Kentucky Broadcasters Association THE VOICE OF KENTUCKY BROADCASTERS 2013 annual report contents message from Chairman Bill Lamb Chairman’s Message ...... .2 President/CEO’s Message . .3 As I conclude my year as Chairman of the Kentucky Broadcasters Association, KBA Services and Benefits I do so with a mixture of satisfaction, sadness, and anticipation. The satisfaction comes from all our organization has accomplished this year, ABIP................... .4 and I don’t mean to imply that I had much to do with that. The credit must go to Gary White, our outstanding President, with marvelous support from our board Lobbying ............... .4 and our member stations. This has been a record setting year on many levels. The KBA fiscal year ended Nov. 30, with a record income of almost 1.4 million Scoholarships ........... .5 dollars, netting a tidy profit of just over $400,000. This financial stability has allowed us an unprecedented growth of our services and benefits to our member KBART / PAC........... .6 stations. TDGA ................. .6 The sadness comes as a result of the sudden passing of Kevin Riecke, our Director of Sales for KART. He was a good, sincere man with a challenging KART .................. .6 job which he approached with optimism every day. He left us much too soon. I am proud to say the KBA board did some things to help Kevin’s wife and kids Legal Hotline ............ .7 through the end of the year that were both needed and appreciated by his family. My anticipation comes from what we have done to prepare for a prosperous KBA Seminars future. We have started to realize that we, as broadcasters, have significant and Training ............ .8 collective influence and we are learning how to harness that power for the good of our listeners, our viewers and our own businesses. In the big scheme of KBA Annual Conference things, our individual stations or groups may be small, but there is nothing small & Award Winners ....... .9 about us when we band together. Broadcasters are all ultra-competitive people and sometimes we may have to learn to sublimate our competiveness for the KBA Member Benefits .10-11 opportunity to join something bigger, stronger, and more productive than what PEP ................... 15 we could accomplish individually. This realization gives me great hope for the future. Our relationships with our legislators have never been stronger. Thanks to Financial Report......... 16 Gary’s gentle prodding, we continue to stay in front of our lawmakers on a regular basis to not only have contact with them, but contact with impact. KBA Past Chairmen ..... 19 More anticipation: We hired James Reed to run KART. I anticipate that he will take what Kevin started and continue to build upon it. James is a very talented individual and I’m glad he has joined KART. Finally, I anticipate that we will continue to grow and prosper under the continued leadership of Gary White, the great organization skills of Patti Pullen and the new Chairmanship of Rick McCue next year. Thank you for allowing me to be your Chairman for 2013. It has been an honor and a privilege. 2 KENTUCKY BROADCASTERS ASSOCIATION message from board of President/CEO Gary R. White directors Bill Lamb Chairman WDRB-TV WMYO-TV, Louisville Rick McCue, Chairman-Elect WBKO-TV, Bowling Green Kelly Wallingford, Past-Chairman It is a challenge for me to write about what has happened in the past. Now don’t Wallingford Broadcasting, Richmond take me wrong, it has been a great year for the KBA and we have a lot to reflect on Radio Directors and be proud of but, I get more excited thinking and talking about what may, can and Chris Freeland will happen in the future. Throughout this Annual Report you can read about what WCBL AM/FM, Benton Bob Kelley has happened in the “past” year. On pages 10 and 11 is a list of benefits, services and WFMW WKTG, Madisonville programs currently offered by the KBA. In 2013 the list grew with the addition of Tom Ulmer items like the Continuing Education Reimbursement Program, the Poynter Institute Main Line, Broadcasting, Louisville News Reporting Seminar and the National Radio Talent Institute. All of the KBA’s Derron Steenbergen offerings are designed to save broadcast stations money or help them make more Commonwealth Broadcasting, Glasgow money through better management, programming and sales training. And they are Bill Gentry Clear Channel, Lexington all provided at no cost to member stations. The Mission of the KBA is to represent Bridgett Gambrel and further the interest of broadcasters. There is no doubt we met that challenge Forcht Broadcasting, London/Anneville in 2013, as the Mission Statement says, “through meetings and publications, and Chris Winkle providing educational services through conventions and workshops”. WCYN-AM, Cynthiana The statement also says the KBA is to further the interest of broadcasters through Adam Gearheart “other appropriate means” in order to better to serve the public. It’s that word Gearheart, Harold Paul Hitchcock “other” that gets me excited because now we can think and talk about what may, WMKY-FM, Morehead can and will happen in the future. 2014 is under way, please don’t hesitate to contact Television Directors me or your KBA board representative with suggestions and ideas to help us better Marti Hazel serve you this year. The cost was previously $300 and up! While we have seen an increase in new stations signing up, there are still many that are not taking advantage of this valuable opportunity. When a station signs up for ABIP they will be contacted by an FCC trained KBA inspector to arrange a mutually satisfactory inspection date. Inspection results are confidential between the inspector and station management. The FCC is not notified of any violations, only that a station has passed. The ABIP does not impose fines or NAL’s. Occasionally, I hear ABIP referred to as a “Mock Inspection”. That is a misnomer. ABIP is performed under contract with, fully sanctioned and recognized by, the Federal Communications Commission. Any station passing the ABIP receives a certificate exempting it from random FCC inspection for a period of three years. Testimonials are available from pleased broadcasters across the state!
