Trial of 2003-2003

Objective: To demonstrate and assess the habit and flowering performance of a range of Aquilegia grown from seed for garden decoration.

Entries: 96 entries were submitted in the trial including 16 mixtures submitted by various seed companies in the UK and worldwide.

Cultivation: Seed was sown in early June 2002 under glass into pans using modular compost (suitable for seed sowing and young ). (The A. vulgaris types were sown in the 3rd week April and then resown in mid May due to poor germination). The pans were covered with 2mm fine vermiculite, drenched with Revive at a concentration of 1ml/l [a soil treatment of natural micro organisms which suppresses soil borne diseases] and germinated at 20°C under mist. The seedlings were pricked out into modules, using modular compost, drenched with Revive and liquid fed at each watering with a 3:1:3 fertiliser at a concentration of 1:200. The plants were potted on into 1L pots (the Cameo Series into smaller 9cm pots) using a growing-on compost (similar to a multipurpose compost) and were placed outside for the summer. Whilst in trays/ pots the plants were drenched with an insecticide and regularly sprayed to control powdery mildew, initially using fungicidal protectants and then fungicidal eradicants as required. 20 plants of each single colour entry and 40 plants of each mixed colour entry were planted out on 08 October 2002 with 45 cm between plants and 45 cm between entries. The smaller entries such as Cameo Series and Fantasy Series were planted with 30 cm between plants and 30 cm between entries.

Records: A record was made of the date when 50% of an entry was flowering.

Judging: Members of the Floral Trials Sub-committee inspected the trial on 14 April, 14 May, 28 May, 05 June, and 17 June 2003 and recommended the Award of Garden Merit to 8 based on the following criteria:

habit : health : floriferousness : colour

Findings: The Floral Trials Subcommittee was delighted at the success of this trial and agreed it was the finest trial of its sort. The subject lent itself well to such a demonstration, being an early flowering , with good height and colour range.

It was recommended that the next Aquilegia trial should be held over three years so that it could be judged over two flowering seasons and perenniality could be established. It should also include more .

Nomenclature:

Establishing the correct names of the entries proved to be very difficult. Many of the cultivars and series are raised by one company and then introduced, often under different names, by one or several other companies over a short period. By establishing which names were published first, and considering the originator's intended names, we have resolved them as far as possible.

The Subcommittee were of the opinion that the low-growing Cameo Series and Fantasy Series (Aquilegia flabellata) did not perform at all well in the open ground on the trials field and probably were better suited for pot cultivation. Notes on names:

State Series (Swan Series) The raisers of this series, PanAmerican Seed, distribute it as Swan Series. However, their agents in the UK, Ball Colegrave, concede that the names provided under State Series have priority.

The equivalents are as follows:

Aquilegia 'Alaska' (State Series) : Aquilegia 'Swan White' (Swan Series) Aquilegia 'Florida' (State Series) : Aquilegia 'Swan Yellow' (Swan Series) Aquilegia 'Montana' (State Series) : Aquilegia 'Swan Rose and White' (Swan Series) Aquilegia 'Georgia' (State Series) : Aquilegia 'Swan Red and White' (Swan Series) Aquilegia 'Louisiana' (State Series) : Aquilegia 'Swan Burgundy and White' (Swan Series) Aquilegia 'Colorado' (State Series) : Aquilegia 'Swan Violet and White' (Swan Series) Aquilegia 'Virginia' (State Series) : Aquilegia 'Swan Blue and White' (Swan Series)

Origami Series (Butterfly Series) The names provided under Origami Series take precedence over those provided under Butterfly Series.

The equivalents are as follows:

Aquilegia 'Origami White' (Origami Series) : Aquilegia 'White Admiral' (Butterfly Series) Aquilegia 'Origami Yellow' (Origami Series) : Aquilegia 'Brimstone Yellow' (Butterfly Series) Aquilegia 'Origami Pink & White' (Origami Series) : Aquilegia 'Painted Lady' (Butterfly Series) Aquilegia 'Origami Rose and White' (Origami Series) : Aquilegia 'Crenis Rosa' (Butterfly Series) Aquilegia 'Origami Red and White' (Origami Series) : Aquilegia 'Red Admiral' (Butterfly Series) Aquilegia 'Origami Blue and White' (Origami Series) : Aquilegia 'Adonis Blue' (Butterfly Series)

Aquilegia vulgaris 'William Guiness' (syn. 'Magpie') The circumstances surrounding the origin of this cultivar are uncertain - it may have originated from the Irish garden of William Guinness or it may be of continental origin. Early publications of the name styled it with one n, perhaps to avoid conflict with a trademark. It is also offered under the later name of 'Magpie'.

Aquilegia vulgaris Vervaeneana Group Vervaeneana Group only includes forms of A. vulgaris with yellow variegated foliage, not those with yellow foliage.

Aquilegia vulgaris var. stellata 'Nora Barlow' misapplied The trials committee were of the opinion that material submitted as 'Nora Barlow' did not resemble the original cultivar. The original had flowers with equal parts rose-pink, white and green whereas material grown from seed nowadays has deeper red colouration with less white and green. As there is no published name to cover the modern version, it is styled here as a misapplied name.

Aquilegia vulgaris 'Roman Bronze' This is reputed to have originated as a cross between Aquilegia and Semiaquilegia, but the plant in the trial agreed with Aquilegia vulgaris.
