Your neighborhood is invited to participate with many other neighborhoods and businesses across the country in celebration of National Night Out on Tuesday evening, August 7, 2018. National Night Out is a crime and drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and co-sponsored locally by the Evans Police Department. This year is the 35th anniversary of this event with over 38 million people across the country expected to participate.

National Night Out is designed to: • Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness. • Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime efforts. • Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police/community partnerships. • Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and increasingly aware of their surroundings. Get Involved Participating neighborhoods nationwide are asked to turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors, citizens, and police. Neighborhoods will be hosting a variety of events ranging from small potlucks and barbeques to large block parties and business after-hour events. Some additional event ideas include; but are not limited to, ice cream socials, games, contests, discussing neighborhood issues, setting Tuesday, August 7 neighborhood goals, beautifying a common area, discussing or planning a Neighborhood Watch Program. It’s up to you – be creative, have fun and celebrate with your neighbors! Registration Registration is free, so register your neighborhood for this year’s event today. You do NOT have to be a current Neighborhood Watch neighborhood to participate. National Night Out is for everyone! Register now and begin planning your event as soon as possible. All Aboard www.evanscolorado.gov Rabies Case in Evans Earlier this summer, the Weld County Department of Public Health & Environment confirmed a case of rabies in a kitten found in Evans. You can´t tell if an animal has rabies by just looking at it so always use caution around animals you don’t know. Here are some things to be aware of to stay safe. One significant clue to identify a possible rabid animal is if they are behaving strangely. According to the Centers for Disease Control, some animals may act mad when they have rabies. They will be hostile and may try to bite you or other animals. In movies, animals with rabies look like they are foaming at the mouth. What´s really happening is that the rabies makes them have more saliva and that makes them drool. Other animals may act timid or shy when they have rabies. This is the most common kind. A wild animal might move slowly or act tame. You might be able to easily get close to it. Since that´s not the way wild animals usually act, you should remember that something could be wrong. The only way doctors can know for sure if an animal or a person has rabies is to do laboratory tests. The best thing to do is to never feed or approach a wild animal. Be careful of pets that you do not know. If you see a stray dog or cat, don´t pet it. If you are bit by an animal, see your doctor right away. If any animal is acting strangely, call our local animal control officer for help. Evans Community Technician Officer Thomasson can be reached at 970-475-2265 [email protected]
