Smith Pastoral Letter Dear Friends, March had the wonderful victory of the Wales Rugby team winning the Six Nations Grand Slam in history-making style as they defeated Ireland. But amongst the joy and the cheering, there would have been sorrow in the heart of Warren Gatland for his home nation of New Zealand after the terrorist attack in Christchurch. The Bishop of St David’s, Joanna Penberthy, has reached out to the people of Christchurch, New Zealand, following the attack on the Masjif Al Noor mosque. She said: “My prayers are with the Muslim community in Aotearoa, New Zealand and with the Muslim community in the U.K. in the wake of the Christchurch atrocity. All of us together must condemn violence and stand against hatred and prejudice.” There is a great deal of hatred and fear of others who are different from ourselves in this country and all over the world. Christ calls us to be examples of a better way to live. He gave us a wonderful example in himself how we should behave towards others, as Jesus never turned anyone away. He died to save us all and this is what we celebrate through Holy Week and Easter. His great love won for us salvation as He broke the bonds of death and rose again. His resurrection brings the promise of eternal life to all who will follow Him. As followers of Christ we are not to be conformed to this world but we are to be transformed by the renewing of our mind through faith. (Romans 12:2). To conform to this world means literally to be with it. That’s one of the strongest drives we have as humans; to fit in with others and that temptation still applies to Christians. We’re often engulfed by peer pressure that pushes us to imitate and participate in all of the structures and the styles of this world. The Bible says we are not to be conformed to the patterns of this world. It is quite wrong for us to think that as Christians all we have to do is to become obvious nonconformists. So, if the world wears buttons and bows, we don’t wear buttons and bows, or if the world wears lipstick, we don’t wear lipstick. We try to show ways in which we are different from the world. It’s not just a matter of being different from the world; we are to go beyond nonconformity to transformation. That fits with everything the Scripture tells us of being salt and light to the world. Something that is transformed is something that is changed. The prefix trans-means “above and beyond.” We are to be above and beyond the standards of this world, not in the sense that we are to elevate ourselves in lofty status above everybody else, but that we are called to a more excellent way of life. That doesn’t mean you drop out of the world; this world is God’s world, and this is where Christ’s redemption is won. We cannot hide ourselves away from the world. God the Holy Spirit won’t tolerate that. Christ has given us a mandate to tell his message and his love to as many people as we can and that can only be done out in the world. That’s what Jesus did; he went into the world in order to save the world. This world is the world that God has committed himself to renew and redeem, and we are to participate in that with him. So, celebrate the victories and mourn the losses, but let us always be mindful that we are the Lord’s redeemed people and also, let us spread the Easter message to all those who will hear. Amen Happy Easter! Your Priest-in-Charge, Trevor An Easter Prayer Gracious, loving Father, Thank you for the wonderful reality of Jesus’ resurrection on that first Easter Day. Thank you that, because Jesus is alive, life has meaning and purpose. When we don’t understand why some things happen, when life is difficult, when we are struggling through pain and loss, help us to know your risen presence and love in our lives. Help us to choose to trust you. Help us always to be thankful for your amazing Easter gift of life and hope. In Jesus’ name, Amen. By Daphne Kitching Renault Clio Kia Sportage New Renault Koleos Dacia Stepway Meeting of the PCC, Wednesday February 20th. This is a summary of the main points discussed. Considerable time was spent reviewing church finances as there has been a considerable increase in the Parish Share that goes to the Diocese, whereas numbers attending church have fallen. The PCC is grateful for all the work done by the Treasurer. As a rough guide, it takes £1,200 per week to keep the church doors open, a fact that local people may not be aware of. Church is also needing to raise a substantial sum for the necessary repairs and improvements to the Parish Room. The Friends have made an excellent start, raising £12,000 to date which has been ringfenced for the Parish Room. Grant applications require a considerable amount of paperwork regarding policies, insurance and other documents. It is also important to have letters of support from organisations using the Parish Room. Electrical work has been done in St. Teilo and now the heating has to be tackled. The PCC approved the installation of wall mounted electric heaters. As part of his training, an ordinand, Robert Moore, has been with us certain Sundays in March and will continue on April 7th and 14th. The Vicar has met with Marianne Osborne to arrange dates to establish the Local Ministry Area of Bro Cydweli. There will be several meetings with various church officers and the Ministry Team and the final inauguration service will be on Thursday, October 10th at 7pm in St. Mary’s. Treasurer’s Report My first year as Treasurer has been challenging at times and my warm thanks to the Vicar, church wardens and PCC members for their support. Also, a special thank you to Edwin Atkinson for his help and support during the year. We ended 2018 with a large overspend of over £11,000, necessitating drawing significantly on our reserves. If this deficit trend does not change, we will be facing a very tough 2019 financially. This has not been helped by the substantial increase in our ministry share by £6000. We are already struggling to meet our March ministry share payment. • Upset digestion • Poo eating • Bad breath • Full anal glands • Itchy skin/ears/feet • Weight problems • Tear staining • Body odour • Persistent moulting • Lack of vitality • Fussy eating • Behaviour problems • Stiness • Tooth tartar For the best advice service in the business, call our in-house nutritionists on freephone: 0800 083 6696 Developed by Veterinary Surgeon BVMS MRCVS www.burnspet.co.uk In these difficult circumstances I would hope that all the congregation will help us rise to meet the challenge. Several church members have taken the option of planned giving by the church in Wales ‘Gift It’ scheme. This helps ensure a regular monthly income which is gift aided and the gift aid is in our account the following month improving our cash flow.
