Lampert is chairman and chief executive of- ficer of Sears Holding Corp. and chairman of ESL Investments, which holds a 48.4 percent stake in MONDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2013 Q $3.00 Q WOMEN’S WEAR DAILY Sears. Last week he faced a blow when Goldman WWD Sachs pulled $3.5 billion out of ESL, cutting the funds ESL has under management by more than 60 percent and, as a result, reducing his stake in Sears to below 50 percent since part of the payout was in Sears stock. On Friday, Lampert had to once again shuffle Sears’ assets in order to bolster the ailing retailer’s balance sheet. The hedge fund manager is spinning off Lands’ End, making that division a public company once again. [For more on the spin-off, see sidebar, page 7]. No word yet on the future of Sears Auto Center busi- ness, which the company has been considering divest- ing to raise further funds to keep Sears operating. Even after the latest spin-off, Lampert will still have 48.4 percent of Lands’ End and there is little doubt he and his investors have profited handsomely Gaucho from the Sears investment. -

The Shortcomings of Passive Intelligence It can be said without doubt that today counter-terrorism has risen to become the greatest of priorities in terms of national security. Evidence of this is former Director of Central Intelligence (DCI) Porter J. Goss’s recent testimony to the US Senate Armed Services Committee that the global war on terrorism has become today’s dominant intelligence priority, with fundamental changes being made to the United States Intelligence Community to provide counter-terrorism and war-fighter support. These include the redirection of people and collection systems, as well as rapidly expanding programs, budgets, and capabilities. 2 An important element of this counter-terrorism war will inevitably be covert action (CA). Counter-terrorism though is neither a chess game against a single enemy, nor an attempt at completing a jigsaw puzzle, unless one accepts that the picture is fragmentary and dispersed, with many pieces that fit nowhere. -

Bradley Cooper Need we even explain why this hunky actor was named People magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” in 2011? Blue-eyed hottie Bradley Cooper was born on January 5, 1975, and, boy, are we thankful! The actor and producer has starred in numerous movies, including Wedding Crashers, Yes Man, He’s Just Not That Into You, and the infamous Hangover trilogy, to name a few. Following his celebrity divorce from wife Jennifer Esposito in 2006, Bradley Cooper has had only a few relationships in the public eye. He was linked to Renee Zellweger for two years and dated his The Words co-star Zoe Saldana after that. Strategic Thinking in a Complex World Web: https://www.nimmonsconsulting.com Securing Israel – The Mossad Eur Ing Steve Nimmons FBCS CITP FIET CEng FRSA Nimmons Consulting, London, January 2018 Mossad is one of the world’s most famous, some may say feared intelligence agencies. As part of Israel’s intelligence community, it works alongside sister organisations such as Aman (military intelligence) and Shin Bet (Israel’s domestic security service). In the aftermath of the holocaust and World War II, the formation of the modern state of Israel in 1948 was met with immediate Arab resistance. In the War of Independence, the armies of Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Iraq attacked the fledgling state. Israel, facing existential threat from inception had need of extensive military, security and intelligence capabilities. Protection of the homeland from volatile and hostile neighbours, hunting Nazi war criminals, protecting and gathering in the diaspora were immediate challenges. Mossad therefore had to establish itself quickly, form strategic alliances with other intelligence agencies and work to protect Israeli interests on the global stage. In so doing, it established a reputation for ingenuity, fearless commitment and ruthless execution of executive Page 1 of 19 Securing Israel – The Mossad Nimmons Consulting, London, January 2018 Eur Ing Steve Nimmons FBCS CITP FIET CEng FRSA Strategic Thinking in a Complex World Web: https://www.nimmonsconsulting.com actions.
