The disease was first observed in commercial mint fields in the Midwestern U.S. in the 1920s and, by the 1950s, was present in mint producing regions of the U.S. Pacific Northwest. Verticillium wilt continues to be a major limiting factor in commercial peppermint (Mentha x piperita) and Scotch spearmint (Mentha x gracilis) production, two of the most important sources of mint oil in the U.S. The perennial aspect of U.S. mint production, coupled with the soilborne, polyetic nature of V. dahliae, makes controlling Verticillium wilt in mint a challenge. Studies investigating the biology and genetics of the fungus, the molecular mechanisms of virulence and resistance, and the role of soil microbiota in modulating host-pathogen interactions are needed to improve our understanding of Verticillium wilt epidemiology and inform novel disease management strategies. This review will discuss the history and importance of Verticillium wilt in commercial U.S. mint production, as well as provide a format to highlight past and recent research advances in an effort to better understand and manage the disease. Study of the Anti-Inflammatory Activity
Pharmacology STUDY OF THE ANTI-IINFLAMMATORY ACTIVITY OF SOME MEDICINAL EDIBLE PLANTS GROWING IN EGYPT N. M. AMMAR* S. Y. AL OKBI** D. A. MOHAMED** SUMMARY: Several edible plants are used in traditional medicine for the treatment of inflammatory condi- tions. The anti-inflammatory activity of some bioactive fractions isolated from the seeds of Trigonella foenum groecum, L., the roots of Glycyrrhiza glabra, L. and the fruits of Coriandrum sativum, L. were determined using the carragenan induced oedema method in comparison with two reference synthetic anti-inflammatory drugs. The petroleum ether and the aqueous methanolic extract of fenugreek and liquorice as well as the whole pow- dered fruit of coriander in a dose of 200 mg/kg exhibited a significant reduction in the volume of inflammation with variable degreeses. The same active dose from the three plants also inhibited prostaglandins E2 levels in a range of 55-64%. Chromatographic fractionation of the bioactive components revealed the isolation of unsatu- rated fatty acids and flavonoids in the three plants, while saponins were only present in fenugreek and liquorice. The anti-inflammatory activity may be attributed to the presence of the forementioned bioactive compounds. Key Words: Anti-inflammatory, medicinal, edible plants. Here, blanket-drags and standardised walks were employed to evaluate tick acquisition by 1 m2 cotton blankets or cotton trousers, respectively, in woodland edge habitats of known high tick abundance. Blankets and trousers had been treated with one of 5% oregano, rosemary, spearmint or thyme oils, 20% DEET (N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide) (positive control) or ethanol excipient-only (negative control). -

The uses of herbal medicines as new alternative treatments are under investigation. This study investigated the effect of Glycyrrhiza glabra L. extract on the full-thickness wound healing in Guinea Pig model. Eight male Guinea Pigs (700-800 g) were used to be creared a square full-thickness wound with 1.5 ×1.5 dimensions on the lumbodorsal area. The wounds were randomly divided into four groups: I; control, II; 1% phenytoin, III; 5% G. glabra and IV; 10 % G.glabra. On day 3, 5, 7, 9 and 12, wound size was measured for assessment of the percent of wound healing. -
