González, M. González et P. D. Sørensen, sp. nov. is described and illustrated. It is related to A. xalapensis H.B.K. and has been generally misidentified as A. glandulosa M. Martens & Galeotti, a synonym of the latter name. The new species is distinguished by having densely glandular pubescent branchlets and petioles; markedly bicolored leaves that are whitish to pale ochroleucous below due to a dense and uniform indument of tightly curled hairs, leaves red at senescence; and pink, rarely white flowers. -

Berkeley, California FOREWORD This cumulative index to Leaflets of Western Botany is based almost entirely on the published indexes of each of the ten volumes, those of volumes 1 to 7 having been compiled by me, and of volumes 8 to 10 by Anita Noldeke. Unfortunately, in the interest of economy, the earliest indexes are not as com- plete as I might wish, although such deficiencies as have been noted have been made up in the present work. Also included here are all plant names in various lists that were not indexed originally, such as those in Alice Eastwood's catalogue of plants on the Channel Islands (vol. 3, pages 55 to 76) and Jean M. Lindsdale's list of plants on the Hastings Reservation (vol. 7, pages 201 to 218). Besides the correction of certain errors in the volume indexes, we have made further corrections of original text spellings in this cumulative index, corrections that would have appeared in volume errata had they been detected in time. Such corrections in the present index are usually followed by the original misspelling in quotation marks. All names, whether accepted or synonymous, are given in regular (Roman) type, except for new names which are given in heavy (bold face) type. P. 56230 MÉXICO RESUMEN De acuerdo a la caracterización sinecológica de la vegetación en el área aledaña de El Salto, Durango. Se reportan ocho unidades de vegetación y mediante perfil semirrealista y danserogramas se describen las características fisonómicas de cada una, así como la lista florística, estableciendo su ordenación y clasificación numérica, mostrando que los gradientes latitudinales y topográficos influyen en la composición florística del área de estudio. PHYSIOGNOMIC CHARACTERIZATION AND ORDINATION OF THE VEGETATION IN EL SALTO, DURANGO, MEXICO SUMMARY According to a synecologic characterization of the vegetation in a near area to El Salto, Durango, Mexico, are reported eight vegetation units. This was done according to semi realistic profiles and Dansereau diagrams that describe the physiognomic characteristics of each unit. Also was elaborated a floristic list. The units were ordinated and classified numerically, showing that the latitudinal and topographic gradients influence the floristic composition across the study area. KEY WORDS: Durango region, soils, vegetation, forest. The California Botanical Society’s 28th Annual Graduate Student Symposium Friday – April 30 9:00 - 9:15 am Welcome and Schedule overview 9:15 - 10:00 am Session 1 : Pathogens and Invasives Eduardo Luis Cruz Attack of the Clones: Using transcriptomics to investigate the invasion success of Carpobrotus edulis Transcriptomics utilizes RNA sequences to get a snapshot of genetic expression. This is a powerful tool in non-model species lacking a reference genome. Thus, the application of comparative transcriptomics has the potential to help us elucidate the evolutionary mechanisms that facilitate species invasion. Carpobrotus edulis is an invasive stoloniferous succulent plant belonging to the Aizoaceae family native to South Africa. We leveraged the use of RNAseq to investigate evolutionary changes in the highly invasive species, constructing a de novo transcriptome and performing a differential expression analysis between native and invasive populations. Our goal was to determine what evolutionary changes have occurred between invasive and native populations that might help us explain its highly invasive behavior. RNA-seq data was gathered from experimental native and invasive populations tested under stress conditions and used to assemble a de novo transcriptome. Altogether, we provide the first annotated transcriptome for the plant genus Carpobrotus and the Aizoaceae family. A preliminary differential expression analysis identified several differentially expressed transcripts between native and invasive populations. GO enrichment revealed five categories significantly enriched in the native group; two categories were involved in flower development and three were involved in stress-related metabolic functions. Invasive populations showed no increases in these stress response categories and showed decreased expression in genes relating to protection and defense. -

Se hizo un estudio florístico de la porción guerrerense de la Sierra de Taxco, la cual incluye un área de 730 km2 y se ubica en los municipios de Tetipac, Pilcaya, Taxco de Alarcón, Ixcateopan de Cuauhtémoc y Pedro Ascencio Alquisiras. Se generó una base de datos que contiene 4 139 registros. Se citan 1 384 especies, 570 géneros y 150 familias de plantas vasculares, así como cinco tipos de vegetación principales: bosque tropical caducifolio, bosque de Quercus (incluyendo asociaciones con coníferas), bosque de coníferas, bosque mesófilo de montaña y bosque de galería. Las familias mas representativas son Asteraceae (209 especies y 79 géneros), Fabaceae (152 y 50) y Poaceae (80 y 39). The floristic study for the portion of the Sierra de Taxco in the state of Guerrero, Mexico was carried out, covering 730 km2 of the municipalities of Tetipac, Pilcaya, Taxco de Alarcon, Ixcateopan de Cuauhtémoc and Pedro Ascencio Alquisiras. A data base with 4 139 records was obtained. It includes 1 384 species and 570 genera in 150 families of vascular plants. Hoch TRIBES EPILOBIEAE, GONGYLOCARPEAE, AND ONAGREAE (ONAGRACEAE) IN NORTH AMERICA, BASED ON PARSIMONY ANALYSIS OF ENDEMICITY AND TRACK COMPATIBILITY ANALYSIS1 ABSTRACT Tribes Epilobieae, Gongylocarpeae, and Onagreae, a monophyletic branch in the family Onagraceae, comprise genera endemic to or having their major basal radiation in the Madrean Floristic Region of southwestern North America. Parsimony analysis of endemicity (PAE) and panbiogeography (track compatibility analysis) were performed in order to seek an historical explanation for the patterns of high diversity and endemicity for the group in this region. Twenty- one areas of endemism are delimited, based on previous biogeographic schemes and presence of endemic plant and animal taxa. Based on distributional data on 173 species, a strict consensus PAE cladogram shows four main groups of areas: northern North America, the central Mexican areas, western North America, and eastern North America. Track compatibility analysis resulted in two strongly supported generalized tracks: one includes eastern North America, and the other western North America. PAE and panbiogeographical analyses of the distributional patterns of these taxa suggest a close relationship of eastern and western North America, with both areas more related to the Neotropics than to the Palearctic, and a rather weak association between northern North America and Asia. The discovery of two tracks in eastern and western North America for Epilobieae, Gongylocarpeae, and Onagreae reveal little relationship of North America with Asia or other continents. These tribes display a distinct but contemporaneous biogeographical history that differs from those of the Holarctic.
