Stradey Park Hotel & Spa, , SA15 4HA. T: 01554 758171 e:[email protected] | www.stradeyparkhotel.com Mr Ian M. Smith Pastoral Letter Dear Friends, March had the wonderful victory of the Rugby team winning the Six Nations Grand Slam in history-making style as they defeated Ireland. But amongst the joy and the cheering, there would have been sorrow in the heart of Warren Gatland for his home nation of New Zealand after the terrorist attack in Christchurch. The Bishop of St David’s, Joanna Penberthy, has reached out to the people of Christchurch, New Zealand, following the attack on the Masjif Al Noor mosque. She said:

“My prayers are with the Muslim community in Aotearoa, New Zealand and with the Muslim community in the U.K. in the wake of the Christchurch atrocity. All of us together must condemn violence and stand against hatred and prejudice.”

There is a great deal of hatred and fear of others who are different from ourselves in this country and all over the world. Christ calls us to be examples of a better way to live. He gave us a wonderful example in himself how we should behave towards others, as Jesus never turned anyone away. He died to save us all and this is what we celebrate through Holy Week and Easter. His great love won for us salvation as He broke the bonds of death and rose again. His resurrection brings the promise of eternal life to all who will follow Him.

As followers of Christ we are not to be conformed to this world but we are to be transformed by the renewing of our mind through faith. (Romans 12:2).

To conform to this world means literally to be with it. That’s one of the strongest drives we have as humans; to fit in with others and that temptation still applies to Christians. We’re often engulfed by peer pressure that pushes us to imitate and participate in all of the structures and the styles of this world. The Bible says we are not to be conformed to the patterns of this world.

It is quite wrong for us to think that as Christians all we have to do is to become obvious nonconformists. So, if the world wears buttons and bows, we don’t wear buttons and bows, or if the world wears lipstick, we don’t wear lipstick. We try to show ways in which we are different from the world. Deb’s Holistic Health & Foot Care

Local community toenail trimming clinics in Morfa Vestry, Kidwelly and Village Hall, Ferryside by appointment only For further details and to book, please phone Debra Byers 07968-553634 what the Bible is talking about. It’s not just a matter of being different from the world; we are to go beyond nonconformity to transformation. That fits with everything the Scripture tells us of being salt and light to the world. Something that is transformed is something that is changed. The prefix trans-means “above and beyond.” We are to be above and beyond the standards of this world, not in the sense that we are to elevate ourselves in lofty status above everybody else, but that we are called to a more excellent way of life.

That doesn’t mean you drop out of the world; this world is God’s world, and this is where Christ’s redemption is won. We cannot hide ourselves away from the world. God the Holy Spirit won’t tolerate that. Christ has given us a mandate to tell his message and his love to as many people as we can and that can only be done out in the world. That’s what Jesus did; he went into the world in order to save the world. This world is the world that God has committed himself to renew and redeem, and we are to participate in that with him. So, celebrate the victories and mourn the losses, but let us always be mindful that we are the Lord’s redeemed people and also, let us spread the Easter message to all those who will hear. Amen Happy Easter! Your Priest-in-Charge, Trevor

An Easter Prayer

Gracious, loving Father, Thank you for the wonderful reality of Jesus’ resurrection on that first Easter Day. Thank you that, because Jesus is alive, life has meaning and purpose. When we don’t understand why some things happen, when life is difficult, when we are struggling through pain and loss, help us to know your risen presence and love in our lives. Help us to choose to trust you. Help us always to be thankful for your amazing Easter gift of life and hope. In Jesus’ name, Amen. By Daphne Kitching Renault Clio Kia Sportage

New Renault Koleos Dacia Stepway Meeting of the PCC, Wednesday February 20th.

This is a summary of the main points discussed. Considerable time was spent reviewing church finances as there has been a considerable increase in the Parish Share that goes to the Diocese, whereas numbers attending church have fallen. The PCC is grateful for all the work done by the Treasurer. As a rough guide, it takes £1,200 per week to keep the church doors open, a fact that local people may not be aware of.

Church is also needing to raise a substantial sum for the necessary repairs and improvements to the Parish Room. The Friends have made an excellent start, raising £12,000 to date which has been ringfenced for the Parish Room. Grant applications require a considerable amount of paperwork regarding policies, insurance and other documents. It is also important to have letters of support from organisations using the Parish Room.

Electrical work has been done in St. Teilo and now the heating has to be tackled. The PCC approved the installation of wall mounted electric heaters.

As part of his training, an ordinand, Robert Moore, has been with us certain Sundays in March and will continue on April 7th and 14th.

The Vicar has met with Marianne Osborne to arrange dates to establish the Local Ministry Area of Bro Cydweli. There will be several meetings with various church officers and the Ministry Team and the final inauguration service will be on Thursday, October 10th at 7pm in St. Mary’s.

Treasurer’s Report

My first year as Treasurer has been challenging at times and my warm thanks to the Vicar, church wardens and PCC members for their support. Also, a special thank you to Edwin Atkinson for his help and support during the year. We ended 2018 with a large overspend of over £11,000, necessitating drawing significantly on our reserves. If this deficit trend does not change, we will be facing a very tough 2019 financially. This has not been helped by the substantial increase in our ministry share by £6000. We are already struggling to meet our March ministry share payment. • Upset digestion • Poo eating • Bad breath • Full anal glands • Itchy skin/ears/feet • Weight problems • Tear staining • Body odour • Persistent moulting • Lack of vitality • Fussy eating • Behaviour problems • Sti ness • Tooth tartar

Several church members have taken the option of planned giving by the ‘Gift It’ scheme. This helps ensure a regular monthly income which is gift aided and the gift aid is in our account the following month improving our cash flow. We would also welcome any fundraising ideas members may have will help us replenish our depleted reserves. The full accounts for 2018 will be displayed at the back of the church at the beginning of April in advance of the Easter Vestry. If you would like to discuss any of the accounts or issues raised in my report please do call me on 01267 267189. Diane Cuff, Treasurer

Public Meeting about LMA

There will be a meeting for everyone in the parishes on Wednesday, 15th May at 7pm in the Parish Room, Lady Street.

Revd. Marianne Osborne will be there to explain the transition stages needed to lead up to the inauguration of Bro Cydweli LMA. She will be happy to answer any questions you may have, so please come and find out all you need to know.

In April, the branch celebrates its 60th anniversary, having been formed by Mrs. Bronwen Walters in April 1959, a year after her husband, Canon Douglas Walters, was appointed Vicar of the parish. We will be holding a service of thanksgiving at 11.00am, 10th April, in St. Mary's followed by a lunch in the Three Rivers Hotel, Ferryside. Our Archdeacon, the Venerable Dorrien Davies will be giving the address at the service. We continue to keep our Indoor members and parishioners who are unwell at this time in our prayers.

Almighty God, I offer this prayer for those who are in need of your mercy; those with broken hearts and broken lives. Bless them with your healing grace. Change their circumstances and grant them peace and prosperity in abundance. Radiate your healing power when hardships overwhelm their bodies. Fill them with gladness from above and hold them up with your divine strength. Amen – taken from our MU prayer book 'Dear Lord'.

Parish Room Fundraising.

The sale of Chicks is going very well with nearly 200 being sold in the first week. Names for the beautiful white Teddy are also selling well, at just £1 per name, again a third of the names have been picked at the first event. If anyone would like to donate an Easter-themed prize for the raffle (eg child’s Easter egg) to be held on 6th April at the Coop, or if you are willing to help man the stall for a while, please see Dee. We need to raise in the region of £50,000 to create the new, improved Parish Room for us to use and to hire out to the community. More fundraising ideas are needed, but realistically, to raise such a large sum, we must apply for grants. If you, or someone you know, has experience of form filling, especially grant application forms or feels they could assist in some way, please contact Trevor or the Church Wardens. Messy Church and Sunday School.

The Sunday School have been having their own Lent Course based on Crosses of the World. We started with the ash crosses we receive on Ash Wednesday, symbolizing Repentance. This was followed by Taizé crosses; we talked about the Taizé community and their welcome to anyone who wishes to spend time praying, singing and working with them. The third week was about making the decision to follow Jesus; the children all made their own Holding crosses from modelling clay which we baked in the oven. They will use them to say their prayers each day. The fourth cross is the Irish or St. Bridget’s cross, symbolizing Forgiveness. All the crosses are being made into a banner to be displayed on Easter Day.

In March’s Messy Church we told the story of Queen Esther, complete with ‘graggers’ (noisy musical instruments), crowns, sceptres, masks and cakes fit for a queen, cheering the heroes and booing the baddie - great fun with a serious message about having the courage to do the right thing.

Our March meeting saw us all wearing daffodils in respect of St. David’s Day. We welcomed new member, Joyce Harris, who we hope will enjoy being with us. We are happy to say all members are back up to strength and we were pleased to see Ann Burt with us. Our Best Wishes go to those who have birthdays, and Congratulations to Bobbie who will be celebrating her Diamond Wedding Anniversary at the end of March. Our speaker this month was Phil Thompson, who gave us a talk on the Alzheimer’s Association ‘Dementia Friends Scheme’. The Town Council has adopted the scheme and has taken steps to make Kidwelly a Dementia Friendly town and is encouraging people, businesses and groups to participate. There are 100 types of Dementia caused by disease of the brain. It’s not only relevant to the elderly as it can happen at any time of life, and it’s not just about losing the memory as it can affect communicating, thinking, and doing everyday tasks, e.g. where to start when making a cup of tea, or perception as in a black mat that can be perceived as a hole in the ground. We must realise that there is more to a person than Dementia, and, although it might need adaptations to everyday life, it is possible to live well with Dementia. If you think you might be experiencing changes yourself, see a doctor as it cannot be cured but it can be helped. Thank you, Phil, for a very enlightening talk, easily understandable with everyday analogies. Our next meeting will be on 3rd April, 2pm at the Rugby Club, when we hope to have details of our first trip of the year in April.

As many of the families / carers who attend often say, “ We learn something new every time we come to Ty-Golau”. Welsh cakes were made at our Antioch session and the smell permeated (so we were told) throughout the building.

‘ All things Irish’ in honour of St. Patrick’s Day went well with one of our volunteers dressed as a big, overgrown Leprechaun (not a pretty sight!). Everyone enjoyed the home baked Irish soda bread (lavishly spread with good, Welsh butter).

Some of our volunteers attended a Dementia Friendly session at the Hub and gained their Dementia Friendly badges.

A presentation was given to the ‘Young at Heart’ group at Pen-y-groes. 75 members attended and listened attentively to the presentation on the work being carried out at Ty-Golau.

The Foundation Phase theme this past term was 'Space'. They created a mind map centring on life and ideas. Thoughts about reaching the moon featured strongly and they chose to build a rocket and telescope to view outer space whilst learning names of planets to create travel maps. A highlight was a visit to Techniquest and Museum and seeing the Soyuz capsule that brought Tim Peake back to earth safely. In their physical education lessons they have been learning gymnastic shapes and in circle time sessions they have been learning what makes a good friend. What a splendid lesson, we are never too young or too old to appreciate a good friend . Key Stage 2's theme was a stomach churning subject - 'What affects our body? / Under the skin' with a focus on science and what affects different aspects of the body. In addition to this, there were three weeks of intensive but successful swimming lessons and a science trip early in the year. They studied the history of leading health pioneers. Apparently Louis Pasteur would not shake hands with anyone, what was the reason for this? Half term came to a close with a short theme, 'Wales', focusing on reading and presenting and understanding information, mapping and directional work across Wales, collecting Welsh themed recipes and creating a series of Welsh verses, all in readiness for Dydd Gwyl Dewi. Halen y Ddaear

How does one acknowledge receiving an award without sounding ?? ** but I simply wish to take the opportunity to thank all the people who made this possible. Earlier this month, I was given S4C Prynhawn Da's " Halen y Ddaear " award, but I ask why me? I may be allowed to keep the tasteful display plate and have many weeks of pleasure from the most beautiful bouquet of flowers but in reality, these belong to all the people I have had the enjoyment of working and living alongside. Unsuspectingly, I went along to the Neuadd to enjoy an evening of Cawl a

Chan organized by Ysgol Mynyddygarreg, to listen to the delightful school choir, dressed in their smart Welsh costumes, and to sing as guests with my beloved "Only Mynydd Aloud " under the baton of Ioan Hefin. When Alwyn Humphries made an appearance at my side, all I thought was, what a great advert for our lovely little school that the television cameras turned up to film them. Shock of shocks, I was to be filmed also! When Mr Humphries said my name, I was secretly pleased that he remembered my name from our chat at the Cydweli 900 Dechrau Canu, Dechrau Canmol event. But of course, he didn't remember me at all; his greeting was of a different nature. A nicer gentleman you couldn't wish to meet and he tried to make me feel at ease but it was obvious I was in big shock because for once I was lost for words. The efforts of the school committee in decorating the Neuadd, preparing their smart children, sourcing a very tasteful raffle and the delicious Cawl they served, and the Neuadd committee for maintaining a much envied building, provided a setting that drew compliments from the Television producer and crew, who said that this had possibly been the best evening of filming Halen y Ddaear they had encountered in their run. What a testimony to our community, and I share it with you so that we can be rightly proud that the warmth and welcome we display is appreciated and felt by all. I want to thank my dear friend, Peggy Davies, aka Hen Fenyw Fach Cydweli, who nominated me. How many people are fortunate to have the claim to fame of being a friend to such a prestigious lady as Hen Fenyw Fach; well too many to count I would say, but diolch yn fawr i ti annwyl Peg am enwebi fi. Bit of pay-back time possibly? Thanks to Helen John for an amazing celebration cake and to Helen and Peg for laying on a stupendous buffet. Diolch o galon i chi ferched. But as I say, why me? There are so many around who are far more deserving. When I was asked what makes me want to try to be a community person, part of the reply was, how did I get so lucky to live in such a great place and for this I am eternally thankful, and it is good and right to give something back. But I lean on the words of my very favourite hymn, " Bydd yn Wrol " and the last line, " Cred yn Nuw a gwna dy waith ". And there lies the answer, the words speak for themselves. Diolch. Dorian
