    The San Diego Zoo After 100 Years Sarah Matteson Defying the Odds The nucleus that evolved into the San Diego Zoo lay in the display of animals at the Panama-California Exposition held in 1915- 1916. So popular did the Exposition become, it carried on for a second year, added the word international, and included an array of animals for viewing along “the Isthmus”— the fair’s fun zone. Thirty-two cages placed © along what is today Park Boulevard, opposite the exposition’s Painted Desert attraction, housed the original assortment of animals—kangaroos, bears, buffalos, lions, leopards, hyenas, wolves, baboons, monkeys, parrots, and cockatoos, to name a few.1 Some of these animals were on loan from Wonderland Amusement Park, but other animal collections dotted the park.2 By the time the Exposition closed on December 31, 1916, Wonderland had closed and the animals were in need of a new home and caretaker. The spark that set into motion the San Diego Zoo as a separate entity has become an almost mythical origin story. In short, it is said that the San Diego Zoo “began with a roar”—a local doctor and his brother were driving past the animal cages when they heard a lion roar. The man, Dr. Harry Wegeforth, thought to Sarah Matteson, a graduate of the University of California Los Angeles with BAs in History and Political Science, is the Education Coordinator at the San Diego History Center where she develops programming for varied audiences. She helped develop interactive elements and provided interpretation for the History Center’s exhibit for the San Diego Zoo centennial “The Lore Behind the Roar.” 105 The Journal of San Diego History himself that San Diego ought to keep these animals for a zoo.

    SAN DIEGO’S ETERNAL SUNSHINE Landscape icons abound in the host city of asLa’s 2011 annuaL Meeting and expo. By Daniel Jost, ASLA Watch the Weather on KUSI San Diego and you’ll hear four different forecasts—as I write it’s sunny and 86 degrees in the desert, 74 and fair in the inland valleys, 62 and misty along the coast, and 44 and breezy in the mountains. Within an hour of downtown, you’ll find beaches overtaken by sea lions, scrubby hillsides covered in wildflowers, windblown pines, and colorful desert formations. San Diego has a range of interesting designed land- scapes as well. It has world-famous zoos and golf courses. The University of California, San Diego, has one of the best collections of contextual art anywhere, and nearby is Louis Kahn’s iconic Salk Institute with its runnel that seems to flow to the sea. When people think about Southern California, they often think about sprawl, and San Diego has plenty of that. The easiest way to get around is by car, but many parts of the city are walkable and bikable.     Irving Gill Irving John Gill (April 26, 1870 – October 7, 1936), was an Irving John Gill American architect. He did most of his work in Southern California, especially in San Diego and Los Angeles. He is considered a pioneer of the modern movement in architecture.[1] Twelve of his buildings throughout Southern California are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and many others are designated as historic by local governments. His father was a farmer, and later a Spouse(s) Marion Waugh carpenter. As a child, Gill attended the Madison Street School in Brashears Syracuse.[2] Buildings Granger Hall By 1889, Gill was working as a draftsman under Ellis G. Hall in Dodge House Syracuse. Then, in 1890, he moved to Chicago to work with La Jolla Recreational Joseph Lyman Silsbee, who was Hall's partner years prior. Center Finally, in 1891, Gill went to Adler and Sullivan. His Old Scripps Building apprenticeship there coincided with several import Chicago School architects including Frank Lloyd Wright. While there, he worked on the Transportation Building, an exhibition hall at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair.[3] Long after his death it was claimed that Gill never saw the end of that project due to illness. The veracity of this claim has never been documented and is highly unlikely.

    RECONSTRUCTED ADOBE: THE SPANISH PAST IN THE ARCHITECTURAL RECORDS OF THE SAN DIEGO HISTORICAL SOCIETY, 1907-1929 ■ by Dennis G. Sharp rom skyscrapers downtown to small bungalows in University Heights, Spanish colonial architecture continues to define San Diego’s identity as a city dedicated Fto the preservation of the Spanish past. Early twentieth-century architect Bertram Goodhue described it as the best architecture “to link the spirit of the old seekers of the fabled El Dorado with that of the twentieth century.” Irving Gill thought it “a most expressive medium of retaining tradition, history and romance” while Richard Requa called it “the architecture of Southern California.”1 In recent years, his- torians such as Carey McWilliams, Kevin Starr, William Deverell, Phoebe S. Kropp and Matthew Bokovoy have explored what they see as the hidden racism, economic exploitation, and deep class divisions that were served by the romantic Spanish-past mythology that evolved throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, including its architectural expression.2 Nevertheless, others disagree, and Mission- and Spanish-style architecture remains as popular as ever and continues to be seen as an accurate reflection of San Diego’s heritage. The San Diego Historical Society holds a large number of photographs, blueprints, and other materials which reveal how the Spanish past was constructed in Southern California. This article examines the work of a number of architects who developed the Spanish colonial style in San Diego during the early years of the twentieth century, including Irving Gill, William Hebbard, Bertram Goodhue, Carleton Winslow, Richard Requa, Hazel Wood Waterman, Lilian Rice and William Templeton Johnson.

    THE SAN DIEGO ZOO AND BALBOA PARK The San Diego Zoo occupies a special place in San Diego in terms of its local appeal and its non-local celebrity. To many it is the number one symbol of San Diego. It is the first topic someone who has heard of the City is likely to ask about. It would be pointless to claim it is the best Zoo in the United States or in the world. Nonetheless, it can be ranked as one of the world’s best zoos with or without the Wild Animal Park that acts as a counterpart to the centrally-located Zoo. The Wild Animal Park is within the sprawling territory of San Diego though it is closer to downtown Escondido than to downtown San Diego. If a zoo is to be considered as a progressive, scientific and humane institution the Wild Animal Park is ahead of the San Diego Zoo, which is handicapped by a plan that grew out of a past when standards for the care of animals were perfunctory and love of animals was at a sentimental and unscientific level.(1) In 1916, J.C. Thompson, a surgeon in the U. S. Navy seriously proposed that school children should feed the animals in the upcoming San Diego Zoo the remains of their lunches!(2) The Zoo existed in Balboa Park before the Panama-California Exposition of 1915. There were paddocks for animals and birds scattered about the park, in level land and in canyons. Visitations were not restricted as the animals were meant to be seen; however fences kept people from getting too close.
