I HEART HUCKABEES „How am I not myself?“ – hier soll einmal das Ende der Anfang sein. Es ist eine existenzielle Frage: Wie kann ich nicht ich selbst sein? Noch unheilvollere Probleme schließen sich nahtlos an diesen fundamentalen Selbstzweifel an. Die Wissenschaft, ganz besonders natürlich die Philosophie beschäftigt sich bereits seit Jahrtausenden mit diesen bohrenden Fragen – im Spielfilm, so meint man, haben derartige Themenkomplexe keinen Platz. Die MATRIX- Trilogie, die gleich Dutzende vollkommen unterschiedlicher philosophischer Denkweisen einander gegenüber stellt, ist wohl die berühmte Ausnahme als Bestätigung der Regel. Der amerikanische Filmemacher David O. Russell lässt in seinem neuen Film I HEART HUCKABEES zwei gegensätzliche Modelle der Metaphysik aufeinander prallen: Da ist auf der einen Seite die Lehre zweier von Lily Tomlin und Dustin Hoffman grandios gespielten Existenzdetektive, der zufolge alle Elemente des Universums miteinander verbunden sind, in dem daher auch der einzelne Mensch bloß seinen Platz finden muss. Andererseits der pragmatische bis nihilistische Ansatz einer von Isabelle Huppert dargestellten französischen Autorin, die alles Weltliche für unvermeidlich hält. Hinter dieses Gedankenkonstrukt kommt man jedoch allenfalls mit einer gewissen Vorkenntnis und nach einigen Tagen des Reflektierens. Verpackt ist die Philosophie von I HEART HUCKABEES in der tragikkomischen Geschichte des liebenswert neurotischen Aktivisten Albert Markovski – erstklassig dargeboten vom aufstrebenden Schauspieler Jason Schwartzman –, der sich in seiner Verzweiflung über einen unerklärlichen Zufall und die Unergründlichkeit seines Daseins überhaupt an die Existential Detectives wendet. Doch anstatt schnelle Antworten auf seine brennenden Fragen zu erhalten, tritt Markovski in seinem Eifer auf umfassendes Verständnis eine komplizierte Kette von Ereignissen los, in die geschwind auch ein Arbeitskollege (Jude Law), seine modelnde Freundin (Naomi Watts) und ein cholerischer Öl-Gegner, dargestellt vom ewig unterschätzten Mark Wahlberg, verwickelt werden. -

Introduction: A real failure does not need an excuse. It is an end in itself. – Gertrude Stein We are all familiar with the many bromides teaching us the value of failure on the path to success. It builds character, shows perseverance and dedication, demonstrates willingness to take a risk, and so forth. All perhaps true, but all constrained by a view of failure as a means to an end, an unfortunately necessary obstacle to be overcome. One may learn from failures, but what is mostly meant is that one learns not to do that particular thing again. Failing is fine, especially on someone else’s dime, if you gain some experience to avoid future failures. We take here an alternative view of failure. What about failure as a good? What about the intrinsic value of failure? How about failure that contains valuable data, not just an error message? Failure that is a critical part of the process, not a means to an end? Failure that stands shoulder to shoulder with success? Can there be such a thing as positive failure? Can failure make progress? Can we use failure to improve creativity, education, or behavior? How do we research failure? How do we discover important failures? How do we recognize important failures? This symposium will investigate these and other perspectives on failure across disciplines, searching for commonalities and differences. -

Two series were made and a total of 90 episodes: 1978-80 and 1988-90. There's also a 1975 movie. Avatar (2009) FO James Cameron's baby. Weirdly, the second biggest grossing film in history ($3B so far). The paradise of Pandora. Unobtainium, a rare mineral that's a room-temperature superconductor. A dying Sigourney Weaver, who forms a very different relationship with these aliens. Lots of cool critters. If you love it, you're in luck: Cameron has already shot Avatar 2 and 3, for release around Christmas 2021 and 2023, with two more after that. By then, the forces of greed and armed repression will have been erased from the universe. Bambi (1942) FF, A Disney's fifth animation and by some estimates, the third best animated film of all time. What's it doing here among environmental films? Bambi's a mule deer, silly, Thumper's a rabbit, and Flower's a skunk. Before the Flood (2016) FC Award-winning documentary directed by Fisher Stevens, narrated and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, who together toured the world for three years finding evidence of global warming and its calamitous effects. -
