness. We had much business and many interesting reports; several Daughters mentioned to me that they appreciated being able to speak to their friends over lunch instead of listening to a speaker —however fascinating. At the March board of directors meeting, a new word was introduced into our vocabulary: QUASQUICENTENNIAL. Many of us remember celebrating the Daughters’ Centennial, and now we are approaching our 125th anniversary. In 2019, the quasquicentennial of our founding will be celebrated. Board members were asked to bring their suggestions for observing this milestone to every meeting and we have built up quite a file. In late March the Daughters were on the road. About forty Daughters, husbands, and guests traveled to Houston where we met fifteen Texan members for the first time. Our hosts introduced us to their Houston, took us around the museums where they volunteer and then wined and dined us at their spectacular clubs. Special thanks are owed to JoLee Haddock who, together with Bette Carpenter and Clare Leppert and the Texas committee, overlooked no detail in organizing our four days. We hope that the Houston ladies will come to New York and travel with us on future spring trips! And San Francisco here we come! California Daughter Ginny Hall has worked for many months in 2014 so we will have a spectacular San Francisco experience in May 2015. Bayanne Hauhart, Meredith Brewer, and Margaret Lewis are also busily planning. Thank you all. These spring trips are the best opportunity on our calendar to get to know Daughters from around the country. I will be so glad to finally put faces to Californian Daughters whom I have known only on the phone. The spring scholarship celebration and luncheon was held on April 4. The morning began with a tour of the newly restored and very elegant Park Avenue Armory—an inspired idea from Gail Lloyd who arranged it all. Then on to Knickerbocker Club where Jane Gonzalez sponsored a delicious lunch. Scholarship Chairman Debbie Mumm introduced us to three scholarship students and one alumna. They spoke about their university experiences and made us very proud to have been able to help such outstanding daughters of armed services officers. For the fourth year in a row, I feel compelled to proclaim this the best scholarship luncheon ever! The scholarship committee continued its work in May when the 2014 recipients were chosen. The banqueting table was replaced by our very long conference table. Dozens and dozens of applications were read and evaluated by our hardworking and careful scholarship committee led by Deborah Mumm. There is one more important piece in the scholarship process: funding. Thank you all for continuing to contribute to the Military Stars campaign. Jane Gonzalez and her committee of advisors have a multi-year strategy that has successfully combined the traditional and new. Their tools range from handwritten notes to e-blasts and soon a video. Thank you board member Nancy Talcott for traveling from New York to Massachusetts to Indiana to California to produce this three-minute video. We must also thank Bill Constantine, our financial advisor at 19/19. Military Stars is breaking new ground for this organization. In May, Millicent Cox and I carried the Daughters' flag in the Flag Day Parade and thoroughly enjoyed the other heritage organizations and the legions of school children. The Daughters' flag also made an appearance in November when it was carried in the Patriotic Church Service by Gail Lloyd and Elizabeth Lindh. In October, for our fall trip we had tours of two fabulous Cass Gilbert buildings: the Woolworth Building and the U.S. Custom House, punctuated by lunch at Fraunces Tavern. This was a very appropriate trip as Mrs. Cass Gilbert served as President of the Daughters of the Cincinnati from 1927 to 1931. The last activity of 2014 was the festive Christmas Party held once again in the library of the Cosmopolitan Club. We have Cosmopolitan member Rolly Woodyatt to thank for arranging a very jolly party. Projects that spanned the months included upgrading the computer system with two new computers and catching up with the backlog of the membership certificates. From this very long list of activities you will know that the board of the Daughters of the Cincinnati has worked hard. Everything about this organization has been improved by the personal touch and labor of Vice President Jane Gonzalez. Scholarship Chairman Deborah Mumm makes sure that the Daughters' mission of helping the daughters of career armed services officers is carried out properly. Secretary Kathy Brewer and Treasurer Caroline Brown have looked after the organization’s business with élan. Margaret Harbison's historian's report is the highlight of every meeting. Registrar Mary Meade has worked incredibly hard to keep membership applications on track, and as busy as she is, I count on you all to make her even busier by proposing new members. Our managers have been equally busy. Martha Glass with Military Stars, Nancy Talcott producing our film, and Gail Lloyd researching and planning and connecting on our behalf. Major ideas and support have poured forth from Jan Ogden, Gloria Harper, Elizabeth Lindh, Barbara Meszaros, and Millicent Cox. All of us have been supported and organized by executive director extraordinaire Rolly Woodyatt. Thank you all. My last thank you is to Nominating Chairman Lucy Brennan who has put together a slate of officers with brains, drive, and commitment. With the guidance of president elect Kathy Brewer and her officers and with the help of you all, the Daughters of the Cincinnati will grow.
