  • Passenger Lists in Newspapers, on Microfilm, and Some Other Sources Held at Christchurch City Libraries
January 2013 A guide to some of the 19th century passenger lists in newspapers, on microfilm, and some other sources held at Christchurch City Libraries Port Lyttelton, showing the first four ships and emigrants landing from the Cressy, December 28th 1850. Page 1 of 63 January 2013 The First Four Ships arrived December 1850. The ships arriving between December 1850-1853 were Canterbury Association vessels. The ships arriving between 1853-1855 came independently and not under the auspices of a government or quasi-government body. The Lyttelton Times was published from January 1851; The Press was published from 1861. At first both were published twice weekly meaning passenger lists appear in a shipping column a few days after a vessel arrives. 1850-1855 paying passengers are usually listed. Assisted passengers are not listed by name, appearing only as “and 27 in the steerage”. From 1855-1870 the Canterbury Provincial Government was in charge of immigration to Canterbury and had an emigration agent stationed in London. To help find employment for migrants, the government supplied lists of assisted migrants to the newspapers. The names of male heads of families, their home county in Britain (or their country in Europe), if they had a spouse and the number of children they brought, are published. The first names of a wife and children are not given. Children of immigrants who were older than about 12 were considered adults and are listed among the single men and women along with other single people. Sometimes the assisted people are grouped according to their occupations so that prospective employers might quickly select prospective employees.

Picton Smart & Connected Postal Address: c/o PO Box 610, Picton Email: [email protected] Long Term Plan Submission 2018-2028 From: Picton Smart & Connected To: The Marlborough District Council 25/04/2020 – Annual Plan Supplement Re: Marlborough Sounds Heritage & Environment Centre, Picton This submission is being forwarded by the Picton Smart & Connected, Heritage Working Group. Following discussions between the Picton Smart & Connected Arts & Heritage Working group, the Picton community and representatives of the Marlborough Heritage Trust, we (PS&C) would like to offer our support for the development and building of a Marlborough Sounds Heritage & Environment Centre in Picton. Understanding a community’s historic, cultural, environmental, and social context is essential for celebrating and developing a ‘sense of place’ for both locals and visitors and economically, heritage tourism is now internationally recognised, as a significant attractor for sustainable tourism growth. We believe that a Marlborough Sounds Heritage and Environment Centre, would offer an invaluable resource in both regards. We understand that the Marlborough Heritage Trust which governs the Edwin Fox Museum and Ship are fully supportive of such a development on and around the existing Edwin Fox Museum site. It is the opinion of the Picton Smart and Connected Heritage Work Group, that the building should be located on the waterfront with the existing Edwin Fox Ship at its centre. We would propose a two storied building to reduce its footprint, traditionally built using wood, steel and natural materials and we support the building of a structure that mirrors the design principles and maritime feel, of the new Picton library.

She is best known for her detailed inte- rior scenes, communicated with rich colors and exquisite lighting. Harriet Backer was one of four daugh- ters born to Nils and Sophie Backer. They resided in Holmestrand, Vestfold, Norway. Her father Nils was a ship merchant, and her mother had come from a wealthy family. Their status in life enabled the girls to have a cultured upbringing, an education with fo- cus in music and the arts. Each of the sisters was gifted. Harriet’s younger sister Agathe (Backer Grøndahl), became a well known concert pianist, and is considered Norway’s greatest female composer. The eldest sister Inga was educated as a singer in Berlin, but she only shared her talent with the family, and not professionally. Her youngest sister Margrethe was a painter. She also was the Senior Matron at the Royal Palace, and in addition to her work, she had eight children, which allowed little time to pursue an artistic career.
