In connection with the Ordinance issued by the Minister of Social Welfare on 19 June 1937, designating certain narcotic substances and products as having a deleterious effect on health (Official Journal of the Polish Republic, No. 49, Section 379) and the Ordinance issued by the Minister of Health on 22 January 1948, relating to amendments to the former (Official Journal of the Polish Republic, No. 9, Section 62) the Minister of the Treasury lists hereunder a schedule of alkaloids and their derivativestogether with narcotic substances and products, the customs clearance of which, under Par. 24, Section XXX, p. 5 of the Regulations governing Customs Procedure, may take place on the basis of licences (certificates) issued by the Minister of Health and the Minister of the Treasury in the form prescribed by the Ordinance of 20 January 1925, on Procedure for the Import or Export of Narcotic Drugs and Substances (Official Journal of the Polish Re• public, No. 15, Section 98). 1. CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL DATA The immediate precursor of heroin is morphine, and morphine is obtained from opium. Opium is the dried milky juice (latex) obtained from the unripe seed pods of Papaver somniferum L., more commonly referred to as the opium poppy or oil poppy. Morphine has also been reported to be present in Papaver setigerum, and as a minor alkaloid in Papaver decaisnei and Papaver rhoeas. However, there is no known instance of these poppies being used for opium production, and work that is more recent has cast considerable doubt as to the presence of morphine in Papaver rhoeas. A major review by Kapoor on the botany and chemistry of the opium poppy is recommended additional reading. Opium latex is obtained from the seed capsule of the poppy while the capsule is still in the green stage, usually seven or more days after flowering and petal fall. Physically, the opium latex is contained within laticiferous vessels, which lie just beneath the epicarp of the seed capsule. The latex is harvested by making a series of shallow incisions through the epicarp, which allows the latex to "bleed" onto the surface of the seed capsule. Most commonly, the latex is allowed to partially dry on the capsule surface, and is then removed by scraping the capsule with specially designed hand tools.

Objective: Amputation; Report anesthesia approach for a patient with squamous cell carcinoma submitted to urgent hemicorporectomy after an episode of hypovolemic shock. Hemorrhagic shock Case report: After lesion bleeding, the patient presented hypovolemic shock class 3, and was submitted to urgent procedure under general inhalation anesthesia and intravenous multimodal analgesia, presenting hemodynamic instability requiring massive blood transfusion after spinal cord transection and removal of surgical specimen. Dr.-Ing.4 This report-thefirst ofa series on codeine and its alternates for pain and cough relief- presents a detailed evaluation of experimental and clinical data concerning the analgesic action of codeine (the antitussive action will be assessed separately). The authors discuss the pharmacology of the drug, including side-effects and toxicity; effects on the respiratory, circulatory, digestive and urinary systems; tolerance, dependence and liability to abuse; metabolic effects; and mechanism ofaction. Though codeine is generally more toxic than morphine to animals on account of its convulsant action, it is less toxic to man, possibly because it produces less respiratory depression. Again, tolerance to its analgesic effects has been demonstrated in several animal species, but dependence in man is observedfar less frequently than it is with morphine, and the abstinence syndrome is less intense. From their extensive review of the evidence available, the authors conclude that codeine is a good analgesic and that little risk to public health is likely to arise from its clinical use to relieve pain.
