The Lutheran Reformation made a break in episcopal succes- sion-but,a8 in Fngland,continuity in Faith and worship was maintainedo No account of the Icelandic Church exists in English* Jon Helgason, Bishop of Iceland 1917-38* has published in Icelandic a valuable though undocumented history of the Christianity of his country (Kristnisaga Islands, 2 vols. "Reykjavik 1925-7)• The only other history is the imposing Latin work of Bishop Finnur Jdnsson in four quarto volumes complete to 1740 (Historia Ecclesiastica Islandiae ^Copen• hagen 1772*8),. continued by Bishop Pdtur P<?tursson (1740- 1840), Original sources, are markedly reliable• An early priest Ari Thorgilsson (1067-^1148) j known as' the Wise, set himself to collect accurate records of his country's origins-which are contained in Islendinga-bdk and Kristni Saga, boih . composed about the year 1130, Landnaraabdkj the Book of tlie Settlement, compiled about the year llPOj, gives a detailed account of the colonization of Iceland (874-930)0 All these records pay special attention to Christian origins and development* lo The plural of this word is prestar, but just as sagas has become the anglicised plural of saga,by reason of our familiarity with those attractive writings, so wis&h 'prestur* - our friendship with many of them has anglicised the plural.The word'pastors1 has an un- Icelandie connotation. ii Ecclesiastical traditions are embodied in the early sagas, accounts of bishops and leading churchmen*written by authors evidently in close touch with the periods they describeo These Lives were collected and published in two stout volumes by Mollers of Copenhagen in 1858 and 1872, a monumental work now out of print and almost impossible to obtains They were presented to me on my leaving the country by the local printers of 'The Mid• night Sun' (a paper T edited for the forces in Iceland), a typical gesture of goodwill« These accounts carry us to about the mldc'le of the xivth century, after which we have, numerous and varied Annals* and a succession of Church and State documents, collected In the thirteen volumes of the valuable J&iplo- matarium Island!cum. After the Reformation, which led to a revival of interest in past history and literature, a remarkably large number of personal records/carefully - drawn up by a literary nation inspired by the noble ambition to make plain to posterity that the same fresh springs of inspiration fed the apparent backwater in which they lived as filled the larger stream which flowed past them unconcernedo Of the many travellers' reports and accounts drawn upon for details referring to the xvilith and xixth century special mention must be made of the Reverend Ebenezer Henderson's delightful Journal (1813-4).Ammost alone of scribacious visitors he, like the present writer appears to have spent more than a month or two in summer in the country and to have made contacts in all parts of the hospitable islande This Account of the Church in Iceland has been given the title of Saga not so much because of the appro• priateness of the attractive word (adsit omen), as for the non-abstract method It implies of letting the story itself delineate the characters of its heroes and the principles and problems involved• This Icelandic Church Sega investigates the traces of early Christianity in the island among pre-Settlement culdees and early settlers,and describes the militant missionary efforts which led to the official adoption of Christianity in AD 1000, It recounts the development and consolidation of ill the .Church under the first seven Bishops of Skatlholt (1056-1211) and their contemporaries lit the northern diocese of Hdiar . including the story of Iceland's two episcopal saints* St.Jon and St.Thorlafc. A survey is attempted of ecclesiastical influence on education and letters and of difficulties, which arose over the introduction of Canon Law especially in the matter of Church ownership0 The independence of Icelandic churchmanship in the Middle Ages is illustrated in its different aspects. A description follows of the decadence of the Church and nation in the xivth and xvth centuries after, the union with Norway in 1262 and a visitation of plague and physical disasters; with an.estimate of the forces in moral« socials economic and intellectual spheres making for a reformation. After, the Lutheran Reformation was imposed by force on apathetic laity, bishops proved the leading men of the age which followed in learning and letters. In a period of unusually severe volcanic devastations- followed by disease and famine, the mystical side of Lutheran!era found expression in the poems of Hallgrimur Pdtursson (ob AD 1674) and the sermons of Bishop Jdn Vidalin (6b. AD 1720). though in the next century latitudinarianisin prevailed* In the 26th century Church and State carried into effect a growing dissociation from Denmark Culminat• ing in the Proclaimatioh of Independence on June 17th I941. This war has intensified the. country's isolation. The Icelandic Church is cut off from Its sister churches on the Continent.     Volume 3: 2010-2011 ISSN: 2041-6776 School of English Studies With a particular focus on The Saga of Grettir the Strong, Gisfi Surrson’s Saga and Nijar’s Saga, discuss the nature and role of the supernatural in Icelandic saga literature and assess the extent to which it reveals a religious significance. Georgina Georghiou At the end of the Viking Age, the Icelanders developed a literary tradition in the vernacular, Old Icelandic, in which the legendary tales of Iceland’s sogooki (the Saga Age, c. 9E1030 CE) were written.’ Hitherto sustained by the oral tradition (hence the designation saga, from segja, to say, tell’), the tales which constitute the islendrgasogur (Sagas of Icelanders, written between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries) journeyed through phases of Iceland’s cultural evolution, most notably its political movement from the Commonwealth to the Norwegian monarchy in 1262 CE, and its religious conversion from Norse paganism to Christianity under the sovereignty of King Olaf Tryggvason (995-1000 CE). Chronicling events which occurred during and after this cultural whirlwind, the sagas in their present form reflect a mystical synthesis of Norse-pagan and Christian conceptions of the sacred, both of which incited a conviction in the Supernatural’. Despite their differences, they commonly present the Scandinavian world as one which interacts with unworldly beings and forces, and whilst this ‘unworldliness’ has contributed to the modern view that the sagas are ‘pseudo- historical’,5 for the medieval Icelander, they were a record of historical truth. The truth’ invested in the supernatural involves it, inevitably, in sacred matters, and the affiliation between the supernatural and the religious has thus been a highly debated topic among saga scholarship.

HAMMOND Ethnicity and the Writing of Medieval Scottish history1 ABSTRACT Historians have long tended to define medieval Scottish society in terms of interactions between ethnic groups. This approach was developed over the course of the long nineteenth century, a formative period for the study of medieval Scotland. At that time, many scholars based their analysis upon scientific principles, long since debunked, which held that medieval ‘peoples’ could only be understood in terms of ‘full ethnic packages’. This approach was combined with a positivist historical narrative that defined Germanic Anglo-Saxons and Normans as the harbingers of advances in Civilisation. While the prejudices of that era have largely faded away, the modern discipline still relies all too often on a dualistic ethnic framework. This is particularly evident in a structure of periodisation that draws a clear line between the ‘Celtic’ eleventh century and the ‘Norman’ twelfth. Furthermore, dualistic oppositions based on ethnicity continue, particu- larly in discussions of law, kingship, lordship and religion. Geoffrey Barrow’s Robert Bruce and the Community of the Realm of Scotland, first published in 1965 and now available in the fourth edition, is proba- bly the most widely read book ever written by a professional historian on the Middle Ages in Scotland.2 In seeking to introduce the thirteenth century to such a broad audience, Barrow depicted Alexander III’s Scot- land as fundamentally

BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS Þingvellir (Thingvellir) is the National Park where the Althing - an open-air assembly, which represented the whole of Iceland - was established in 930 and continued to meet until 1798. Over two weeks a year, the assembly set laws - seen as a covenant between free men - and settled disputes. The Althing has deep historical and symbolic associations for the people of Iceland. Located on an active volcanic site, the property includes the Þingvellir National Park and the remains of the Althing itself: fragments of around 50 booths built of turf and stone.

    DISSENTING OPINION OF JUDGE PETRÉN [Translation ] To my regret, 1 have felt obliged to vote against the Judgment and to append this dissenting opinion. The main reason why L felt unable to vote for the Judgment lay in the broad constructiori placed by the Court on the agreement concluded between the Parties by their 1961 Exchange of Notes, which constitutes the sole basis of the Court's jurisdiction to deal with the present case. In that respect 1, like my colleague Judge Ignacio-Pinto, share the view expressed by our colleagues Judges Gros and Onyeama in their dissenting opinions, to which 1 may therefore refer the reader. 1 need here Say no more than that the only question upon which the 1961 agreement entitles the Court to adjudikate is whether a measure whereby Iceland extends its zone of exclusive fisheries jurisdiction beyond a distance of 12 nautical miles froni the bas~clinesof its territorial waters is well founded in inter- national law. Certain passages of the Judgment appear to partake of the notion that the disputed extension by lceland of its fishery zone from the 12-mile to the 50-rnile limit is without foundation in international law. Thus paragraph 53 of the Judgment, after alluding to the contemporary tendencies of a nunlber of States to extend their fishery zones beyond the 12-mile limit, concludes by observing that "the Court, as a court of law, cannot render judgment sub sperie Iegis,ferendae, or anticipate the law before the legislator has laid it down". Paragraph 67 reflects the same attitude even more iclearly, for it States that "lceland's unilateral action .

Abstract This study explores how education and the medieval intellectual and pedagogical discipline of grammatica developed in Iceland during the medieval period, defined roughly from the official conversion to Christianity c.1000 to the Reformation c.1550. The first chapter deals with social, institutional, and financial aspects of teaching and learning in medieval Iceland, surveying key figures and places, but also arguing that more attention should be paid to the costs of learning and the effect of that on poor students. The second chapter addresses Latin education, discussing the importance of Latinity in medieval Iceland and the types of education that would involve Latin. It also addresses the idea of bilingual education and suggests ways in which extant vernacular writings can provide evidence for how Latin was taught and learned using the vernacular, using the model of Old English bilingual education.
