ASSOCIATION FOR THE PROMOTION OF THE ROLE OF LEMNOS ISLAND IN THE WW1 The Association “The Lemnos' Friends of ANZAC” is established to highlight the role that Lemnos island has played during the WW1, and especially during the Gallipoli Campaign. It’ s an Association, established by Lemnians or people who love the island and in General . The Centenary Commemoration of the Gallipoli Campaign provided an important opportunity to all of us, to reflect upon and learn from our common history. The Gallipoli Campaign remains to this day, a testament of courage, bravery and self-sacrifice on all sides of the conflict. It is a historic event, that has shaped our national identities, that has forged unbreakable bonds of friendship. Through a number of commemorative events and cultural activities before, after and throughout the Commemorative year, the people of Lemnos will honor the service and sacrifice of the men and women who served at the Campaign, but also pay tribute and recognize the significant contribution of their own forebears. With our help, we try to teach the new generation of this great historical moment, and show the important role of Lemnos in this global historical moment

On the occasion of the Centenary of the Gallipoli Campaign in 2015, we had invited to an event organized by the Association “Lemnos' Friends of ANZAC”, in collaboration with the Hellenic-Australian Business Council, Ambassadors and Military attachees from 10 countries , Ministers, Deputy Ministers , Congressmen and representatives of all Greek political parties. Main issue for this invitation was the presentation of the Association's objectives as well as the commemorative events and cultural activities taking place in HE The Ambassador of Australia Mr John Griffin Lemnos during the Commemoration Year. Graeme Mitchell from Australia found in his home the diaries of an ANZAC Nurse, Anne Donnell, which now are important part of Australian wartime history and a great story for 9Channel. Also great story to prove the real connection between this moment of the WW1 History with Lemnos and Greece. The shootings were on the spot where the 3AGH was. All spots found with the great help of Mr Manolis Ioannidis, member of our Association Reach of 686,000 viewers

9 LEMNOS LYCEUM PERFORMANCE ,UNIVERSITY OF 2015 NSW, 7 MARCH 2015

The Sydney Lyceum, invited and we supported International Lyceum groups from Lemnos and from Kavala with local musicians in a great performance which was attended by more than 700 people. At the University to New South Wales ,Australia

11 “THE HEALING LAND OF LEMNOS” – A HYMN TO PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP OF THE WORLD This great piece of art, presented by the Greek-Lemnian painter Andreas Kontellis, as a contribution to the continuous efforts to make Greece the land of Peace and healing –as Lemnos was for the ENTENTE army on 1915. Mr Andreas Kontellis is a major member of our Association and only 20 pcs of this fine art, was given as presents to the official participants in the commemorative events on the island

“The Lemnos’ Friends of ANZAC” Association International Conference for the Gallipoli Campaign, title: ¨The First World War in the Mediterranean – ANZAC and the role of Lemnos”

For the first time, so systematically in Greece, an international conference took place at Varos Village Hotel Lemnos, to highlight the role of the island in the Battle of Gallipoli, organized by "The Lemnos’ Friends of ANZAC “ Association ( June 26th-28th, 2015)

Primarily investigated in detail, the political and military components of the notorious Gallipoli campaign, which held a significant extent developments in Thracian and Asia Minor battlefield and is ( for many reasons, both good and bad) a high valued historical fact. As noted in the conference, the Gallipoli Campaign, as a historical event took place to provide from its allies, "Entente", aid to Russia so as not to isolate the Black Sea and the Allied defeat and held the future of Istanbul. Particular attention was paid to the causes that led to the defeat of the Allies with very interesting approaches from professors of maritime history and other specialists of the Australia, US, France, Britain, Turkey and Greece.

The Battle of Gallipoli rose the star of Mustafa Kemal, the future founder of the Turkish Republic, whose military tactics characterized aggressive. And on….

44 The International Conference of June 2015 ,was a very big step ahead, for the recognition globally of the role of Lemnos in the Gallipoli Campaign, the ANZAC and the modern history of many countries globally . Among these countries, is Greece…

In the centenary of the armistice of Mudros , 2018, we will invite representatives of 88

countries!!!!! 45 The first day of the Conference, announced by Dr. Lita Tzortzopoulou-Gregory of the Archaeological Institute of Sydney, an international invitation to make an international survey on the island of Lemnos . The results of this survey, in cooperation with many institutions around the world, will help us to put Lemnos, and Greece in general in the right position in the modern history of the world
