We celebrate Mary, who humbly and gladly accepted God’s will when she said “Yes” to our Lord. As Twitter @dunstandolphins we honour Mary and all mothers, we are reminded of the many blessing mothers bestow upon their children each and every day. Let us keep Mary and all mothers in our thoughts and prayers so that the honour and respect they deserve is not limited to one day or month in the year. We begin the month of May with Catholic Education Week, which is recognized throughout Ontario during the week of April 30 - May 5. During this week, the Catholic community celebrates the unique and distinctive contribution that Catholic schools make to our students, our community and our province. Catholic Education Week is a welcome opportunity to celebrate the mission of our Catholic schools as they strive to integrate the Gospel values of Jesus Christ in every aspect of the school’s life and curriculum. This year’s theme is: “Walking Forward Together.” From Your Catholic School Trustee Luz Del Rosario Catholic Education Week April 30th to May 5th is Catholic Education Week in Ontario. This week is set aside to celebrate the gift of publicly funded Catholic schools in our province. Publicly funded Catholic education has existed in this province since 1841 and its graduates have served Ontario and Canada very well. And I hope that this will continue. The 2017 CEW theme and its five sub themes are drawn from three contemporary Catholic documents that address the need for reconciliation and renewal – in our lives, with our families, in our relationships with others and in our relationship with our environment and our common global future. Our Catholic schools are faith based schools, firmly birthed in the Gospel Values of Jesus Christ. This permeates throughout all of the curriculum and the activities that take place in a Catholic school. From 1841 church leaders and Catholic trustees doggedly sustained a fight for the right of Catholics to attend their own publicly funded Catholic schools. We enjoy this right today because of the sacrifice and determination of people who built Catholic education despite opposition and discrimination both political and legal. The challenges to the existence of publicly funded Catholic education are alive today. In an increasing secular Ontario, there are those who see publicly funded Catholic education as anachronistic and discriminatory. But, Catholic education has and continues to contribute significantly to Ontario and to Canada in the contributions of all of our wonderful graduates of our Catholic system. We must stay awake. We must not take anything for granted. We must know the facts. We are proud that our children are graduates of Catholic schools. I am proud to be a Catholic school trustee. I am proud to be a part of the Dufferin-Peel school system. I encourage you to visit your local Catholic schools. Check websites to find out about activities taking place during this special week. The theme of this Catholic Education Week is “Walking Forward Together.” “Loving God, we pray that we might have the strength to walk in the footsteps of your Son when our world is calling us to walk a different path. As a community of faith in Dufferin-Peel may we support one another in the knowledge that this path, alone, leads to true happiness and freedom. We make this prayer through Jesus our friend and brother. Amen.” We thank God for Catholic Education. We ask for your constant support and ask the good Lord to bless you and your family always.
