Nimba's Profile
Nimba’s Profile The Flag of Nimba County: - (Valor, Purity and Fidelity reflected in the stripes) Nimba was part of the central province of Liberia which included Bong and Lofa. It became a full-fledged county in 1964 when President William V.S. Tubman changed the provinces into counties. Nimba became one of the original nine counties of Liberia. Over the years, other sub-divisions have been added making the total of 15 counties. Nimba is located in the North-East Region of the country. The size of Nimba is 4,650 square miles. In his book, Liberia Facing Mount Nimba, Dr. Nya Kwiawon Taryor, Sr. revealed that the name of the county "Nimba", originated from "Nenbaa ton" which means slippery mountain where beautiful young girls slip and fall. Mount Nimba is the highest mountain in Liberia. Nimba is the second largest county in Liberia in terms of population. Before the civil war in 1989, there were over 313,050 people in the county according to the 1984 census. Now Nimba Population has increased to 462,026. Nimba is also one of the richest in Liberia. It has the largest deposit of high grade iron ore. Other natural resources found in Nimba are gold, diamonds, timber, etc. In the late 50's, Nimba's huge iron ore reserve was exploited by LAMCO-the Liberian-American Swedish Mining Company. A considerable portion of Liberia's Gross Domestic Product, GDP, was said to have been generated from revenues from Nimba's iron ore for several years. Of particular interest is the effect of the community in which a woman lives on her current and past fertility, her marital status and her use of contraception. This interest stems from the fact that, although the community in which a woman lives is integral to anthropological explanations of fertility, statistical models of fertility have rarely included an assessment of community effects. -

World Food Programme (WFP), as one of the main channels for humanitarian assistance, responded to these calls by organizing several consultations with experts, partner agencies and donors to identify the areas for improvement and develop a strategy for strengthening its capacities in emergency needs assessments. WFP's Executive Board endorsed this strategy which involves the preparation of a Emergency Food Security Assessment (EFSA) handbook, research work on assessment methodologies, investment in improved food security information in selected disaster-prone countries and a stand-by capacity for "independent assessments". Establishing a capacity for "independent assessments" seeks to address existing shortcomings in three areas: (a) meeting assessment needs in countries without a WFP Country Office; (b) augmentation of assessment capacities in countries with limited WFP Country Office capacities; and (c) provision of an external perspective in countries where earlier assessments have been contested. The report presented here falls into the second category. -

GOVERNMENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA 2008 NATIONAL POPULATION AND HOUSING CENSUS: PRELIMINARY RESULTS LIBERIA INSTITUTE OF STATISTICS AND GEO-INFORMATION SERVICES (LISGIS) MONROVIA, LIBERIA JUNE 2008 FOREWORD Post-war socio-economic planning and development of our nation is a pressing concern to my Government and its development partners. Such an onerous undertaking cannot be actualised with scanty, outdated and deficient databases. Realising this limitation, and in accordance with Article 39 of the 1986 Constitution of the Republic of Liberia, I approved, on May 31, 2007, “An Act Authorizing the Executive Branch of Government to Conduct the National Census of the Republic of Liberia”. The country currently finds itself at the crossroads of a major rehabilitation and reconstruction. Virtually every aspect of life has become an emergency and in resource allocation, crucial decisions have to be taken in a carefully planned and sequenced manner. The publication of the Preliminary Results of the 2008 National Population and Housing Census and its associated National Sampling Frame (NSF) are a key milestone in our quest towards rebuilding this country. Development planning, using the Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRS), decentralisation and other government initiatives, will now proceed into charted waters and Government’s scarce resources can be better targeted and utilized to produce expected dividends in priority sectors based on informed judgment. We note that the statistics are not final and that the Final Report of the 2008 Population and Housing Census will require quite sometime to be compiled. In the interim, I recommend that these provisional statistics be used in all development planning for and in the Republic of Liberia. -

Humanitarian situation in Monrovia: Water and sanitation in general Water and sanitation problems are massive in Liberia, only 32% of Liberia’s population has access to clean drinking water and less than 30% of the people have access to latrines. A large amount of the population depends on wells and many of these wells are not protected. The city of Monrovia has had no regular garbage collection since 1996. Refuse collection has been carried out on an occasional basis by NGOs and the municipality of Monrovia. In March this year, garbage collection collapsed completely. UNICEF and its partners under the Water and Sanitation Committee are taking the lead in solving the garbage problem. New population movements underway Over 90 camps in Monrovia provide shelter to at least 250,000 displaced people. According to latest information, a new population wave is on the move towards Monrovia. Over 50,000 people are fleeing from fighting in Totota in Bomi County toward Salala and a few have been reported to trickle into Monrovia to escape the rebels. UN agencies and NGOs are working on contingency plans to avoid the arrival of more internally displaced people in the already overcrowded camps in the capital. Humanitarian aid agencies hope to halt the population movement to Salala, Bomi County. Situation in the camps in Monrovia About 45,000 displaced people live in the SKD Stadium which is the biggest camp in Monrovia. Daily heavy rainfall makes living conditions in the camp even more difficult. -

On 25 February, the border between Guinea and Liberia (Diecke side) reopened to the public after months of closure. The response team posted at the border (Guinea side) reported a lack of essential equipment, including an isolation room and a sufficient stock of hand sanitizers, among others. Response Efforts and Health 2. In total, 23,694 confirmed, probable, and suspected cases of EVD have been reported in the three most affected countries. There have been reported 9,589 deaths. 3. WHO reported a total of 99 new confirmed cases of EVD in the week to 22 February, a decline from 128 cases reported in the week to 15 February. Guinea reported 35 new confirmed cases. Cases continue to arise from unknown chains of transmission. Sierra Leone reported 63 new confirmed cases and transmission remains widespread, including a spike of 20 new confirmed cases in Bombali linked to a cluster of cases in the Aberdeen fishing community in Freetown. There were 14 new confirmed cases in Freetown over the same period, with cases still arising from unknown chains of transmission. Liberia reported 1 new confirmed case, which originated from a registered contact associated with a known chain of transmission in Monrovia. 4. In addition to cases arising from unknown chains of transmission, a total of 16 new confirmed cases were identified in Guinea and Sierra Leone after post-mortem testing of individuals who died in the community, indicating that a significant number of individuals are still either unable or reluctant to seek treatment.
