in the field of choral music validates the increase in B choruses around United States and their important 45 benefits to the community. No matter the size of the SEASON community, where arts programs flourish, there is a 1974-2019 measurable economic impact as well as the ability to bring people together from diverse walks of life. We hope that the opportunities for both participants and audiences at Salisbury Singers concerts this season will create an occasion to connect with family and friends as well as others in our community through the beautiful music being performed. Salisbury Singers continues on these many years because of the support from each of you, both financially and through your presence here tonight. Thank you for coming. Please visit our web site at www.salisburysingers.org to learn more about us and our 45th season programs. Naome Fearing, President

From the Artistic Director Tonight, in addition to the professional soloists we have singing the Mass, we are pleased to showcase some of the talent within the Salisbury Singers. The four soloists for the Regina Coeli are drawn from the ranks of the chorus, and we thank them for their willingness to perform in the solo quartet. Next month, our Assistant Conductor, Brad Dumont, will receive the Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting and we congratulate him on this achievement. Salisbury Singers has been the beneficiary of his talent, skill, and passion for choral music these last two years. We look forward to continued association with him and to great performances from him in the future! As we look forward to our final concert of the year on June 8, I’d like to point out that two days before, June 6, is the 75th anniversary of D-Day, a day so instrumental in changing the course of WWII, and a sober reminder of what we owe to our veterans. Our June 8 program, D-Day meets Broadway, will feature music from musicals that emerged at that time that helped a war-weary public escape their troubles: South Pacific, Oklahoma! and Carousel. We will also honor our veterans and servicemen and women with a musical tribute. I hope to see you there! Michelle Graveline, Artistic Director

PROGRAM NOTES

The Regina Coeli KV276 is based on a liturgical chant, one of the Marian antiphons sung at the end of Compline during the church year. This particular text with its alleluias would have been used during the Easter season. Mozart composed three settings of this text. KV276 was his last, composed in 1779 while he was still in the employ of the Archbishop of Salzburg, and probably for use in Salzburg Cathedral. The music for the chorus and solo quartet alternates frequently throughout the piece, and each line of text ends with a full choral Alleluia. We know Mozart was studying the works of Bach and Handel during this period, and if one listens closely, one can hear a direct quote of a famous Handel work. The piece is filled with youthful exuberance and a joyful spirit. Of all Mozart’s choral works, two stand head and shoulders above the rest: his Requiem and the great Mass in C minor. Tragically, both were unfinished. In the case of the Requiem, the completion was interrupted by Mozart’s untimely illness and death. With the C minor Mass, the reasons are less clear, since it was set aside in 1783.

5 PROGRAM NOTES

For a number of years, Mozart was in the employ of the Archbishop of Salzburg. During those years, the length of liturgical music was severely restricted, leading to a number of wonderful but short masses and other liturgical works. After leaving the Archbishop’s employ in 1780, Mozart did not compose many liturgical works. However, it seems that he wrote the C minor Mass either as a wedding present for his new bride, Constanze, or as thanksgiving for her recovery from an illness. We know that it was performed in Salzburg in October 1783, in its unfinished state, and that Constanze sang the beautiful and ornate Et Incarnatus solo. It is possible that the unfinished movements were filled out with plainsong settings of the Mass. It is not known why Mozart set the Mass aside without completing it, but one can imagine that he was turning his attentions to secular works for which he had commissions. We do know that he used music from the Mass for a cantata, David Penitente. Musically, we can see a more mature composition in the C minor Mass than in earlier masses, and evidence that Mozart was becoming more familiar with the works of Bach and Handel. This acquaintance with their works shows itself in the sophisticated contrapuntal writing in the Kyrie, Cum Sancto, and Osanna. The solo numbers easily match the difficulty of his operatic arias, and the Laudamus Te is based on a series of exercises he wrote for Constanze. The Kyrie opens with a solemn orchestral statement and an ascending choral statement, followed by a beautiful imitative choral Kyrie. The soprano soloist takes the Christe section and the chorus returns to finish the fugal Kyrie. The Gloria is divided into 7 sections, beginning with a dazzling choral movement reminiscent of Handel. This is followed by the Laudamus Te, one of Mozart’s most famous arias, requiring extremes of range and great agility on the part of the soloist. The chorus comes in with a short but serious Gratias Agimus Tibi, followed by a duet for the two female soloists, Domine Deus, again requiring virtuoso singing. In the Qui tollis, Mozart divides the choir into two 4-part choruses, each answering the other, with solemn music reflecting the seriousness of the text. The Quoniam is a trio for the two sopranos and tenor, with highly imitative writing. Following the trio, there is a brief adagio for the chorus on the words Jesu Christe, and then Mozart ends the Gloria with a superb fugue in C Major. Mozart composed only two sections to the Credo, the first being a large movement in AABA form for 5-part chorus. This is followed by the Et incarnatus est, an aria for soprano that is highly operatic in character, with a cadenza for soprano and oboe at the end. The rest of the Mass consists of a declamatory Sanctus followed by a magnificent double fugue for 8-part chorus on the Osanna, and a Benedictus for solo quartet with a reprise of the end of the glorious Osanna.

Diana McVey, Soprano Contessa - Le Nozze di Figaro—Florentine Opera “The sweetness and pliancy of McVey’s voice and the sighing quality of her singing made Dove sono do what Mozart meant it to do: Make us love the Countess and give moral weight to an opera that otherwise might be nothing but an amusing sex farce. Usually, singers take the second half of the aria as a fiery, bitter cabaletta; McVey and Rescigno kept it sweet, gentle, nostalgic. She also sang the repeat of the opening verse pianissimo, and the big audience got so very quiet to take it in.” Soprano, Diana McVey, is an artist whose consummate skills as both a singer and an actress have quickly made her highly visible in opera, oratorio and as soloist with symphony orchestras. N U B 45 SEASON

1974-2019 Saturday, June 8, 2019 – 7:30 pm Curtis Performance Hall, Tsotsis Family Academic Center Assumption College, Worcester, MA

Commemorating the 75th anniversary of D-Day two days previously, Salisbury Singers will feature music from musicals that emerged at that time and helped a war-weary public escape their troubles: South Pacific, Oklahoma! and Carousel. We will also honor our veterans and servicemen and women with classic patriotic and service songs. It will be a red, white, and blue celebration! We welcome the Burncoat High School select chorus Quadrivium as they join us for this concert.
