Ik heb steeds het geluk gehad op mensen te stuiten die me met zeer veel enthousiasme verder geholpen hebben. • In het bijzonder zou ik Dhr. Melkan Kucam willen bedanken. Hij heeft zich echt enorm voor me ingezet en er voor gezorgd dat ik steeds op de hoogte was van wat er precies binnen de Assyrische gemeenschap gaande was. • Last but not least mijn mama, die als zelfbenoemde “leek” toch zeer kritische feedback gaf. Abstract __________________________________________________________________________________________ In dit onderzoek wordt gepeild in hoeverre transnationale mobilisatie in de Assyrische gemeenschap in Mechelen aanwezig is. Deze gemeenschap is afkomstig uit zuid-oost Turkije meer bepaald uit Hassana en Herbul Aangezien er slechts transnationale mobilisatie kan zijn wanneer er een gezamenlijke identiteit bestaat binnen een gemeenschap wordt er ook verder ingegaan op wat identiteit precies is. Het gaat om een kwalitatief onderzoek waarbij aan de hand van interviews en participatieve observatie een beeld van de Assyrische identiteit gevormd wordt. De gezamenlijke identiteit die bij de Assyrische Mechelaars is aangetroffen, is gebaseerd op een sterke imaginair. Ze voelen zich met elkaar verbonden, ondanks het feit dat deze groep niet langer een thuisland heeft. Ze delen een religie, een taal en een geschiedenis. Deze pijlers hebben een belangrijke symbolische waarde die het saamhorigheidsgevoel binnen de gemeenschap versterken. Toch kunnen wij conflictpunten onderscheiden, deze betreffen voornamelijk de verschillende geloofstromingen. Er wordt niet naar een eigen land gestreefd, men tracht zijn Assyrische identiteit via andere kanalen te behouden. Het gaat om subtiele vormen van transnationale mobilisatie, politieke grensoverschrijdende netwerken zijn in Mechelen niet teruggevonden. Een artikel in het tijdschrift MO* in 2008 leerde mij het bestaan van deze minderheidsgroep kennen. Het boek van Dhr. August Thiry “Mechelen aan de Tigris” bracht verdere verduidelijking. Het vertelt het verhaal van de Assyriërs afkomstig uit het dorp Hassana in het zuidoosten van Turkije, die na gedwongen migratie zich in Mechelen gevestigd hebben. In het vak “Politiek van de globalisering” kwam juist transnationale politieke mobilisatie aan bod. Ik vroeg me af hoe het zat met die transnationale politieke mobilisatie bij de Assyrische christenen in Mechelen. Mijn onderzoek kreeg langzaam vorm. Buiten het ene boek van Dhr. Thiry werd al snel duidelijk dat er nog niet veel over dit onderwerp geschreven was. Kwalitatief veldonderzoek leek de aangewezen manier om een goede kennis van de gekozen gemeenschap te ontwikkelen. Aan de hand van interviews en participatieve observatie heb ik geprobeerd me een beeld te vormen van hoe deze zeer hechte gemeenschap zijn Assyrische identiteit in Mechelen tracht te behouden en in hoeverre er sprake is van transnationale politieke mobilisatie. Na een eerste verkenning van het terrein kwam ik echter tot de conclusie dat er praktisch geen transnationale politieke mobilisatie aanwezig is. De politieke focus valt weg. Ik besluit rekening te houden met iedere vorm van transnationale mobilisatie zelfs de meest subtiele uitdrukking ervan. Een andere dwingende aanpassing is dat er zowel met mensen uit Hassana als uit Herbul, een naburig dorp, is gesproken. In eerste instantie was het de bedoeling enkel de Assyrische christenen afkomstig uit Hassana te interviewen, een nieuw “Hassana aan de Dijle” was immers het initiële vertrekpunt. Er bleek al snel dat de interne verschillen tussen deze twee dorpen toch een meerwaarde voor het onderzoek zouden kunnen hebben, vooral omdat dit verschil in Mechelen een zekere rol blijft spelen en zorgt voor bepaalde organisatorische spanningen. Na enig gesleutel is de centrale doelstelling van mijn masterproef na te gaan hoe de Assyrische christenen uit Hassana en Herbul trachten in Mechelen hun Assyrische identiteit staande te houden en in welke mate dit transnationale mobilisatie teweeg brengt. Het gaat eerder om een beschrijvend onderzoek dan een toetsend onderzoek, eerder sociaalantropologisch dan politiek. Het vertrekpunt is de Assyrische gemeenschap in Mechelen. Ik ben op zoek gegaan naar welke dynamieken actief zijn binnen deze gemeenschap en heb deze beschreven. Verschillende thema’s hebben zich onderscheiden. Het zijn die thema’s die in een tweede fase getoetst zijn aan het theoretische kader om een antwoord te kunnen geven op de vraag of er bij de Assyrische Mechelaars effectief sprake is van transnationale

    Journal of Identity and Migration Studies Volume 15, number 1, 2021 RESEARCH ARTICLES Individual Values and Acculturation Processes of Immigrant Groups from Turkey: Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands Ergün ÖZGÜR Abstract. This quantitative research describes the values of three ethnic groups in comparison with each other as well as with the native groups. It also discusses the acculturation processes of Circassians, Kurds and Turks in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. The first research question, “Do immigrant and native groups have similar values?” shows value similarities of Circassians with the French in Belgium, German and Dutch respondents. They have value differences from Flemish respondents. Kurds and Turks have value similarities with German and Flemish respondents, and they have value differences from the Dutch. The second research question, “What acculturation processes do immigrant groups go through?”, confirms high hard assimilation means of Circassians, and high separation means of Turks and Kurds in the Netherlands. In Belgium, Turks have hard high assimilation means, is unexpected, given that Belgium has been a modestly multicultural country. In Turkey, Kurds and Circassians have high assimilation, and Circassians have high integration means. Contrary to the discourses about less participation of immigrants, research findings reveal value similarities of immigrant and native groups in three countries. The European authorities need to develop participative policies to reduce immigrants’ sense of discrimination and natives’ perception of threat for a peaceful society. The Turkish state’s denial of Kurdish identity, and its heavy assimilation and oppression of the Kurdish people have turned some Kurds into political activists, both in Turkey and in the diaspora. In addition, the historical ban and current stigmatization of the Kurdish language have crystallized the importance and centrality of the language, particularly for both Kurdish identity and the Kurdish movement. This thesis explores the forms of political activism in Canada of the Kurds originating in Turkey, and the role of the Kurdish language in their activism. Using a qualitative research design, interviews with activists and participant observations were conducted in the cities of Toronto and Montréal. The findings draw attention to the significance of community centres as umbrella institutions for political activism, and as sites for the enactment of different forms of collective resistance. The study also illustrates that the role of the Kurdish language in activism is more salient at a representational level. That is, the Kurdish language is represented as the main identity marker fuelling activism, implying that speaking Kurdish is an act of resistance and thus political.

It explores the complex linkages between Kurdish and Turkish transnational ethnic media and migrant communities. It is based on 74 in-depth interviews and 6 focus groups with Kurdish and Turkish migrants of diverse age, gender, political affiliation, occupation and length of migration in London, Berlin and Stockholm. Drawing upon the concepts of “imagined community” (Anderson 1991) and “banal nationalism” (Billig 1995), it seeks to understand how migrants make sense of the media representations of the ethno-national conflict between the Turkish state and the Kurds and how they position themselves in relation to these media texts. The thesis explores how the media impact differentially on migrants’ views and ethnic identities in the three countries. This study argues that transnational media speak on behalf of the nation to the nation, even if the members of these imagined national communities live in different places, connecting people across different geographical spaces and thus building transnational imagined communities. They create a sense of belonging to a meaningful imagined community defined as “our” nation.

Well- established Kurdish communities are found all over the world and they form new ethnic minorities in the countries of settlement. Yet, these communities continue to be characterised by the various political developments in Kurdistan, including wars, genocide and forced migration that have occurred in the Kurdish regions in Iran, Iraq, Turkey and Syria.     Chapter SWEDEN AS A GRAVITATION CENTER FOR THE KURDS – DIASPORA FORMATION AND TRANSNATIONAL RELATIONS Khalid Khayati Linkoping University, Linkoping, Sweden ABSTRACT This study investigates the general social and political conditions of diasporan Kurds in Sweden who have created considerable networks and organizations that function for them not only as a substantial means of integration in their residing society, but also as genuine transnational institutions that aim, in one way or another, to affect the politics of their former homelands. The formation and development of the Kurdish diaspora in Sweden depends on two principal factors: the social and political composition of the Kurdish population in Sweden which shows an exceedingly diversified diaspora and the advantageous Swedish political climate which promotes diasporic and transnational activities among the Kurds. Certain scholars regard Sweden as a center of gravity where the development of the Kurdish culture, Kurdish politics and generally speaking the Kurdish identity is considered as a response to those repressive policies that the dominant states have imposed on the Kurds throughout the years. INTRODUCTION At the end of January 2006 the former Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Nordic Representative, Taha Barwari, was the host of the first Kurdish Gala in Stockholm. The Gala, which was attended by numerous Kurdish and Swedish celebrities, gave Mr. Barwari an opportunity to appraise not only a group of leading Kurds who for years had been successful in various areas of Swedish life, but also native Swedes who had in many ways taken an interest in the Kurds and publicly promoted their cause.
