The lepidopteran fauna of the former military training area near Oleško (Czech Republic: Ústecký Region) was studied in the year 2008. This area is on sandy ground, the predominant habitats are dry Scots pine forests growing on sand. 700 species were recorded, many of them are markedly psammophilous. Some characteristic spe- cies are very abundant there, namely on open habitats Aroga velocella (Zeller, 1839), Teleiopsis diffinis (Haworth, 1828), Platytes alpinellus (Hübner, 1813), Pyrausta ostrinalis (Hübner, 1796), Paradrina selini (Boisduval, 1840), Agrotis vestigialis (Hufnagel, 1766), Eilema pygmaeolum (Doubleday, 1847)���������������������������������������, some other species were only recorded individually (Aristotelia brizella (Treitschke, 1833), Helcystogramma lineolellum (Zeller, 1839), Pediasia fasce- linella (Hübner, 1813), Lythria cruentaria (Hufnagel, 1767) and Hadena irregularis (Hufnagel, 1766)). Sanchiz (*) RESUMEN Durante el periodo 1978-1994 se han descrito cerca de 2.000 especies animales nue- vas para la ciencia en territorio ibérico-balear. Se presenta como apéndice un listado completo de las especies (1978-1993), ordenadas taxonómicamente, así como de sus referencias bibliográficas. Como tendencias generales en este proceso de inventario de la biodiversidad se aprecia un incremento moderado y sostenido en el número de taxones descritos, junto a una cada vez mayor contribución de los autores españoles. Es cada vez mayor el número de especies publicadas en revistas que aparecen en el Science Citation Index, así como el uso del idioma inglés. La mayoría de los phyla, clases u órdenes mues- tran gran variación en la cantidad de especies descritas cada año, dado el pequeño núme- ro absoluto de publicaciones. Los insectos son claramente el colectivo más estudiado, pero se aprecia una disminución en su importancia relativa, asociada al incremento de estudios en grupos poco conocidos como los nematodos. ABSTRACT Description of new animal species from the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands (1978-1994): Taxonomic trends and systematic list During the period 1978-1994 about 2.000 new animal species have been described in the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands. A complete list of these new species for 1978-1993, taxonomically arranged, and their bibliographic references is given in an appendix. -

The biology of these taxa is, altogether, well-known. The hostplants and the parasites are reported. The male and female genitalia are illustrated. The currently ascertained distribution is given. The synonymy is established between Stephensia staudingeri Nielsen & Traugott-Olsen, 1981 and Stephensia brunnichella (Linnaeus, 1767). S. de Medeiros1 & Cassandra G. Extavour1,2* Over the course of evolution, organism size has diversified markedly. Changes in size are thought to have occurred because of developmental, morphological and/or ecological pressures. To perform phylogenetic tests of the potential effects of these pressures, here we generated a dataset of more than ten thousand descriptions of insect eggs, and combined these with genetic and life-history datasets. We show that, across eight orders of magnitude of variation in egg volume, the relationship between size and shape itself evolves, such that previously predicted global patterns of scaling do not adequately explain the diversity in egg shapes. We show that egg size is not correlated with developmental rate and that, for many insects, egg size is not correlated with adult body size. Instead, we find that the evolution of parasitoidism and aquatic oviposition help to explain the diversification in the size and shape of insect eggs. Our study suggests that where eggs are laid, rather than universal allometric constants, underlies the evolution of insect egg size and shape. Size is a fundamental factor in many biological processes. The size of an 526 families and every currently described extant hexapod order24 organism may affect interactions both with other organisms and with (Fig. 1a and Supplementary Fig. 1). We combined this dataset with the environment1,2, it scales with features of morphology and physi- backbone hexapod phylogenies25,26 that we enriched to include taxa ology3, and larger animals often have higher fitness4. -

Insect Genomics involving the studies of the whole genome sequences are being developed and gene expression and regulation studies are elucidating their roles in regulating the vector competence. This finds importance in deducing strategies for vector control thereby preventing disease spread that is fatal to man and animal life. In this review we have studied the medical entomology (i) from historical perspective (ii) diverse role of arthropods in causing diseases (iii) common pathogens transmitted by arthropod vectors (iv) major arthropod borne diseases (v) pharmaceutically important insects. -

Abstract The taxonomic history of the genus Urodeta Stainton 1869 (Lepidoptera: Elachistidae: Elachistinae) is presented. Three new species: Urodeta acinacella Sruoga et De Prins, sp. nov., U. quadrifida Sruoga et De Prins, sp. nov. and U. trilobata Sruoga et De Prins, sp. nov., from South Africa are described. The new species are diagnosed and illustrated with photo- graphs of the adults and genitalia. A global, annotated catalogue of the Urodeta species diversity is presented. The impact of formerly published taxonomic decisions on the position of Urodeta within Gelechioidea is discussed. Key words: Lepidoptera, Elachistidae, Elachistinae, Urodeta, new species, South Africa Introduction The apoditrysian family Elachistidae, including its subfamily Elachistinae, has recently gained a comprehensive phylogenetic treatment (Kaila 1999, 2004; Kaila & Sugisima 2011, Kaila et al. 2011) culminating with a landmark monograph on the biodiversity of its Australian fauna (Kaila 2011). However, sub-saharan Africa still remains as one of the major sources for new discoveries especially in fragmented and restricted microhabits suitable for the elachistine fauna (Landry 2011). -

Unfortunately, the overview of research on their fauna in Serbia has not been done yet. Therefore, based on the data from the literature sources and the results of our research, the first overview of leaf miner fauna research in Serbia was made. It was found that 363 species of leaf miners were ascertained in Serbia so far. They are classified as follows: 270 species from 26 families of the order Lepidoptera, 61 species from 5 families of the order Diptera, 21 species from 3 families of the order Coleoptera, and 11 species from 1 family of the order Hymenoptera. The majority of species of the order Lepidoptera belongs to the families Gracillariidae (71), Nepticulidae (61) and Coleophoridae (37), of the order Diptera to the family Agromyzidae (53), and from the order Coleoptera to the families Curculionidae (12) and Chrysomelidae (7). All species of the order Hymenoptera (11) belong to the family Tenthredinidae. Monophagous and Oligophagous species are dominant among the identified species of leaf miners in Serbia. The majority of the species (57%) develop on woody plants. Most of them (30) on the species of the genus Quercus, Prunus (20), Malus (19), and Populus (19).
