    Renormalizing individual performance metrics for cultural heritage management of sports records Alexander M. Petersen1 and Orion Penner2 1Management of Complex Systems Department, Ernest and Julio Gallo Management Program, School of Engineering, University of California, Merced, CA 95343 2Chair of Innovation and Intellectual Property Policy, College of Management of Technology, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland. (Dated: April 21, 2020) Individual performance metrics are commonly used to compare players from different eras. However, such cross-era comparison is often biased due to significant changes in success factors underlying player achievement rates (e.g. performance enhancing drugs and modern training regimens). Such historical comparison is more than fodder for casual discussion among sports fans, as it is also an issue of critical importance to the multi- billion dollar professional sport industry and the institutions (e.g. Hall of Fame) charged with preserving sports history and the legacy of outstanding players and achievements. To address this cultural heritage management issue, we report an objective statistical method for renormalizing career achievement metrics, one that is par- ticularly tailored for common seasonal performance metrics, which are often aggregated into summary career metrics – despite the fact that many player careers span different eras. Remarkably, we find that the method applied to comprehensive Major League Baseball and National Basketball Association player data preserves the overall functional form of the distribution of career achievement, both at the season and career level. As such, subsequent re-ranking of the top-50 all-time records in MLB and the NBA using renormalized metrics indicates reordering at the local rank level, as opposed to bulk reordering by era.

Missouri State finished the season 22-11, as Alford had guided the Steve Alford begins his first season as UCLA’s head coach in 2013-14, Bears to their second 20-plus win season in three years. Prior to Alford’s having compiled a 463-235 record (.663) in 22 seasons as a collegiate arrival in the fall of 1995, Missouri State had not advanced to the NCAA head coach. In recent years, Rice has proven himself as a business owner and promoter through his company G-Force Fights, based in Miami, Florida. Glen Rice Celebrity Golf Tournament benefiting the construction of our Children’s Crisis Center Community Health of South Florida, Inc. (CHI) has a new goal in mind: to build the first comprehensive Children’s Crisis Center in southern Miami-Dade County. This in-patient, 24-hour facility is designed to treat the more than 1,000 children in South Florida who are voluntarily brought in by their parents or who are Baker Acted at CHI’s adult crisis center due to the risk of harming themselves or others. Unfortunately, CHI’s current adult crisis unit is not equipped to treat children, so those kids endure a lengthy intake and transfer process as too often there are no available beds at other facilities.

Caroline. Gola Family. And friends. A wise person once said that “Gratitude is the memory of the heart.” Well, every single person in this church today is so very thankful for one singular life, with lots and lots of memories of a man who touched countless lives and countless hearts. Tom, you were a man of strength, tempered with an unassuming personality and blessed with a touch of humility. A man of great accomplishment, but so very approachable. Winston Churchill once stated that we make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. Today, we remember you as a man who gave….and gave….and kept giving. And you gave the utmost respect and assistance to everyone… To your classmates and teammates both at La Salle High School and at La Salle College To your Army buddies To your teammates on the Philadelphia Warriors and the New York Knicks To your Explorer players and fans of the Blue and Gold at old Convention Hall and at the Palestra, and even—if anyone can remember—that old creaky court in Wister Hall. To your colleagues at City Hall and in Harrisburg, and countless constituents. Tom, you were a real “people-person.” If one word comes close to summarizing your 81 years, it might be the word genuine.
