COPYRIGHT, 1940 BY THE BLUE BOOKS COMPANY 5 Central Library of Rochester and Monroe County · Miscellaneous Directories PREFACE HE Seventeenth edition of THE BLUB BOOK is presented with the hope that it will merit the generous reception accorded its predecessors. We desire especially to thank our patrons for their consistent and substantial sup port of our efforts. We have striven to make this edition more complete and valuable than the past. The difficulties, particu larly in these days, attending the compiling of this book should be appreciated; and while the Publishers will in no way be responsible for any errors that may occur, we trust any inaccuracies or omissions wijl be brought to our notice, so they may be corrected in the next edition. THE BLUE BOOK is neither a city directory nor abso lutely an elite directory; neither do we pretend to pass upon the social or financial standing of the persons whose -names are contained therein. In an area as extensive as this book embraces it is impossible for everybody to know everyone else. But it is'possible for people to know many other people of a similar mode of life, such as characterizes the numerous clubs and organizations, both city and suburban, of your locality. For members of these and their friends THE BLUE BOOK is meant to serve as a directory, setting forth such personal information as may be useful and needful, but not available elsewhere. The title "BLUE BOOK" does not refer to blue blood, as many people suppose. Webster's defines Blue Book as follows: "Blue Book—a book containing a list of fashionable addresses." It has been published regularly for over thirty years and should not be confused with any imitative or transitory publication. Kindly forward any information that will aid in keeping yours or other listings correct to The Blue Books Company, 224th Street, Springfield Gardens, N. Y.
