Chamaesyce contains around 600 species and includes the largest New World radiation within the Old World-centered genus Euphorbia. It is one of the few plant lineages to include members with C3, C4 and CAM photosyn- thesis, showing multiple adaptations to warm and dry habitats. The subgenus includes North American-centered groups that were previously treated at various taxonomic ranks under the names of “Agaloma ”, “Poinsettia ”, and “Chamaesyce ”. Here we provide a well-resolved phylogeny of Euphorbia subg. Chamaesyce using nuclear ribosomal ITS and chloroplast ndhF sequences, with substantially increased taxon sampling compared to previous studies. Based on the phylogeny, we discuss the Old World origin of the subgenus, the evolution of cyathial morphology and growth forms, and then provide a formal sectional classification, with descriptions and species lists for each section or subsection we recognize. -

This contribution includes 31 species in 8 genera, all of which are native to the region except Euphorbia prostrata and perhaps Euphorbia spathulata . At least 9 species are represented in fossil record. Euphorbia , with 18 species, is the most diverse genus in the flora of southwest Arizona. Euphorbia spathulata is the only obligate cool-season ephemeral among the spurge family in the flora area and is not known elsewhere in the core area of the Sonoran Desert, and Jatropha cinerea is not known elsewhere in the USA. This publication, encompassing the Euphorbiaceae, is our 13th contribution to the vascular plant flora in southwestern Arizona. -

Box 475, Geraldton, Western Australia 6530 Since I donated the remainder of my former North American insect collection to the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, Cali fornia (Donahue, 1972), it now seems worthwhile to report many of the larval foodplant records associated with the moth life history material. These specimens (both immatures and associated adults) comprise about 40% of the total collection, and are now available for loan to specialists. The majority of species represented are from localities in California and Oregon; a few are from Arizona, central New Mexico and eastern Kansas. Foodplant records for some of these moths have already been published (Buckett, 1964, 1970; Hogue et aI., 1965; McFarland, 1959-1967); only a few of these have been repcated again here, but with corrected or additional data in all cases. Many of the foodplant names appearing here are entirely new records, or at least have never been published for the localities concerned, even though some of them may be known to certain workers. Probably fitting the latter category are some Oregon records which appeared in my Master's thesis (1963), of which 20 copies were privately distributed in 1963-64. These records still remain to be made "official" through publication, however, so are included in the present paper. I was inspired to compile this list after reading a recent plea by R. B. Dominick (1972) and an excellent paper by Shields, et al. (1970). I have essentially followed the format devised by the latter for reporting larval foodplants, as illustrated under the 14 butterfly species included in their paper. -

A Vascular Plant Inventory of the Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area, Maricopa County, Arizona
A VASCULAR PLANT INVENTORY OF THE SPUR CROSS RANCH CONSERVATION AREA, MARICOPA COUNTY, ARIZONA Sarah Hunkins and Kevin Smith Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area 37622 N. Cave Creek Road Cave Creek, AZ 85331 ABSTRACT A vascular plant inventory of the Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area was conducted from August 2007 through May 2012. The study site, encompassing 2,154 acres (871 hectares), lies close to the northern edge of the Sonoran Desert, in central Arizona. The elevation ranges from Cave Creek at 2,179 feet (664 meters) to the summit of Elephant Mountain at 3,926 feet (1,197 meters). Sonoran Desertscrub is the dominant vegetation type. An annotated checklist, based on collected plant specimens, comprised 396 taxa, including 390 species, 4 additional infraspecific taxa and 2 interspecific hybrids in 73 plant families. Asteraceae, Poaceae, Fabaceae, Boraginaceae and Brassicaceae accounted for 44% of the species included in the inventory. Non-native taxa accounted for 15% of the flora. One rare species of concern, one new state record, and seven species endemic to Arizona are reported. This inventory documents the current floristic diversity of a regionally significant Conservation Area and provides baseline data for future studies of shifts in diversity and use in land management. INTRODUCTION The Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area (SCRCA) is situated close to the northern edge of the Sonoran Desert, in central Arizona, on the northeastern margin of the Phoenix metropolitan area. It is part of a complex of 10 regional parks that rings the city of Phoenix, managed by the Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department. -

Plant Species Observed on the Mimms Ranch, Presidio County, Texas 19 September 2019 Draft This incomplete list includes only those species observed during field work conducted by Bill Carr and friends on 26-28 March 2012, 16-19 July 2012, 20-23 August 2012, 20-21 September 2012, 25-29 August 2014, 15-18 April 2015, 16-18 August 2016, 13-14 August 2017 and 16-18 September 2019. Observers included Jonathan Baize, Debbie Benesh, Philip Boyd, Brush Freeman, Hillary Loring, Mary Lou Price, Robert and Lana Potts, Diane Sherrill, and Casey Wade. Many other species are present on the ranch and will be detected with future effort. In this edition, scientific names follow a new single-source reference: Flowering Plants of Trans-Pecos Texas and Adjacent Areas (Powell & Worthington, 2018). This long-awaited effort by three of the most respected botanists in West Texas will doubtless be the “bible” for botanists in the area for years to come, and this edition follows their decisions about taxonomy and nomenclature. Yes, some species names have changed, and some genera have moved to different families, but that’s as is should be. Selected synonyms are provided in brackets. Common names mostly follow the same source, although some from the USDA Plants database (http://plants.usda.gov/java/) are thrown in for good measure. Codes in nativity column: E = exotic, i.e., not native to Texas; N = native to Texas; N+ = endemic to (found only in) Texas. Codes in Form column: FA = annual forb; FAV = annual forb vine; FB = biennial forb; FP = perennial forb; FPV = perennial forb vine; FQ = aquatic plant; GA = annual grass or grasslike plant; GP = perennial grass or grasslike plant; PP = perennial fern or fern ally; S = shrub; T = tree; WV = woody vine. -
