Twitcident has been developed to process and filter this information in real-time for interested parties by monitoring a set of predefined topics, exploiting humans as sensors. An analysis of the relevant information by an operator can result in an estimation of severity, and an operator can act accordingly. However, among all relevant and useful content that is extracted, also a lot of irrelevant noise is present. Our goal is to improve the filter in such a way that the majority of information pre- sented by Twitcident is relevant. To this end we designed an artifact consisting of several components, developed within a dynamic framework. -

Teun van Hout S1528513 Master thesis Political Science: Nationalism, Ethnic Conflict & Development. Supervisor: Dr. Vasiliki Tsagkroni. Second reader: Dr. M.B. Longo. 10871 words. “The influence of cultural nationalism on the discourse of two Dutch political parties: The PvdA and VVD” Abstract. Since the early 2000’s cultural nationalism has a strong presence in the discourse of some Dutch political parties. While mostly associated with the far right, the past years cultural nationalist discourse has become mainstream. Under influence of public opinion other parties have started using it as well. As cultural nationalism is has an exclusive nature, this can be potentially harmful to groups in society. In this thesis the swing towards cultural nationalist discourse by the reaction of two centre parties formerly not associated with cultural nationalist discourse on law initiatives linked to Dutch culture, tradition, and identity will be examined. The initiatives, the Burqa Ban and the Black Pete law were both proposed by the PVV to protect Dutch culture. The parties used are the Dutch social democrats, the PvdA, and the Dutch liberals, the VVD. Table of contents. Abstract 1. Introduction. 2 2. Theory. 4 3. Literature Review. 7 4. Bias in Television Interviews Towards Politicians
Bias in television interviews towards politicians Master thesis Communication Science Student: Faranak Babai (10437983) Supervised by: Marjolein Moorman Graduate School of Communication University of Amsterdam June 2015 Abstract Television can be biased in many different ways; in this research two ways of possible bias are measured. The first is the bias in the representation of politicians on television. The second is the bias of the journalists in their approach towards politicians in interviews, on television. This study investigates the first type for the following characteristics: age, gender, experience, and political party and the second type for the following characteristics: Left/right winged party, coalition/oppositional party and gender. Bias is measured using six elements being: initiative, directness, assertiveness, accountability, opposition and persistence of the journalist, a research tool that is developed by Claymen, Elliott, Heritage and Mcdonald (2007) and improved by Huls and Varwijk (2011). Bias is measured in the political oriented program Pauw, a late night show about topicality with, among other guests, politicians, journalists and lawyers. The result of the study show that indeed bias is found. The first bias measured that males were more represented than females and among political parties, the PvdA was more represented than all the other parties. The second bias measures, left winged politicians, oppositional party politicians and males were approached more biased than right winged politicians, coalition party politicians and females. In the discussion these results were put in context with other bias studies and implications for future research are discussed. 2 Introduction The political arena is inseparably bound to television. It is even unimaginable without television. -

Personalization of Political Newspaper Coverage: a Longitudinal Study in the Dutch Context Since 1950
Personalization of political newspaper coverage: a longitudinal study in the Dutch context since 1950 Ellis Aizenberg, Wouter van Atteveldt, Chantal van Son, Franz-Xaver Geiger VU University, Amsterdam This study analyses whether personalization in Dutch political newspaper coverage has increased since 1950. In spite of the assumption that personalization increased over time in The Netherlands, earlier studies on this phenomenon in the Dutch context led to a scattered image. Through automatic and manual content analyses and regression analyses this study shows that personalization did increase in The Netherlands during the last century, the changes toward that increase however, occurred earlier on than expected at first. This study also shows that the focus of reporting on politics is increasingly put on the politician as an individual, the coverage in which these politicians are mentioned however became more substantive and politically relevant. Keywords: Personalization, content analysis, political news coverage, individualization, privatization Introduction When personalization occurs a focus is put on politicians and party leaders as individuals. The context of the news coverage in which they are mentioned becomes more private as their love lives, upbringing, hobbies and characteristics of personal nature seem increasingly thoroughly discussed. An article published in 1984 in the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf forms a good example here, where a horse race betting event, which is attended by several ministers accompanied by their wives and girlfriends is carefully discussed1. Nowadays personalization is a much-discussed phenomenon in the field of political communication. It can simply be seen as: ‘a process in which the political weight of the individual actor in the political process increases 1 Ererondje (17 juli 1984). -

Federico Bonomi Populists in the Parliaments
Paper prepared for the 7th Euroacademia International Conference The European Union and the Politicization of Europe 25 – 26 January 2019 Bruges, Belgium This paper is a draft Please do not cite or distribute 1 Populists in the Parliaments: a comparative analysis of populist parliamentarian behaviour concerning European Integration Federico Bonomi. St Antony’s College, University of Oxford Abstract The subject of my article is the populist political discourse about European integration within the parliamentary Committees of the Member States. The member states on which I have conducted my analysis are Italy, Austria, and the Netherlands. As selection criterion, I used Arend Lijphart's classification that puts them in the category of consociational democracies. The period of analysis of the speeches includes the end of the last legislatures and the beginning of the current ones. The parties that I have analysed are the 5 Star Movement and the League in Italy, the Austrian Freedom Party, and the Dutch Party for Freedom. In detail, I dealt with the parliamentarians of the Committees relevant to the European themes and the members of governments based on a coalition of populist parties who were summoned in the Committees. The positions of parliamentarians were inquired on the following topics: deepening of European integration in economic and social issues, enlargement, defence, and immigration. The sources of the article are the stenographic reports of the parliamentary committees present on the institutional sites of the parliaments. The present work demonstrates the complexity of the European integration discourse and the contradictions present in the single parties and coalitions, the diversity of approaches between the forces of the different states, and the weight of national interests on populists’ political claims. -

Selective Solidarity the Politics of Immigrants' Social Rights in Western
Selective Solidarity The politics of immigrants’ social rights in Western welfare states By Edward Anthony Koning A thesis submitted to the Graduate Program in Political Studies in conformity with the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada April, 2013 Copyright © Edward Anthony Koning, 2013 ABSTRACT Recent research has cast doubt on the suggestion that immigration weakens the societal foundation of a redistributive welfare state: there is little evidence of a negative relationship between immigration-induced diversity and public support for social programs. This research has largely overlooked, however, that unease about immigration is likely to have a more selective effect on solidarity. In some countries, the public has become less willing to share benefits with newcomers, and policy-makers have acted upon that sentiment, implementing limits and restrictions on immigrants’ welfare access. By combining quantitative data analysis of fourteen countries and a qualitative comparison of the Netherlands, Canada, and Sweden, this research explores when and how such expressions of selective solidarity are most likely to occur. The main findings are threefold. First, there is no evidence that actual patterns of immigrant welfare dependence are an important driver of selective solidarity or immigrant-excluding welfare reforms. Second, more important is how those patterns are politically translated. In the Netherlands, high levels of immigrant welfare dependence are commonly described as a sign that immigrants are lazy welfare cheats. In Canada and Sweden, the discourse is less accusatory and divisive, and attempts at welfare exclusion are consequently rarer. Country characteristics, in particular the political strength of anti-immigrant parties, the nature of national identity, and the structure of the welfare state, explain why the political translation differs between countries. -
Geert Wilders En De Partij Voor De Vrijheid
