Introduction: The Stanley Show Stanley Matthews turned matter-of-factly, his stare fixed to avoid eye contact. AUSTRALIAN CRICKET SOCIETY 54th Annual Report & Financial Statements 2020~2021 to be presented at the Annual General Meeting of the Australian Cricket Society Incorporated on Friday, 20th August 2021 Australian Cricket Society Inc. Established 1967 President's Report It is my pleasure to report on another highly successful and buoyant year for the Australian Cricket Society in 2020-21. Despite all the challenges of lockdowns and the nation’s roller- coasting battle with Covid-19 we have been able to complete a dozen functions in the last 12 months, albeit the majority by ‘Zoom’, allowing us to make another substantial donation to our gold charity partners the Ponting Foundation. Among the Zoom guests were Test offspinner Ashley Mallett, authors David Frith, Dan Liebke, Craig Dodson and Wes Cusworth and leading Australian women Annabel Sutherland and Rachael Haynes. We were also pleased to hold our annual dinner, which Covid- 19 had precluded from being held in 2020. Cricket’s fraternity and friendships were never more important than in July when our dinner guest, Test fast bowler James Pattinson was in touch on the Wednesday, telling me that a personal issue precluded his attendance for the Friday. There was just 48 hours to go and Victoria’s head coach Chris Rogers stepped in. Chris Rogers demonstrating how high the Master should be raising his arm when bowling! Established in 1880, we are proud to be one of the founder members of the EFL and the first team to ever achieve the double, winning the league and the FA Cup in the first league season in 1888. This memorable season also saw North End go unbeaten in the league and the FA Cup, giving us the famous title ‘The Invincibles’. In recent years, North End were crowned third division champions in 1996 and second division champions in 2000. After nine Play-Off attempts across the second, third and fourth tiers, the Lilywhites secured victory at Wembley in 2015, back into the Championship. Several notable players have played for Preston North End over the years, including England legend Sir Tom Finney, Scottish defender and future Liverpool legend, Bill Shankly and the club’s record appearance maker and Republic of Ireland international goalkeeper, Alan Kelly senior. CRICKET MEMORABILIA SOCIETY POSTAL AUCTION CLOSING AT NOON 10th JULY 2020 Conditions of Postal Sale The CMS reserves the right to refuse items which are damaged or unsuitable, or we have doubts about authenticity. Reserves can be placed on lots but must be agreed with the CMS. They should reflect realistic values/expectations and not be the “highest price” expected. The CMS will take 7% of the price realised, the vendor 93% which will normally be paid no later than 6 weeks after the auction. The CMS will undertake to advertise the memorabilia for auction on its website no later than 3 weeks prior to the closing date of the auction. Bids will only be accepted from CMS members. Postal bids must be in writing or e-mail by the closing date and time shown above. Generally, no item will be sold below 10% of the lower estimate without reference to the vendor.. Thus, an item with a £10-15 estimate can be sold for £9, but not £8, without approval. The incremental scale for the acceptance of bids is as follows: £2 increments up to £20, then £20/22/25/28/30 up to £50, then £5 increments to £100 and £10 increments above that. So, if there are two postal bids at £25 and £30, the item will go to the higher bidder at £28. Should there be two identical bids, the first received will win. Bids submitted between increments will be accepted, thus a £52 bid will not be rounded either up or down. Items will be sent to successful postal bidders the week after the auction and will be sent by the cheapest rate commensurate with the value and size of the item. -

SOUTHAMPTON ATHLETIC CLUB ROLL OF HONOUR Best performances In 1886 C, Rogers of Southampton Harriers won the A.A.A. 4 miles title. Hampshire A.A. have had an enquiry from a lady about her grandfather who was cycling down from a village outside Andover in the 1890’s to run (in hobnail boots) in cross-country and Hare & Hounds. As he was the hare sometimes, this again supports a local club membership. H.A.A.A. was formed in 1927. Probably due to the clash Hampshire Athletic Club changed its name to Southampton Amateur Athletic Club on 15 th February, 1932. A Ladies Section was added on 14 th December, 1949 for cross-country but track and field, badminton and netball quickly followed. The club amalgamated with Eastleigh Amateur A.C. on 1 st December, 1970.to form Southampton & Eastleigh A,C. Later names were Southampton City A.C. and after amalgamation with Team Solent in November, 2004 Team Southampton. The next amalgamation was with Southampton R.C. on 1 ST April, 2010 to become the present Southampton A.C. As no club was dissolved to form Southampton A.C. I have used members of all the named clubs, except the Harriers, to assemble these records. I am particularly indebted to Rod Davies and Aaron Bennett for their data. So far there is one deliberate mistake and doubtless many unintentional ones. I am only too happy to be corrected, so inundate me with e-mail at [email protected] . The clubs have competed on the grass tracks at the County Cricket Ground, the Civil Service Ground and Fleming Park, and the Redgra Education track at Redbridge. -
