Creta Maris Conducts Its Annual Evacuation Drill
PRESS RELEASE September 2019 Creta Maris Conducts its Annual Evacuation Drill Active participation of the Fire Department, the Police Department, the Cretan Medical Center and the Local Authorities Creta Maris Beach Resort held an Evacuation Drill for the eighth consecutive year within its facilities, in Hersonissos on the island of Crete. The drill was part of Creta Maris’ annual action “Crisis Management as a result of a natural phenomenon” and was attended by the Greek Deputy Minister of Culture and Sports, Mr. Lefteris Avgenakis; the Ambassador of Denmark in Greece, Mr. Klavs A. Holm; the General Secretary of Civil Protection, Mr. Nikos Chardalias; the Vice Consul of Great Britain in Crete, Mrs. Aristea Chourdaki; and the CEO of Metaxa Hospitality Group and Consul of the four Scandinavian countries in Eastern Crete, Mr. Andreas Metaxas. This year's exercise scenario included the implementation of the "Crisis Management Policy" in case of an earthquake, thus, aiming the maintenance of the high level of preparedness and the expansion of the resort’s specialized emergency team’s know-how. The participation of all major rescue teams, such as the Fire Department, the Hellenic Police Force and the Cretan Medical Center, aimed at the smooth and coordinated collaboration with Creta Maris staff to ensure the safe transition of all the resort’s guests in a protected area. -

Box. 2229, 71307 Iraklio, Greece b Municipal Enterprise for Water Supply and Sewerage of Iraklio, 71202 Iraklio, Greece Accepted 17 September 2003 Abstract In Crete, Greece despite having adequate atmospheric precipitation, water imbalance is often expe- rienced, because of temporal and spatial variations in the precipitation, an increase in water demand during summer months and the difficulty of transporting water due to the mountainous terrain. Crete can be regarded as a representative mediterranean region with a relatively high potential for wastewa- ter recycling and reuse. Preliminary estimates show that the implementation of wastewater recycling and reuse plans would lead to water savings of up to 5% of the total irrigation water. The basic aim of this paper is to present views on integrated water resources management in Crete, Greece including the potential for the recycling and reuse of treated wastewater. A preliminary inventory, distribution and mapping of wastewater treatment systems in Crete is also presented. Furthermore, the quality of treated effluents, disposal sites, irrigated areas, and environmental, social, economical, and agronom- ical impacts are considered. Finally, quality criteria for reuse of treated wastewater in Greece and maybe for other mediterranean countries are proposed. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Under average meteorological conditions, the island is water-sufficient (969 mm precipitation; theoretical water potential 3284 hm3; and total water use 610 hm3). Agriculture is by far the greatest user of water (78% of total water use), followed by domestic use (21%). Despite the high average water availability, water scarcity events commonly occur, particularly in the eastern-south part of the island, driven by local climatic conditions and seasonal or geographical mismatches between water availability and demand. -

Consistency and rupture in punishments in Crete under the Venetian rule (13th - 17th century)∗ Romina N. Tsakiri∗∗ Venice tried to exercise its power in an absolute way in the political government of its dominions, where the public interest and the interests of the state took priority. Its wish to create a uniformity in its dominions was manifested in the public law and mainly in penal law. The penal law of the dominant city, where the provisions of Doge Jacopo Tiepolo from 1242 (the so called statuti commune Veneciarum) were prominent, with clarifications, corrections and additions over the centuries, was established slowly but steadily as the basic law in the function of justice of the subjugated cities. There followed a verdict “by analogy” with other similar cases (analogia), or by custom (i.e. every memory of written or common law) (consuetudine) and the discretion and will of the judge (arbitrium). In its effort to gradually impose the Venetian law, the decision of Venice to grant a certain degree of autonomy to its dominions and respect the local law, where it existed, and the customs of the dominions is indisputable. However, Venice always maintained the right to interfere and amend the law according to the requests of the subjects and, primarily, according to its interests. Besides, the authorities of Venice often issued laws, either applicable to all the dominions or individually for each dominion (often by the local Venetian administration), according to a given situation. Therefore, these laws could often be repealed or adapted to the needs of the metropolis and applied for the security and stability of the state and defending the financial interests of the Venetian state and the nobility (Cessi 1938. -

1 The following information has been supplied by the Greek Aliens Bureau: It is obligatory for all EU nationals to apply for a “Registration Certificate” (Veveosi Engrafis - Βεβαίωση Εγγραφής) after they have spent 3 months in Greece (Directive 2004/38/EC).This requirement also applies to UK nationals during the transition period. This certificate is open- dated. You only need to renew it if your circumstances change e.g. if you had registered as unemployed and you have now found employment. Below we outline some of the required documents for the most common cases. Please refer to the local Police Authorities for information on the regulations for freelancers, domestic employment and students. You should submit your application and required documents at your local Aliens Police (Tmima Allodapon – Τμήμα Αλλοδαπών, for addresses, contact telephone and opening hours see end); if you live outside Athens go to the local police station closest to your residence. In all cases, original documents and photocopies are required. You should approach the Greek Authorities for detailed information on the documents required or further clarification. Please note that some authorities work by appointment and will request that you book an appointment in advance. Required documents in the case of a working person: 1. Valid passport. 2. Two (2) photos. 3. Applicant’s proof of address [a document containing both the applicant’s name and address e.g. photocopy of the house lease, public utility bill (DEH, OTE, EYDAP) or statement from Tax Office (Tax Return)]. Crete was once the center of the Minoan civilization (c. 2700–1420 BC), regarded as the earliest recorded civilization in Europe. In addition to birding, we will explore several famous archeological sites, including Knossos and ancient Phaistos, the most important centers of Minoan times. Crete’s landscape is very special: defined by high mountain ranges, deep valleys, fertile plateaus, and caves (including the mythological birthplace of the ancient Greek god, Zeus) Rivers have cut deep, exceptionally beautiful gorges that create a rich presence of geological wealth and have been explored for their aromatic and medicinal plants since Minoan times. Populations of choughs, Griffon Vultures, Lammergeiers, and swifts nest on the steep cliffs. A fantastic variety of birds and plants are found on Crete: not only its resident bird species, which are numerous and include rare and endangered birds, but also the migrants who stop over on Crete during their journeys to and from Africa and Europe. The isolation of Crete from mainland Europe, Asia, and Africa is reflected in the diversity of habitats, flora, and avifauna. The richness of the surroundings results in an impressive bird species list and often unexpected surprises. For example, last year a Blue- cheeked Bee-eater, usually only seen in northern Africa and the Middle East, was spotted. Join us for this unusual and very special trip. -
