Abstract: Riparian flora is an expressed survey to analyze marginal vegetation of river zones. The present study was conducted in Thamiraparani river of Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu, India. Result of the current study showed a total of, 720 species of angiosperms belonging to 449 genera under 126 families of these 76.5% were dicots and 23.5% of monocots were recorded.Habitually 30.4% herbs , 26.7% trees, 15.7% shrubs, 6.9% climbing shrubs, 5.2% perennial herbs, 3.3% annual herbs, 2 % twining herbs, 1.7% twining shrubs, 1.6% aquatic herbs, 1.3% climbing herbs, 0.6% rhizomatous herbs, 0.7% marshy herbs, 0.7% tunerous herbs, 0.6% lianas, 0.4% tuberous climbing herbs, 0.4% stragglinbg shrubs, 0.3% climbers, 0.3% climbing palms, 0.3% prostrate herbs, climbing shrub, creeping herb, epiphytic herb, parasitic shrub and parasitic twining herb were 0.1% . -

I agree that library of the University of Dublin, Trinity College may lend or copy this thesis subject to the source being acknowledged. _______________________ Atchara Teerawatananon II Abstract This thesis has provided a comprehensive taxonomic account of tribe Arundinelleae, and subtribes Chionachninae, Dimeriinae and Germainiinae of the tribe Andropogoneae in Thailand. Complete floristic treatments of these taxa have been completed for the Flora of Thailand project. Keys to genera and species, species descriptions, synonyms, typifications, illustrations, distribution maps and lists of specimens examined, are also presented. Fourteen species and three genera of tribe Arundinelleae, three species and two genera of subtribe Chionachninae, seven species of subtribe Dimeriinae, and twelve species and two genera of Germainiinae, were recorded in Thailand, of which Garnotia ciliata and Jansenella griffithiana were recorded for the first time for Thailand. Three endemic grasses, Arundinella kerrii, A. kokutensis and Dimeria kerrii were described as new species to science. Phylogenetic relationships among major subfamilies in Poaceae and among major tribes within Panicoideae were evaluated using parsimony analysis of plastid DNA regions, trnL-F and atpB- rbcL, and a nuclear ribosomal DNA region, ITS. -

Shrestha Central Department of Botany, Tribhuvan University, Kirtipur, Kathmandu, Nepal; *Corresponding author, email: [email protected] Abstract About 170 species of Commelina are known from tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Nepal contributes 6 species of Commelina to the world flora. In the present work, taxonomy of all the six species of Commelina reported from Nepal (C. benghalensis, C. caroliniana, C. diffusa, C. maculata, C. paludosa and C. suffruticosa) was studied. Voucher specimens were collected from Central and Eastern Nepal, covering 14 districts. Morphological characters were studied from these collections. Palynological and anatomical characters were also used to see if they are taxonomically important to delimit the taxa within Commelina. Morphological characters seemed promising to delimit the taxa within Commelina. The key identifying characters at species level are modification in root, form of spathe, structure of leaves and seeds, shape of stomata and pollen. Palynological and anatomical characters were also useful, to some extent, in separating some species, but were not significant as compared to morphological data. Some specimens, close to C. benghalensis and C. caroliniana, showed very different characters. Thus further study is needed to confirm their taxonomic status. Nimar region cover four districts of Madhya Pradesh namely West Nimar (Khargone), East Nimar (Khandwa), Burhanpur and Barwani and this is well known for BT cotton cultivation. Vindhyan scab is occupying in the Northern part and major part of southern Nimar region is covered by Satpura hill ranges. Present work is an outcome of three years and surveyed during 2010 to 2013 by well planned schedule. Present study reported 18 flowering plants which are new records for the flora of Madhya Pradesh. These are Acalypha lanceolata Willd. Ammania fimbriata Wt., Amberaboa ramosa (Roxb.) Jafri, Cleome burmanni Wight, Clerodendrum calamitosum L., Eriocaulon minutum Hook. f., Indigofera duthei Drum ex Naik, Desmodium scorpiurus (Sw.) Desv. Dichanthium faveolatum (Del.) Roberty, Mimosa rubicaulis Lam., Tephrosia leptostachya DC, Teprosia hamiltonii J. R. Drumm ex Gamble, Sporobolus piliferus (Trin.) Kuntze, Fimbristylis cymosa R. Br., Lagenaria leucantha (Duch.) Rusby, Pedalium murex L., Berlaria acanthoides Vahl., Impatiens lucida Heyne ex Hook. F and Lophopogon tridentus (Roxb.) Hack. have been reported as new records for Madhya Pradesh, India. TAMURA Department of Botany, Graduate School of Science, Kyoto University, Kitashirakawa-oiwake-cho, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto 606-8502, Japan. *[email protected] (author for correspondence) Commelina, the pantropical and largest genus in Commelinaceae, consists of ca. 205 species with char- acteristic conduplicate involucral bracts. Previous phylogenetic studies of Commelina, which mainly used African and North American species, suggested that the ancestral character state of the margins of the involucral bracts of Commelina was free and that free to fused occurred only once. To test this evo- lutionary scenario, we performed parsimony and likelihood analyses with partial matK sequences using 25 individuals from 11 species of Commelina, primarily from eastern and southeastern Asia, with An- eilema and Pollia as outgroups. Results showed that Commelina comprises two major clades, one con- sisting of four species, and the other consisting of seven species. Species with free margins of the invo- lucral bracts were in both major clades: C. suffruticosa in the first clade and C. coelestis, C. communis, C. diffusa, C. purpurea and C. sikkimensis in the latter. The phylogenetic trees suggested that the number of shifts is fewer when the ancestral state was fused and that there were two parallel evolutionary trends toward free.
