Oscars and America 2011
AMERICA AND THE MOVIES WHAT THE ACADEMY AWARD NOMINEES FOR BEST PICTURE TELL US ABOUT OURSELVES I am glad to be here, and honored. I spent some time with Ben this summer in the exotic venues of Oxford and Cambridge, but it was on the bus ride between the two where we got to share our visions and see the similarities between the two. I am excited about what is happening here at Arizona State and look forward to seeing what comes of your efforts. I’m sure you realize the opportunity you have. And it is an opportunity to study, as Karl Barth once put it, the two Bibles. One, and in many ways the most important one is the Holy Scripture, which tells us clearly of the great story of Creation, Fall, Redemption and Consummation, the story by which all stories are measured for their truth, goodness and beauty. But the second, the book of Nature, rounds out that story, and is important, too, in its own way. Nature in its broadest sense includes everything human and finite. Among so much else, it gives us the record of humanity’s attempts to understand the reality in which God has placed us, whether that humanity understands the biblical story or not. And that is why we study the great novels, short stories and films of humankind: to see how humanity understands itself and to compare that understanding to the reality we find proclaimed in the Bible. Without those stories, we would have to go through the experiences of fallen humanity to be able to sympathize with them, and we don’t want to have to do that, unless we have a screw loose somewhere in our brain. -

Was NOT like MovieBy Book LoverPerhaps me not enjoying the book too much was that I thought it was going to be just like the movie "The Fighter" and, in my opinion, was not. For instance I was disapointed not to read hardly anything about Charlene who was a strong character in the movie, they barely mentioned her until the very last pages and it was very brief, I thought she helped Micky a lot with his confidence and career and she only made one page?! Also I thought that the book would come with some pictures of the family, I was curious too see what they really looked like in real life and there were no pictures, also some of the people depicted in the movie were very different in the book, George for example, and I wanted too read some more about Dickie and his struggles. I guess I just expected something different, more towards the movie theme, and more of family instead of boxing. That being said if you are a Micky Ward fan or a fan of boxing you will enjoy this book since that is basically what it is about, lots of boxing info and much about various other fighters, not a bad book, partially my fault I guess I expected something different and pictures would of been nice. -
This Is How We Learn: the Intensive Experience from the Desk of D
WINTER 2018 Hawken REVIEW This is How We Learn: The Intensive Experience From the Desk of D. Scott Looney “Just as truly as each individual has different physical characteristics, so truly does he possess individual and peculiar talents, wants, powers, tastes, instincts, and tendencies. And because of this there can be no real and efficient education where a general course of instruction and a general method of training is applied to a group of [students].” – James A. Hawken, 1915 At opening meetings in August, I gave each faculty and staff member a copy of author Todd Rose’s recent book, The End of Average: How We Succeed in a World That Values Sameness, because it resonates remarkably well not only with the direction we are heading, but with our founder James A. Hawken’s original commitment to individualized education. The concept of “the end of average,” while by some standards is not new, is groundbreaking when viewed in the context of today’s approach to education and the workplace. I highly recommend the book. This issue of the Review highlights one of the many ways Hawken is taking the lead in making learning more individualized and relevant: the Upper School Intensives. Now in their eighth year, the Intensive program has evolved to the point where it has become part of the natural rhythm of the school year. Its uniqueness and success has drawn over fifty schools from across the country to visit Hawken to see just how it is implemented, and many schools are adopting versions of it if not mimicking our approach to a tee. -
Boxers of the 1940S in This Program, We Will Explore the Charismatic World of Boxing in the 1940S
Men’s Programs – Discussion Boxers of the 1940s In this program, we will explore the charismatic world of boxing in the 1940s. Read about the top fighters of the era, their rivalries, and key bouts, and discuss the history and cultural significance of the sport. Preparation & How-To’s • Print photos of boxers of the 1940s for participants to view or display them on a TV screen. • Print a large-print copy of this discussion activity for participants to follow along with and take with them for further study. • Read the article aloud and encourage participants to ask questions. • Use Discussion Starters to encourage conversation about this topic. • Read the Boxing Trivia Q & A and solicit answers from participants. Boxers of the 1940s Introduction The 1940s were a unique heyday for the sport of boxing, with some iconic boxing greats, momentous bouts, charismatic rivalries, and the introduction of televised matches. There was also a slowdown in boxing during this time due to the effects of World War II. History Humans have fought each other with their fists since the dawn of time, and boxing as a sport has been around nearly as long. Boxing, where two people participate in hand-to-hand combat for sport, began at least several thousand years ago in the ancient Near East. A relief from Sumeria (present-day Iraq) from the third millennium BC shows two facing figures with fists striking each other’s jaws. This is the earliest known depiction of boxing. Similar reliefs and paintings have also been found from the third and second millennium onward elsewhere in the ancient Middle East and Egypt. -
