Florentinische Tragödie, and the double concert of Giovanna d’Arco and Stabat Mater at the Arriaga Theatre.

A new season in which ten singers, three stage directors and three music directors make their debut with Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonikoa, Euskadiko Orkestra, Orquesta Sinfónica Verum, Orquesta Bilbao Sinfonietta and the Opera Choir of Bilbao, conducted by Boris Dujin, in charge of the choral part of the season.

ABAO has a reputation as an institution with great voices and brings outstanding performers who have succeeded in the major opera houses of the world, such as Michael Fabiano, Jessica Pratt, Elena Zhidkova, Jorge de León, Ekaterina Semenchuck, Ambrogio Maestri, Daniela Barcellona, Ainhoa Arteta, Angela Meade, Sergio Escobar or Juan Jesús Rodríguez, amongst others.

The BBVA Foundation, whose distinguishing feature is the promotion of scientific knowledge and cultural creation, collaborates with ABAO Bilbao Opera as the season’s main sponsor.

Jacques Offenbach LES CONTES D’HOFFMANN 23, 26, 29 October and 1 November 2021

• In the leading roles Jessica Pratt, Michael Fabiano, Elena Zhidkova and Simón Orfila • Staging the national premiere of a hypnotic, impressive and truly expressive production by Vincent Huguet. • In the pit, the renowned orchestra conductor Carlo Montanaro leading the Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonikoa in a fast-paced score. • Sponsored by BBVA Foundation.

Offenbach’s unfinished masterpiece, Les contes d’Hoffmann, opens the season after two decades of absence in ABAO Bilbao Opera, sponsored by BBVA Foundation.

It is based on the three stories by the romantic poet E.T.A. Hoffmann, who, in love with the singer Stella, embarks on a search for this ideal woman through the women he has known and loved: Olympia, a doll, Antonia, a young woman who gets ill when she sings, and Giulietta, a courtesan, and together they all form one: his beloved one.

Jessica Pratt starts the season with a real tour de force by playing the four leading soprano roles: Olympia, Antonia, Giulietta and Stella, a major landmark in her successful career. Solving the equation of the four female roles, the specific personality of each of the heroines, their expression, as well as all the lyrical and dramatic imperatives involved, represents a considerable challenge for the talent and the voice of the English soprano.

Michel Fabiano plays the troubled Hoffmann in an exhausting role that requires all the strength and vocal naturalness of the performer. Elena Zhidkova is in charge of playing the protective Niklausse and the maternal The Muse. The cast also includes Simón Orfila, Mikeldi Atxalandabaso, José Manuel Díaz, Moisés Marín, Fernando Latorre and Itxaro Mentxaka.

As for the music, Maestro Carlo Montanaro leads the Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonikoa in a fast-paced score, full of hypnotic and exuberant moments, with a complex and almost restless musical structure.

On the stage, the national premiere of a production by Vincent Huguet, who makes his debut in ABAO, with a classicist, impressive and modullar proposal, comprising monumental stairs and doors that represent a theatre and set the plot during a performance of Don Giovanni.

Pietro Mascagni / Ruggero Leoncavallo CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA PAGLIACCI 20, 23, 26 and 29 November 2021

• Ekaterina Semenchuck and Rocío Ignacio play the leading roles as Santuzza and Nedda. • Jorge de León and Ambrogio Maestri in the leading male roles in both operas. • An ABAO Bilbao Opera production devised by Joan Anton Rechi. • Daniel Oren makes his debut with the music direction of the double bill leading the Euskadiko Orkestra In November two titles from the Verismo school that synthesize the meaning of life and drama and in which primary feelings and religious ties trigger jealousy and desire for revenge.

Cavalleria rusticana by Mascagni and Pagliacci by Leoncavallo are two stories that represent daily life in the temporary and physical spaces where they take place. They are both dominated by uncontrollable impulses and gender-based violence. Cavalleria rusticana is a story full of religious repression that ends in a duel and Pagliacci is a story of infidelity that ends in murder.

Ekaterina Semenchuck, one of the most acclaimed mezzo-sopranos and a regular in the major houses of the world, is considered to be a performer of reference in the role of Santuzza, the female protagonist of Cavalleria rusticana. As for Rocío Ignacio, a soprano on the rise who returns to Bilbao after her successful ABAO on Stage recital last April, plays the role of Nedda, the tragic Columbine in Pagliacci.

Jorge de León plays the leading male role in both operas. Greatly appreciated by the audience of Bilbao after his extraordinary performance in Jerusalem by Verdi, he plays the demanding roles of Turiddu in Cavalleria rusticana and Canio in Pagliacci. Ambrogio Maestri, the renowned Italian baritone, also participates in both operas in the roles of Alfio and Tonio. The cast also includes Carlos Daza, Belén Elvira, Itxaro Mentxaka and Mikeldi Atxalandabaso.

In the pit, the debut of the Israeli conductor Daniel Oren, heir to the great Italian tradition, artistic director of the Giuseppe Verdi Theatre in Salerno, frequently found in the major coliseums all over the world, leads the Euskadiko Orkestra to tackle two scores, the first full of close, catchy, traditional music and the second more elaborate and symphonic.

On the stage, an ABAO Bilbao Opera production in a classical style inspired by cinema, devised by Joan Anton Rechi, who sets the action in a village in the south of the Mediterranean sea. The scenic approach dwells on the characteristics and the personality of the characters to develop the dramatic and disturbing aspect of both stories.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart LA CLEMENZA DI TITO 22, 25, 28 and 31 January 2022

• Premiered in ABAO Bilbao Opera. • A cast comprising Mozart specialists with Paolo Fanale’s debut in ABAO as one of the most remarkable. • Music direction by Riccardo Frizza, winner of the 2020 Opera XXI award to the Best Music Director, leading the Euskadiko Orkestra. • Production by Fabio Ceresa, corporeal, versatile and truly theatrical. • Sponsored by BBVA Foundation. 2022 opens with a premiere in ABAO, La clemenza di Tito, sponsored by BBVA Foundation. Mozart’s most political work, which was composed to celebrate the coronation of Leopold II, is an allegory that presents compassion as the main principle of good government.

The story explains the conspiracy of Vitellia and her lover Sesto to murder and overthrow the new emperor Tito, who, after finding out about their betrayal, prefers to show mercy and forgiveness.

Amongst the protagonists, the much awaited debut of the acclaimed tenor Paolo Fanale, the ever safe mezzo-soprano Daniela Barcellona as the lover Sesto and Vanessa Goikoetxea as the ambitious and cold Vitellia. The cast also includes Veta Pilipenko, in her debut, Itziar de Unda and Josep Miquel Ramón.

In the pit, Maestro Riccardo Frizza, who recently received the Opera XXI award to the Best Orchestra Conductor for his work in ABAO’s Lucia di Lammermoor in 2019, leads the Euskadiko Orkestra in a score that contains some of Mozart’s most delicate and sweetest moments. From the overture to the end, there are remarkably great scenes full of vertiginous lyricism.

The scenic proposal by Fabio Ceresa, debuting in ABAO, presents a high-quality creative line that effectively reflects and combines the palatial atmosphere with other settings such as the baths, recreating a fluid, corporeal and versatile ancient Rome with great theatrical plasticity.

Francis Poulenc / Alexander Zemlinsky LA VOIX HUMAINE EINE FLORENTINISCHE TRAGÖDIE 19, 22, 25 and 28 February 2022

• Premiered in ABAO Bilbao Opera • Ainhoa Arteta plays the female leading role in both operas together with Giorgio Berrugi and Egils Silins. • Production by Paco Azorín, urban, intelligent and very original. • Pedro Halffter’s expert baton leading the Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonikoa. In this list of masterpieces of the 20th Century, everything revolves around the female protagonists and their emotional process. In February, the operas La Voix humaine by Poulenc and Ein Florentinische Tragödie by Zemlinsky are brought together by the disheartening feeling experienced by the human being when rejected in love. Two passionate and dark dramas and two women facing the despair of heartbreak, deceit and betrayal.

In La voix humaine a woman calls her ex-lover. Unable to accept his having abandoned her, she praises him, despairs, and threatens him, hoping he will not hang up the phone. In Ein Florentinische Tragödie, a woman lives in a love triangle the miseries of the human soul, able to take refuge in the false morality of deceit and even murder.

Ainhoa Arteta makes her debut as both leading characters with all the dramatic intensity they require and with the acting part becoming particularly important. On her own, in La voix humaine in a display of scenic power, and together with Giorgio Berrugi and Egils Silins in Ein Florentinische Tragödie.

The expert baton of Pedro Halffter, great connoisseur of contemporary opera and a reference in the German repertoire, leads the Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonikoa in both scores with indescribable dramatic tension, extensive chromaticism and vigorous tonal expressionism.

Paco Azorín signs a production that presents an ambitious, original and well-planned piece, comprising both operas but providing each plot with a personality of its own. Nothing in excess and nothing lacking in an intelligent and stimulating urban scenic context that contributes to maintaining the dramatic tension until the end.

Giuseppe Verdi ALZIRA 23, 25, 27 and 30 April 2022

• Premiered in ABAO Bilbao Opera. • Alzira, last title of the Tutto Verdi project. • Hui He, Sergio Escobar and Juan Jesus Rodriguez in the leading roles. • In the music direction Daniel Oren, artistic director of the Giuseppe Verdi Theatre of Salerno, leading the Orquesta Bilbao Sinfonietta. • Coproduction of ABAO Bilbao Opera, winner of the 2019 Opera XXI award to the Best Latin American Production.

April brings the premiere of Alzira, one of the lesser known operas by Giuseppe Verdi, with which ABAO Bilbao Opera concludes the flagship project Tutto Verdi. This project was started in 2006 and has brought to Bilbao 30 titles of the Verdi catalogue, conference cycles, recordings and publications, in a cultural programme that is unprecedented in the world and has lasted 15 years.

This ethnic opera is inspired in Voltaire’s work ‘Alzira and the Americans’ and contains all the seeds which would subsequently make the genius from Busseto famous. Finding a story which deals with Peru and the time of the Conquest in the world’s most popular and most performed composer adds an extra bonus to an epic work involving the conquerors and the oppressed, together with a devastating love triangle.

Amongst the protagonists, the debut of the highly-praised soprano of Chinese origin Hui He, the tenor Sergio Escobar, who succeeded in Paris in Verdi’s Don Carlo, and the ever safe baritone Juan Jesús Rodriguez.

The conductor Daniel Oren, repeats in the 70th season, leading the Orquesta Bilbao Sinfonietta on this occasion.

The coproduction of ABAO Bilbao Opera, the Grand National Theatre of Peru and the Opera Royal de Wallonie-Liège, devised by Jean Pierre Gamarra, who is debuting in Bilbao, was designed in 2018 within the framework of the celebrations for the Bicentenary of the Independence of Peru and has recently received the 2019 Opera XXI Award to the best Latin American Production. It is premiered for the first time in Spain.

The action is set in the Lima of the early 20th century, with sophisticated western-style costumes and a minimalist and melancholic stage design, where lighting becomes especially important and gives a sensation of tragedy, reclusion and claustrophobia which is fitting for this story of dominated and oppressed people. A creative proposal of high quality that deals with current issues, since it addresses a dialectic combat between the European America and the American landowner, the fight for supremacy, the systematic abuse of the Church and the tragic fate of a woman in a world driven by men’s obsessions.

Giacomo Puccini MADAMA BUTTERFLY 21, 24, 27, 28 (Opera Berri) and 30 May 2022

• María Agresta and Sergio Escobar in the leading roles. • Production devised by the reputed producer Stefano Monti, classical, elegant and highly visual. • Debut of Henrik Nánási, one of the great international maestros, leading the Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonikoa • 16th edition of the Opera Berri programme with Carmen Solís and Javier Tomé in the leading roles and tickets at half the usual price. • Sponsored by BBVA Foundation. The immortal Madama Butterfly by Puccini, one of the most representative operas of the Italian repertoire due to its dramatic intensity and to the fact that it contains some of the most beautiful and best known arias in the history of opera, closes the season in May, sponsored by BBVA Foundation. A love tragedy that shows a lucid and empathetic image of the psychological journey of its protagonist.

It tells the story of an unaffected and naive young geisha who marries a US Navy officer who later abandons her. The opera shows the growth of the main character from the innocent child to the mature young girl and, finally, woman, mother and martyr.

The silent heroine Cio-Cio San, a sopranos’ dream role due to its famous arias, will be performed by the virtuous voice of María Agresta, who is making her debut in ABAO, and the cruel officer Pinkerton by Sergio Escobar. The cast also includes Carmen Artaza, Damián del Castillo, Jorge Rodriguez-Norton, Marta Ubieta, José Manuel Díaz and Fernando Latorre.

As for the music, ABAO brings the debut of the Hungarian conductor Henrik Nánási, closely linked to the Komische Oper of Berlin as general conductor between 2012 and 2017, and a regular in the major international operatic coliseums. He leads the Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonikoa in a score of extraordinary instrumental richness in which traditional Eastern and Western themes are intermingled.

The stage director is Stefano Monti, characterized by the rigour of his projects, who presents a careful, delicate, sweet and intimate proposal, using the movements of the dancers, mobile

ROSSINI IS THE PROTAGONIST OF THE CONCERT IN APRIL WITH TWO NEW PREMIERES IN THE ARRIAGA THEATRE

• Stabat Mater and Giovanna d’Arco, two new premieres in ABAO Bilbao Opera. • Four great voices: Angela Meade, Marianna Pizzolato, Paolo Fanale and Simón Orfila • Debut of the music director of the , Nicola Luisotti • Concert not included in the season ticket • Sponsored by BBVA Foundation

A new edition of The Concert will take place on 6 April, sponsored by BBVA Foundation, with the premiere in ABAO Bilbao Opera’s repertoire of two works by Rossini: Giovanna d’Arco, a cantata for solo voice, and Stabat Mater, a great choral-symphonic work with a remarkable operatic character. The Concert will have a single performance, not included in the season ticket, at the Arriaga Theatre.

To deal with such a deep religious text, Rossini composed a work of great theatricality and feeling. The passionate and moving spirit of the work provides an almost physical emotion to the Virgin’s pain. An impression that empathizes with the audience’s emotions through seductive melodies and a glistening and radiant orchestation, whose pastoral brings the divine closer to the human.

To perform these two works by the swan of Pésaro, ABAO Bilbao Opera has gathered a selected quartet of singers: the soprano Angela Meade, the mezzosoprano Marianna Pizzolato, who debuts in ABAO, the tenor Paolo Fanale and the bass Simón Orfila.

The music direction is by Maestro Nicola Luisotti, associatate director of Teatro Real and music director of the San Francisco Opera until 2018, who will lead the Orquesta Sinfónica Verum.
