For every suicide, it is estimated that an average of six people are intimately affected and may continue to grieve for the departed for years afterwards. Even more than the mourners of other types of sudden death, these “survivors of suicide” tend to experience an intense bereavement complicated by difficult feelings of guilt and shame. Although not a comprehensive source on suicide, this booklet attempts to help survivors, and those who are concerned about them, with some of the questions and doubts that commonly arise in the attempt to come to terms with bereavement by suicide. For those who are worried about the possibility of suicide in themselves or others, sections are included on how to recognize the warning signs and what to do about them, as well as a separate section for suicide intervention with teenagers. Further resources are listed in the back of the booklet. WHY DOES SOMEONE COMMIT SUICIDE? Although some deceased leave notes which attempt to explain their suicide, generally a number of factors precede such a drastic decision. Most people who commit suicide are not choosing death itself. Often they are simply attempting to alleviate severe pain, whether physical or psychological. They may have tried other, unsuccessful, means of ending their suffering, leaving them with a sense of hopelessness in which suicide becomes a real option to end their anguish. Commonly, friends and family members of those who have committed suicide become consumed with unanswered questions about why a loved one may have taken his own life. Though feelings of guilt resulting from unresolved arguments, or some other failure in the relationship with the deceased, are understandable, they are generally not an accurate explanation of the decision to commit suicide, and can leave a survivor feeling unnecessarily responsible or guilty about something that was, in fact, beyond control. Often it is not possible to discover with certainty why someone has committed suicide. Sometimes a mental disorder, perhaps unrecognized, - 5 - such as depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, substance abuse, or some other mental illness, contributes to the act. Depression, for example, affects problem-solving abilities and can cause distorted thinking about one’s self-worth. Other mental illnesses, such as disorders that cause psychosis, which can distort the sufferer’s perceptions of reality, sometimes result in suicide. Alcohol and substance abuse also increase the risk that someone might choose to commit suicide. An accurate understanding of the thought processes which lead an individual to suicide is often difficult, if not impossible, to attain. Those who commit suicide may feel guilty about the effect that their decision will have on their friends and family, but their pain is such that suicide appears to be the only real option. Further, mental illness, when present, hinders one’s ability to register the magnitude and impact of such a choice. Generally, the decision is not a deliberate choice to leave loved ones; rather, it is most often an effort to assuage unbearable pain. WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN DONE TO PREVENT THIS? After the suicide of a loved one, family members and friends are often left to deal with a mix of difficult feelings. In these cases, it is natural for family and friends to question whether they could have prevented the death, and conflicting ideas within a family about the factors leading to a suicide can strain relationships. Patience with one another is essential, and staying connected without assigning blame—to one’s self or to others— is vital in supporting one another through the grieving. As in many other circumstances in life, the best course of action seems obvious when looking back. Certainly anyone who recognized tendencies towards self-harm in a loved one would take drastic measures to prevent its occurrence. In hindsight, signs that clearly indicate that a loved one was thinking about suicide may not have been, at the critical time, particularly alarming. Furthermore, even with extreme vigilance, one cannot always prevent or control what another person chooses. - 6 - It is not uncommon for the loved ones of a suicide victim to assume unwarranted culpability: “What if I had forced her to get help?” “What if I had visited more often?” “If only I hadn’t fought with him this morning;” “If only I hadn’t gone out for the evening.” For some, these “What-if” and “If-only” thoughts can become obsessive, and are often the most distressing hallmark of grief for the survivors of suicide. It is normal to replay scenes and conversations with loved ones during the grieving process, but when these self-blaming thoughts pervade, they can cause great harm. Professional help with managing these thought patterns can be a great aid in moving through one’s grief. It is especially important to remember that committing suicide is an individual decision. Accepting the free will of others, including their freedom to make a bad decision, can be very difficult. Although required to prevent tragedy insofar as one is reasonably able, and to be “Our brother’s keeper” when possible, it is not always possible to save loved ones from themselves. This is not a reflection upon one’s love and care for a person. No one can be held accountable for an event that was impossible to foresee. Even if some mistake was made, it is essential to remember that death was never the intent. Sometimes those who are planning suicide seem to feel better once they have decided upon a course of action, because they believe that they have an answer to their problems. This temporary lift in spirits can give those around them the impression that things have improved, even if the tendency toward suicide was known. Furthermore, because many people who suffer from depression and anxiety do not commit suicide, failing to anticipate that a loved one might decide upon another course of action is not surprising. Legitimate concerns about personal mistakes should be taken to a priest in the Sacrament of Reconciliation for absolution and for his objective view of the situation. For many survivors, the level of self-blame is disproportionate to any harm that they may have done. Self-punishment does not help the deceased, nor does it aid survivors. Rather, it can be a hindrance to healing and a possible trap of self-contempt and depression. To combat the - 7 - temptation to self-punish or to hold onto guilt, try to re-focus: help others through education in suicide prevention; reach out to those who may be suffering from suicidal thoughts, or to other survivors who are grieving; choose another issue and channel energies in a constructive manner. Our merciful and loving God does not desire one’s prolonged torment over a suicide or over any tragic event. He wants His children to be at peace. If reflecting upon this and other readings, talking to others, and taking everything to the Sacrament of Reconciliation have not eased the feelings of guilt, it is time to look for additional support. Many have found this support by meeting with a counselor individually, or along with other family members, or by becoming involved with a bereavement support group. Special bereavement groups exist for those dealing with the suicide of a loved one. There, group members will be familiar with the struggles particular to survivors of suicide. It is fine to begin by listening to others at group meetings, but eventually being able to share one’s personal experiences with those who truly understand can be a great relief and consolation.

    Important Church Writings… Official documents of the Catholic Church have evolved and differentiated over time, but commonly come from four basic sources: 1) Papal documents, issued directly by the Pope under his own name; 2) Church Council documents, issued by ecumenical councils of the Church and now promulgated under the Pope's name, taking the same form as common types of papal documents; and 3) Bishops documents, issued either by individual bishops or by national conferences of bishops. The types of each are briefly explained below. Not all types of documents are necessarily represented currently in this Bibliography. The level of magisterial authority pertaining to each type of document - particularly those of the Pope - is no longer always self- evident. A Church document may (and almost always does) contain statements of different levels of authority commanding different levels of assent, or even observations which do not require assent as such, but still should command the respect of the faithful. The Second Vatican Council, speaking through Lumen Gentium (The Dogmatic Constitution on the Church) identified as many as four different kinds of authority (n. 25). Those affirmations of the Second Vatican Council that recall truths of the faith naturally require the assent of theological faith, not because they were taught by this Council but because they have already been taught infallibly as such by the Church, either by a solemn judgment or by the ordinary and universal Magisterium. So also a full and definitive assent is required for the other doctrines set forth by the Second Vatican Council which have already been proposed by a previous definitive act of the Magisterium.

    ABSTRACT ONE MAN’S STRUGGLE: PIUS IX AND THE CHANGE IN PAPAL AUTHORITY IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY Andrew Paul Dinovo This thesis examines papal authority in the nineteenth century in three sections. The first examines papal issues within the world at large, specifically those that focus on the role of the Church within the political state. The second section concentrates on the authority of Pius IX on the Italian peninsula in the mid-nineteenth century. The third and final section of the thesis focuses on the inevitable loss of the Papal States within the context of the Vatican Council of 1869-1870. Select papal encyclicals from 1859 to 1871 and the official documents of the Vatican Council of 1869-1870 are examined in light of their relevance to the change in the nature of papal authority. Supplementing these changes is a variety of seminal secondary sources from noted papal scholars. Ultimately, this thesis reveals that this change in papal authority became a point of contention within the Church in the twentieth century. Your presence also was important, dear Metropolitan Archbishops, appointed in the past year. I have had the joy of conferring the sacred Pallium upon you, and today I am meeting you again. I greet you with deep affection, together with your relatives and friends, and I extend my thoughts to the communities entrusted to your pastoral care. 2. Your appreciated presence gives me the opportunity to reflect on the meaning of the ancient custom of the conferral of Palliums. Since the ninth century, the Archbishops appointed to Metropolitan Sees have received from the Pope a special liturgical emblem - the "Pallium" - as an attestation of communion with the Bishop of Rome. This emblem, which the Supreme Pontiff wears for all solemn celebrations and Metropolitans, on special occasions, consists of a narrow stole of white wool that is worn round the neck. Every year as many Palliums are made as there are new Metropolitan Archbishops. The Pope blesses them at the First Vespers on the Solemnity of Sts Peter and Paul.

We are deeply troubled about recent statements issued by the U.S. Catholic Conference of Bishops (USCCB) that focus almost singularly on the issue of abortion when speaking of President Joseph R. Biden. The USCCB has historically sought to engage with, dialogue with, and, when appropriate, critique civic leaders to address the root causes of suffering and improve institutional structures that contribute to suffering and injustice. Recent USCCB statements, however, do not embody this spirit of dialogue and engagement. We support your raising your voice to oppose the narrow and myopic focus of the USCCB on the single issue of abortion rather than the many other preeminent social justice and moral abuses in our country and world, including discrimination, racism, income inequality, environmental degradation, lack of access to quality health care, the continued use of the death penalty, and institutional injustice. Our Bishops should be following Pope Francis’ lead in calling on all of us to work with equal priority against a much broader range of abuses and challenges (see, e.g., Pope Francis’ Apostolic Exhortation, Gaudete et Exsultate, paras. 101-102). ​ ​ Please continue your leadership in speaking out for justice and the other values by which Jesus calls us to live.     Summary of Amoris Laetitia: On Love in the Family It is not by chance that Amoris Laetitia (AL), “The Joy of Love”, the post-synodal Apostolic Exhortation “on Love in the Family”, was signed on 19 March, the Solemnity of Saint Joseph. It brings together the results of the two Synods on the family convoked by Pope Francis in 2014 and 2015. It often cites their Final Reports; documents and teachings of his Predecessors; and his own numerous catecheses on the family. In addition, as in previous magisterial documents, the Pope also makes use of the contributions of various Episcopal Conferences around the world (Kenya, Australia, Argentina...) and cites significant figures such as Martin Luther King and Erich Fromm. The Pope even quotes the film Babette’s Feast to illustrate the concept of gratuity. Introduction (1-7) The Apostolic Exhortation is striking for its breadth and detail. Its 325 paragraphs are distributed over nine chapters. The seven introductory paragraphs plainly set out the complexity of a topic in urgent need of thorough study. The interventions of the Synod Fathers make up [form] a “multifaceted gem” (AL 4), a precious polyhedron, whose value must be preserved. But the Pope cautions that “not all discussions of doctrinal, moral or pastoral issues need to be settled by interventions of the magisterium”. Indeed, for some questions, “each country or region … can seek solutions better suited to its culture and sensitive to its traditions and local needs.     Ecclesiology of the Domestic Church: History & Implications A thesis submitted to the faculty of the Athenaeum of Ohio/Mount St. Mary’s Seminary of the West in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts (Theology) By Charisse D. Rubio Abstract This thesis will show that the Second Vatican Council set in motion new directions that enabled subsequent ecclesiology to regard the family as a Domestic Church. The Introduction provides normative definitions of key terms and an overview of the thesis. Chapter One briefly examines the history and theology of the Domestic Church before the Second Vatican Council from evidence in the New Testament, by patristic writings about marriage, and in magisterial teachings through the ages up to Vatican II. Chapter Two has three sections covering the development of the theology of the Domestic Church during and since the Second Vatican Council: two significant developments during Vatican II that had profound implications for family life as the Domestic Church, the ecclesiological insights that emerged out of the Council, and subsequent papal ecclesiological development. Chapter Three addresses the new ecclesiological directions for the Domestic Church in three sections: the status of the expression “Domestic Church,” the sacramentality of the Domestic Church, and the implications for parish and family ministry. The Conclusion highlights the most notable of these new directions and implications. The teachings of “Theology of the Body” are not covered in this thesis. ii This thesis by Charisse D.
