  • Dragons and Dragon Lore
DRAGONS AND DRAGON LORE BY ERNEST INGERSOLL With an Introduction by HENRY FAIRFIELD OSBORN President of the American Museum of Natural History "There’s no such thing in nature, and you’ll draw A faultless monster which the world ne’er saw." 1928 Payson & Clarke Ltd. New York Introduction I became intensely interested in Dragon Worship and the Dragon Myth during my recent journey in China and Mongolia in support of the Central Asiatic Expeditions of Roy Chapman Andrews. Especially, in the royal city of Peking appears the apotheosis of the Dragon in every conceivable form of symbolism and architecture. The Dragons leading up to the steps of the temples and palaces of the Manchu emperors, and the superb dragon-screen guarding the approach to one of the royal palaces, are but two of the innumerable examples of the universal former belief in these mythical animals, and of the still prevailing beliefs among the common people of China. For example, one night in a far distant telegraph station in the heart of the desert of Gobi, I overheard two men pointing out Leader Andrews and myself as 'men of the Dragon bones.' On inquiry, I learned that our great Central Asiatic Expedition was universally regarded by the natives as engaged in the quest of remains of extinct Dragons, and that this superstition is connected with the still universal belief among the natives that fossil bones, and especially fossil teeth have a high medicinal value. Not long after my return from Central Asia, I suggested to my friend, Ernest Ingersoll, that he write the present volume, preparing a fresh study of the history of the Dragon Myth which, now largely confined to China, once spread all over Asia and Europe, as dominant not only in mythology but entering even into the early teachings of Christianity, as so many other pagan myths have done.

  • The Birth of the Dragon—Bruce Lee As a Cultural Icon and a Cross- Cultural Translator/ Adaptor
Abstract The Birth of the Dragon—Bruce Lee as a cultural icon and a cross- cultural translator/ adaptor Bruce Lee has been considered a cultural icon with the enduring charm for people all over the world. It is true that he did make things different with tremendous impact on film fight choreography, popular culture, the new representation of an Asian man, movie industry, development of martial arts, or say, all aspects of our life, and I believe shall continue his influence for the generations to come. However, Lee’s personal representation as a mystical and philosophical oriental wise man that was frequently seen on screen, TV, media, personal manuscripts and articles on magazines seems to complicate his image as not being merely an undefeatable martial artist or a super hero on the screen but also a preacher of oriental philosophy. His rebellious attitude toward the traditional martial arts institution at the time and the invention of a new fighting style—Jeet Kune do, or the intercepting fist, based on his philosophy of “formless form” or “a style without a style” has made his role more complicated and hard to decipher. Should we call him a founder of a new martial art style? Was he a person detached of his times or ahead of his times? What did he really invent? According to Bolelli (2003), although “Lee’s philosophy may have been his greatest contribution,” it is nevertheless the case that “Lee did not come up with any original ideas. The entire philosophy so passionately espoused by Lee derives from the writings of other people” (157).

  • Or Why Are We Still Talking About Yellowface in Twenty-First-Century Cinema?
Cosmopolitan Pleasures and Affects; Or Why Are We Still Talking about Yellowface in Twenty-First-Century Cinema? Felicia Chan Abstract: It is now widely acknowledged that the postracial fantasies ushered in by Barack Obama’s two-term election success are now in tatters. Yet debates on yellowface casting practices in contemporary Hollywood (also said to have evolved into “whitewashing” practices), in such films as The Last Airbender (M. Night Shyamalan, 2010), Aloha (Cameron Crowe, 2015), Doctor Strange (Scott Derrickson, 2016), Birth of the Dragon (George Nolfi, 2016), and Ghost in the Shell (Rupert Sanders, 2017), have resurfaced in recent times.
