This is performed mainly by a qualitative method of investigation, studying lyrical content published on a number of extreme metal albums, thereafter relating the lyrical progression to the progession of the scene as a whole and also to the development of individual religious belief and practise. The lyrically expressed manifestations of religiosity within the extreme metal scene prove to be related to religious practise in some cases, most visibly in the Christian parts of the scene. The study also indicates that development of religious expression often is evident regardless of religious preference. This development also regularly relates to an increase in musical evolution and prowess often achieved with increased age and maturity. Musically and lyrically, the extreme metal scene displays transgressive attributes which assist both individual and group in the process of creating identity, meaning and individuality. These musicians use their nations’ Viking histories and saga material as inspiration for their lyrics and nostalgic reimaginings of the past are used to make commentaries on modern society and hopes for the future. Viking metal bands use the Middle Ages and the Viking Age as a screen upon which to play with nostalgic imaginings of what life was like then or at least how it should have been based upon aspects of the collective memory of their communities which can include the works of historians and that of artists and political figures. They use this as a means of criticizing the modern Christian world they perceive as being weaker than the ancient one. The three main components of Viking metal are: • The idealization of a national past from which an ethnic identity can be constructed on a national, Scandinavian, or pan-Nordic level. • A staunch opposition to Christianity that is based on the perceived oppression of their ancestors in the Viking Age for which they lust for vengeance. This vengeance is described as taking place in a grand Ragnarok-inspired battle between the pagan forces and the Christian.

Prof. József Mezei Abstract: The music industry is undergoing an extensive transformation as a result of growth in streaming data and various AI technologies, which allow for more sophisticated marketing and sales methods. Since consumption patterns vary by different factors such as genre and engagement, each customer segment needs to be targeted uniquely for maximal efficiency. A challenge in this genre-based segmentation method lies in today’s large music databases and their maintenance, which have shown to require exhausting and time-consuming work. This has led to automatic music genre classification (AMGC) becoming the most common area of research within the growing field of music information retrieval (MIR). A large portion of previous research has been shown to suffer from serious integrity issues. The purpose of this study is to re-evaluate the current state of applying machine learning for the task of AMGC. Low-level features are derived from audio signals to form a custom-made data set consisting of five subgenres of heavy metal music. Different parameter sets and learning algorithms are weighted against each other to derive insights into the success factors. The results suggest that admirable results can be achieved even with fuzzy subgenres, but that a larger number of high-quality features are needed to further extend the accuracy for reliable real-life applications.

Peer-to-peer-based file-sharing beyond the dichotomy of 'downloading is theft' vs. 'information wants to be free': How Swedish file-sharers motivate their action Jonas Andersson Goldsmiths, University of London for the degree of PhD in Media & Communications 1 (346) Abstract Peer-to-peer-based file-sharing beyond the dichotomy of 'downloading is theft' vs. 'information wants to be free': How Swedish file-sharers motivate their action This thesis aims to offer a comprehensive analysis ofpeer-to-peer-basedJile-sharing by focusing on the discourses about use, agency and motivation involved, and how they interrelate with the infrastructural propelties of file-sharing. Peer-to-peer-based file-sharing is here defined as the unrestricted duplication of digitised media content between autonomous end-nodes on the Internet. It has become an extremely popular pastime, largely involving music, film, games and other media which is copied without the permission of the copyright holders. Due to its illegality, the popular understanding of the phenomenon tends to overstate its conflictual elements, framing it within a legalistic 'copyfight'. This is most markedly manifested in the dichotomised image of file-sharers as 'pirates' allegedly opposed to the enteltainment industry. The thesis is an attempt to counter this dichotomy by using a more heterodox synthesis of perspectives, aiming to assimilate the phenomenon's complex intermingling of technological, infrastructural, economic and political factors. The geographic context of this study is Sweden, a country characterised by early broadband penetration and subsequently widespread unrestricted file-sharing, paralleled by a lively and well-informed public debate. This gives geographic specificity and further context to the file-sharers' own justificatory discourses, serving to highlight and problematise some principal assumptions about the phenomenon.
