  • Key Scriptures: Revelation 19:1-21 Ezekiel 38 & 39 Joel 2:1-11
God's Master Plan In Prophecy Lesson 13 – The Battle of Armageddon & 2nd Coming of Jesus Christ Key Scriptures: Revelation 19:1-21 Ezekiel 38 & 39 Joel 2:1-11 Zechariah 12-14 Introduction Rev 19:1 After these things I heard something like a loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying, "Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God; While the Wrath of God is being poured out, there was the voice of "a great multitude in heaven" praising God! This is the redeemed church which has missed the Wrath of God and was taken out of Great Tribulation. While the earth is experiencing the judgment of God without mercy, we are experiencing His goodness without judgment! Rev 19:2-3 BECAUSE HIS JUDGMENTS ARE TRUE AND RIGHTEOUS; for He has judged the great harlot who was corrupting the earth with her immorality, and HE HAS AVENGED THE BLOOD OF HIS BOND-SERVANTS ON HER." 3 And a second time they said, "Hallelujah! HER SMOKE RISES UP FOREVER AND EVER." From what is being said in these verse, it is obvious that the church will be fully aware of what is happening upon the earth during this time, yet because we are no longer viewing earth's events through the eyes of mortal flesh, we will understand that God is righteous and true in His judgments. To modern minds it may seem strange to worship and say, “hallelujah” over the fact that God is pouring out judgment, but that is because we see imperfectly now.

  • The Book of Joel: Anticipating a Post-Prophetic Age
HAYYIM ANGEL The Book of Joel: Anticipating a Post-Prophetic Age Introduction OF THE FIFTEEN “Latter Prophets”, Joel’s chronological setting is the most difficult to identify. Yet, the dating of the book potentially has significant implications for determining the overall purposes of Joel’s prophecies. The book’s outline is simple enough. Chapters one and two are a description of and response to a devastating locust plague that occurred in Joel’s time. Chapters three and four are a prophecy of consolation predict- ing widespread prophecy, a major battle, and then ultimate peace and pros- perity.1 In this essay, we will consider the dating of the book of Joel, the book’s overall themes, and how Joel’s unique message fits into his likely chronological setting.2 Dating Midrashim and later commentators often attempt to identify obscure figures by associating them with known figures or events. One Midrash quoted by Rashi identifies the prophet Joel with the son of Samuel (c. 1000 B.C.E.): When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons judges over Israel. The name of his first-born son was Joel, and his second son’s name was Abijah; they sat as judges in Beer-sheba. But his sons did not follow in his ways; they were bent on gain, they accepted bribes, and they subvert- ed justice. (I Sam. 8:1-3)3 RABBI HAYYIM ANGEL is the Rabbi of Congregation Shearith Israel. He is the author of several books including Creating Space Between Peshat & Derash: A Collection of Studies on Tanakh. 21 22 Milin Havivin Since Samuel’s son was wicked, the Midrash explains that he must have repented in order to attain prophecy.

That "Barton Fink Feeling” and the Fiery Furnace: The Book of Daniel and Joel and Ethan Coen's Barton Fink Abstract This paper explores the use of the Book of Daniel in Joel and Ethan Coen's Barton Fink. While some critics have noted the film's "apocalyptic” dimension, and have even mentioned the movie's two explicit mentions of the Daniel story, none has studied the close relationship between the biblical text and the film. This article argues that the Book of Daniel is central to the structure of Barton Fink, by arguing that the movie both presents the crisis of Barton's visionary attempt to deliver both a dream and its interpretation (Dan. 2:5), and offers an apocalyptic "cure” to correct his vision.

  • Doing a 180° Joel 2:12-13 (NRSV) 12 Yet Even Now, Says the Lord, Return
Doing a 180° Joel 2:12-13 (NRSV) 12 Yet even now, says the Lord, return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; 13 rend your hearts and not your clothing. Return to the Lord, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love, and relents from punishing. Isaiah 58:5-7 (MSG) 5 Do you think this is the kind of fast day I’m after: a day to show off humility? To put on a pious long face and parade around solemnly in black? Do you call that fasting, a fast day that I, God, would like? 6 “This is the kind of fast day I’m after: to break the chains of injustice, get rid of exploitation in the workplace, free the oppressed, cancel debts. 7 What I’m interested in seeing you do is: sharing your food with the hungry, inviting the homeless poor into your homes, putting clothes on the shivering ill-clad, being available to your own families. Reflection: In Sara Miles’ book, City of God, she recounts a conversation with her priest in which he said, “Feelings are stupid. Jesus doesn’t care if you feel guilty. Jesus wants you to change.” That has always stuck with me because it’s really just a re-wording of something my mom said to me a lot when I was a kid: “don’t just say you’re sorry; show me.” Prattling on about my regret or guilt did nothing for her.

  • A Note on the Chronology of the Book of Joel
zutot 14 (2017) 3-5 ZUTOT: Perspectives on Jewish Culture brill.com/zuto brill.com/zuto A Note on the Chronology of the Book of Joel Israel Netanel Rubin Jerusalem Abstract This short note points to a Talmudic source that supports modern research that locates the prophet Joel in the Second Temple period, contrary to the common orthodox tradi- tion that Joel prophesied in the First Temple period. Keywords Joel – chronology – Bible One of the books of the Bible that is chronologically problematic is the Book of Joel. The book itself does not provide any information on his lifetime, neither at the beginning of the book as is customary, nor elsewhere in the text. The rab- binic tradition tried to fill this gap and offered some suggestions, which Rashi and Radak cite at the start of their commentaries to the book: ‘Some say that this prophet prophesied in the days of Joram son of Ahab, as he states: he pre- dicted there would be famine in the land, as he said: for the Lord hath called for a famine (…) and Seder Olam said that he prophesied in the days of Manasseh, saying: Joel, Nahum and Habakkuk prophesied in the days of Manasseh, and because Manasseh was not honest they were not named after him.’1 Both sug- gestions position Joel in the First Temple period, and the first one even puts him ahead of the first writing prophets known to us. This convention was accepted also by Maimonides in his introduction to his Mishneh Torah, where he places Yoel in his tradition-chain after Isaiah, between Michah and Nahum: 1 Radak, Joel 1, 1 and similarly at Rashi, Joel 1, 1.

For example, the inability to date firmly the book makes it exceedingly difficult to find an original meaning for the work. In addition, the failure of scholars to come to a consensus on the connection between the locust plague and the Day of Yahweh theme in the book exacerbates the interpretive problems further.

  • Session 1 Introducing the Book of Joel
INTERNATIONAL HOUSE OF PRAYER – MIKE BICKLE STUDIES IN THE BOOK OF JOEL Session 1 Introducing the Book of Joel I. WHY STUDY JOEL A. I have often been asked why it is so important to study the book of Joel. What relevance do the locust plagues and military invasions of ancient Israel have in our day? Why should we spend a lot of time and energy poring over this Old Testament book? B. We must study the book of Joel because it equips end-time forerunner messengers to prepare the unprepared for the unique dynamics that will occur in the generation in which Jesus returns. We study this three-chapter prophecy because God has uniquely designed its message to prepare the end-time church for the unprecedented glory and crisis that will occur in events related to the Day of the Lord. It is an “instruction manual” to prepare the Bride for such a time as this. II. AN OVERVIEW OF JOEL’S MESSAGE A. Joel 1: A natural disaster (agricultural and economic crisis) B. Joel 2:1-11: A military crisis (Babylonian invasion of Israel as a type of the Antichrist’s invasion) C. Joel 2:12-17: The response that God requires to release His protection and blessing D. Joel 2:18-31: The breakthrough of God’s blessing (agriculturally, politically, spiritually, etc.) E. Joel 3: God’s punishment of His enemies (the Antichrist’s armies will be destroyed) III. PREMISE 1: ACTS 2 INTERPRETS JOEL 2 A. On the day of Pentecost, 120 followers of Jesus were gathered together eagerly waiting for the promise of the Holy Spirit, as they obeyed Jesus’ command to wait (tarry) in Jerusalem until they received power from on high (Lk.
