  • Periodically Spaced Anticlines of the Columbia Plateau
Geological Society of America Special Paper 239 1989 Periodically spaced anticlines of the Columbia Plateau Thomas R. Watters Center for Earth and Planetary Studies, National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D. C. 20560 ABSTRACT Deformation of the continental flood-basalt in the westernmost portion of the Columbia Plateau has resulted in regularly spaced anticlinal ridges. The periodic nature of the anticlines is characterized by dividing the Yakima fold belt into three domains on the basis of spacings and orientations: (1) the northern domain, made up of the eastern segments of Umtanum Ridge, the Saddle Mountains, and the Frenchman Hills; (2) the central domain, made up of segments of Rattlesnake Ridge, the eastern segments of Horse Heaven Hills, Yakima Ridge, the western segments of Umtanum Ridge, Cleman Mountain, Bethel Ridge, and Manastash Ridge; and (3) the southern domain, made up of Gordon Ridge, the Columbia Hills, the western segment of Horse Heaven Hills, Toppenish Ridge, and Ahtanum Ridge. The northern, central, and southern domains have mean spacings of 19.6,11.6, and 27.6 km, respectively, with a total range of 4 to 36 km and a mean of 20.4 km (n = 203). The basalts are modeled as a multilayer of thin linear elastic plates with frictionless contacts, resting on a mechanically weak elastic substrate of finite thickness, that has buckled at a critical wavelength of folding. Free slip between layers is assumed, based on the presence of thin sedimentary interbeds in the Grande Ronde Basalt separating groups of flows with an average thickness of roughly 280 m.

Mount Adams (elevation: 12,276 ft; 3,742 m) is centered 50 km west and 2.8 km higher than foreground meadow (elevation: 2,950 ft.; 900 m); its eruptions began ~520 ka, its upper cone was built in late Pleistocene, and several eruptions have taken place in the Holocene. Signal Peak (elevation: 5,100 ft; 1,555 m), 20 km west of camera, is one of largest and highest eruptive centers in Simcoe Mountains volcanic field; short-lived shield, built around 3.7 Ma, is seven times older than Mount Adams. 2015 U.S. Department of the Interior U.S. Geological Survey Contents Introductory Overview for Non-Geologists ...............................................................................................1 Introduction.....................................................................................................................................................2 Physiography, Environment, Boundary Surveys, and Access ......................................................6 Previous Geologic

  • 5 Up-And-Coming California Wine Regions on Our Radar
5 up-and-coming California wine regions on our radar Bob Ecker, Special for USA TODAY 1:01 p.m. EST December 12, 2013 When we think of American wine, we think of the state of California. After all, over 90% of wine produced in this country comes from the Golden State. Bob Ecker When we think of American wine, we think of the state of California. After all, over 90% of wine produced in this country comes from the Golden State. Famous wine regions like Napa Valley, Sonoma and Santa Barbara County are wildly popular for travelers, but a number of up-and- coming California wine regions are producing stellar grapes – and wines worth seeking out. Below are some of the up and comers that should be on your California wine radar. Lake County Bordered by the famous wine regions of Napa (and Mt. St. Helena) directly south, Sonoma to the southwest and Mendocino to the west, Lake County today produces quite a few fine wines in its own right. Carved out of Napa County in 1861, the area combines a few small towns, a hardy landscape, relatively high elevations, pear orchards and a multitude of vineyards. Visitors will be pleased to find high-quality wines (from approximately 35 wineries) without crowds, traffic or high prices. Vintners in Lake County have learned that their volcanic soils, hot days and mild nights, elevation, cool breezes from the Pacific and a strong will to produce high-quality wines are helping their region prosper. Big wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Petite Sirah do well here as well as delicious Sauvignon Blancs.

  • The Big Bottom (Lewis County) 1833-1933
THE BIG BOTTOM (LEWIS COUNTY) 1833-1933 An important desideratum of Washington's first white settle ment at Tumwater, was a direct route across the Cascade Range to The Dalles. In the spring of 1854, two Tumwater pioneers set out on an exploring expedition to locate a low pass to connect Puget Sound with the Oregon Trail. Their names have since become emblazoned in Washington's hall of fame : James Longmire, discoverer of the springs in Rainier National Park now bearing his name; and William Packwood, for whom a postoffice, lake and mountain saddle in eastern Lewis Coun- . ty have been named. Led by a trio of Nisqually Indian guides, the pioneer pair skirted the stream known as Skate Creek southward from Mount Rainier, and came out upon a huge bottomland bisected by the up per Cowlitz River. At that time, according to the statement of Jim Yoak, aged patriarch of the Cowlitz tribe, I."ongmire and Packwood found a thriving Indian village on the banks of the river, with several hun dred members of the Cowlitz tribe living there. The two trail-blazers returned to Tumwater with the word that they had discovered the long-hoped-for low pass to The Dalles. A subsequent trip of course proved this belief was erroneous, for the summit was still many miles to the eastward. Even to this day, man has not pierced White Pass with a road; but this will soon become an actuality. Although failing in their original purpose, Longmire and Pack wood did not make that exploring trip in vain, for they were the first white men to glimpse the "Big Bottom" country.

Bull Trout Final Critical Habitat Justification: Rationale for Why Habitat is Essential, and Documentation of Occupancy Chapter 11. Mid-Columbia Recovery Unit Yakima River Basin Critical Habitat Unit 353 Bull Trout Final Critical Habitat Justification Chapter 11 U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service September 2010 Chapter 11. Yakima River Basin Critical Habitat Unit The Yakima River CHU supports adfluvial, fluvial, and resident life history forms of bull trout. This CHU includes the mainstem Yakima River and tributaries from its confluence with the Columbia River upstream from the mouth of the Columbia River upstream to its headwaters at the crest of the Cascade Range. The Yakima River CHU is located on the eastern slopes of the Cascade Range in south-central Washington and encompasses the entire Yakima River basin located between the Klickitat and Wenatchee Basins. The Yakima River basin is one of the largest basins in the state of Washington; it drains southeast into the Columbia River near the town of Richland, Washington. The basin occupies most of Yakima and Kittitas Counties, about half of Benton County, and a small portion of Klickitat County. This CHU does not contain any subunits because it supports one core area. A total of 1,177.2 km (731.5 mi) of stream habitat and 6,285.2 ha (15,531.0 ac) of lake and reservoir surface area in this CHU are proposed as critical habitat. One of the largest populations of bull trout (South Fork Tieton River population) in central Washington is located above the Tieton Dam and supports the core area.
