MICHAELS · MARYLAND · 21663-0636 · 410/745-2916 Dear Educator, The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum has developed these Explorations in conjunction with a new permanent exhibition, Oystering on the Chesapeake. Both the exhibition and these activities explore the following themes: • The Chesapeake Bay was once the greatest oyster factory on earth and oystering has shaped the lives of watermen, their families and communities, and the Bay as a whole. • The onboard experience of the captains and crews of the Chesapeake’s oyster harvesting boats • The people and processes responsible for bringing the oysters from the Bay to the dinner table • The story of the Chesapeake oyster fishery is one of great successes and fortunes but also is a story of conflict over resources and resource exploitation. • The devastation of the oyster fishery is due to many interrelated factors and we are all responsible. These Explorations are designed to introduce students in grades 4,5, and 6 to the themes covered by the exhibition and can be used in preparation for a museum visit or as a stand-alone classroom resource. Ten separate Explorations examine different topics related to oystering. You may choose to complete the Explorations that best suit your students’ needs and abilities. In addition, you can complete them in any order that works best for you. See the next page for a quick overview of the Explorations. Each Exploration is structured as follows: Overview Page Designed to help you present the Exploration to your class, this page is divided into these sections: • Overview: A brief description of the Exploration • Skills: Specific skills your students will sharpen by completing the Exploration • You Will Need: Materials and approximate time needed to complete the Exploration. • Teacher’s Notes: Suggestions on how best to proceed through the Exploration. • Vocabulary: Words or usage of words that may be unfamiliar to your students. You may wish to review these words with your students and have them use the new words in a sentence as you begin the Exploration. • Additional Resources: Additional sources of classroom or background materials. 1 Discover It! Page This page begins with a quote from a person in the oyster industry or from literature. You may wish to discuss the quote with your students before they begin the Exploration and help them to determine what the quote tells them about oysters or oystering. The quote is fol- lowed by a brief reading section that contains information related to the Exploration topic. We recommend that you make a copy of Discover It! for each of your students. Teacher’s Notes (described above) will give you suggestions on how to use the reading material for each Exploration. Explore It! Page This is the students’ activity page for the Exploration. It begins with a question at the top of the page that your students should be able to answer after completing the activity. The activ- ity is designed in easy-to-follow steps and instructions. The page ends with suggestions for activities to engage your students outside of the classroom and Bet you didn’t know…. - a fun or unusual fact relating to oysters or oystering. We recommend that you make a copy of the Explore It! page for each of your students. Exploration Cards Many of the Explorations include original resources such as primary documents or historic images for the students to use in completing the activity. These have been provided on card- stock pages following the associated Exploration. They can be removed and handed out to student groups or placed at stations around the classroom. In some cases you may want to make copies of the cards for each student, however, please be aware that copies may not clearly show important details in the historic images or documents. We hope that you will use these Explorations and the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum as a classroom resource. There were lots of speed bumps in the road but here I am once again with a number of nice decoys to fit every pocketbook thanks to a lot of help from family, some very good friends and loyal consignors. Due to health problems I was unable to attend the Mid-West Decoy Collector’s Show for the first time in 40 years. Thanks to Bill LaPointe and Jim King for attending the show for me and exhibiting the decoys. There is absolutely no way I could have pulled this together without family and friends. If I may use a baseball analogy, it really came down to the last of the ninth, two outs and the count at three and two before we managed to scratch out a hit and round out the offerings.

    Bugeye SOLOMONS SCHOOL BOAT - Almost Forgotten - In 1925 the elementary schools of lower Calvert County were consolidated into one school at Solomons. This meant transporting children who lived along the several creeks dissecting the Solomons area.     _______________________________________ FINAL ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT CHESAPEAKE BAY OYSTER RECOVERY, PIANKATANK RIVER, VIRGINIA _______________________________________ Prepared by: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Norfolk District Planning and Policy Branch Environmental Analysis March 2016 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The purpose of this document is to analyze the environmental impacts of the project identified as Chesapeake Bay Oyster Recovery, Piankatank River, Virginia. This restoration project is located in the lower Piankatank River at its confluence with the Chesapeake Bay. As a component of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Chesapeake Bay Oyster Restoration program, this project is authorized by Section 704(b) of the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) of 1986, as amended. The ultimate goal of the program is to restore abundant, self-sustaining oyster populations in the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. The objective of this project is to construct new reef habitat and rehabilitate existing reef habitat in the Piankatank River to closely resemble natural conditions, in terms of structure and function, in a technically and economically sound manner. The project area is located in Middlesex and Mathews counties at the mouth of the Piankatank River where it discharges into the Chesapeake Bay proper. The Piankatank River is a medium-sized river located south of the Rappahannock River and north of the York River in the Middle Peninsula region of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The entire project area occurs on subaqueous land owned by the Commonwealth of Virginia and managed by the Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC).     •FICTION The One Thing I’ll Say about North Florida JACOB WHITE We got drunk and went oystering. Went oystering, got drunk. Drank moon- shine. Not everyone. I didn’t get drunk. No one got drunk. But “We went oystering and got tore up” is how Zeke will tell it at the roast and how we need it told. I don’t know any of these people. My new landlord Zeke invited me. Tough dude with two teens and a ponytail, but he’s afraid to charge us rent. He is kind to me, compulsively kind. It does not occur at first that he likes me. I am new to casual friendships with mature men. I mean, I have had mature men friends, friends upwards of fifty—seventy-seven, once—but there has always been the implied deference, the gentle implication that they are doing the world’s work and I am not, that they are humoring me, that the complicated blotching of their skin and the ruminative pauses before they drop in a serviceable word are beyond my ken, which they are, because somehow, at thirty-two, grown men are still otherworldly to me. It’s my wife Holly who encouraged me to accept the oystering invite. It’s four A.M. in our complex and Zeke is tapping our bedroom window with a Maglite. “Go on,” Holly says with mothery sleep-rasp and, and then I’m out in the dark winter morning, milling in Zeke’s driveway next door, toeing gravel with the others who’ve shown up in the February dark in jeeps and proper swamp boots, all of us loading up pails, cross-peen hammers, thermoses.
