Orissa Review September - 2009 The Concept of Mother Goddess in the Art and Literature of Orissa Jayanti Rath The concept of Mother Goddess probably accommodates the largest number of paradoxes. She is a virgin and yet she is also the mother, a mother goddess. She is the Saivite Parvati and also a Vaishnavi. She is the purest of the pure. She is blood-thirsty Kali and also the very embodiment of the merciful and beautiful Amba or Lalita. She is invincible; she is the slayer of demons. She is Durga, with many arms. She is Sakti, the divine principle. This multiplicity of paradoxes proves the continuous popularity of the Sakti cult in India over the centuries. The very word Sakti denotes power. She can be seen through the different phenomenan of life. Durga Saptasati says that everyone has inherent power called Sakti, which is a manifestation of Para Sakti, the supreme goddess. In the Sakta scheme of cosmogonical evolution, the unmanifested prakarti alone existed before creation. OM NAMO BHAGAVATE PANDURANGAYA BALAJI VANI Volume 11, Issue 10 October, 2017 HARI OM In Month of September Navaraatri Durga Puja was carried out with great devotion in the Balaji Matha Temple at San Jose, headed by Peethadhipati Swami Narayananda. All of these nine days Sri Sri Chandi Parayan and Chandi Hom (fire ritual) was conducted in the temple premises by Swami Narayananda. Devotees were graced with Darshan of Maa Durga, Maha-Lakshmi and Devi Kanyaka Parameshwari in different attires. Sometimes she was Shakambhari Devi, appeasing the hunger of this Universe. Regally outfitted as Sri Sri Parambhattarika Lalita-Tripura-Sundari, Mother blessed Her devotees with Bhukti (satisfaction) and Mukti (salvation). Maa Siddhidaatri was venerated with Phoolangi seva (decoration of flowers) gracing the devotees with blissful happiness. Every evening prayers were conducted by Swamiji, with devotees chanting Mother's glory. This was accompanied by Kumari Ka - Puja (prayers to the living Goddess in the female child). Then the devotees enjoyed the performances of various local talents, of all age groups, and ended each festival day with preetibhoj. Swami Nityananda assisted in all the Poojas & Alankar. On September 30th, Vijaya Dashami, the concluding day of the puja, Swami Sri Durga Devi Pullangi Seva at Balaji Temple. Narayananda led the devotees into praying to the Mother Goddess as Maha- Kaali (Power of Universal Knowledge Tatvagnan-Shakti), Maha-Lakshmi (Power of Soul : Sadatmak-Shakti) and Maha-Saraswati (Power of Mind : SARVADĀ STHĀPANAṂ BUDDHEḤ ŚUDDHE BRAHMAṆI SARVADĀ | Chit-Shakti), seeking Her everlasting love and blessings. Armor of the Gods Page 2 Armor of the Gods We can wear the gods. Anyone can sit in the presence or field of a deity to connect with them, exchange energy, received gifts and insights, make offerings. This practice is common to spiritual systems. In Witchcraft it's called drawing down the moon, in Tantra it's called deity yoga, in Hellenistic ritual it's called theurgy or god-work, in Golden Dawn ceremonial it's called assumption of god-form. In all these practices you call a single deity. There is another practice of wearing the gods. This form maps multiple deities onto the human body. The effect of this practice is to build up an energy net in and around in the subtle body to protect the practitioner physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. In Tantra it's called nyasa, which means the act of placing a kavacam, a word translated into English as armor. I perform three specific practices. One comes from the Tantric Hindu tradition and is practiced today by millions of people. The second comes from the Kemetic tradition which is being revived in the African American community and by sincere Pagan and magical practitioners. -

Significance of Navratri
Significance of Navratri The 9 divine nights are significant with three days each devoted to worship of Ma Durga- the Goddess of Valour, Ma Lakshmi – the Goddess of Wealth and Ma Saraswati- the Goddess of Knowledge. The tenth day celebrated on 08 October is know as Vijay Dashmi (Vijay meaning victory and Dash means ten) is to worship, chant and pray to the mother giving thanks to her for showering her mercy upon us and to celebrate the victory that we have achieved over our enemies which as the vices contained within ourselves. One should make full use of these 10 days to take stock of one’s life and make changes to be a good, loving and caring person. Observing the period ritualistically and not wanting Mother Durga to assist and free us from her clutches of repeated birth, old age, disease and death will mean that this is a religious observance and will not benefit us in anyway whatsoever. The word Durga is derived from the word Durg which means prison house. Therefore the name Durga refers to that great personality who is in charge of and controller of the Karma of every human being on this planet. Our prayer to the mother should therefore be that she frees us from this prison so as to allow us to go back home, back to Godhead. She is compared to the warden of a prison who will recommend parole to that person who has asked to be forgiven for his offences and have made amends to lead a better life. -

The 4 Navaratri©s in 2021 Navaratri is a Hindu festival of worship of Devi Adi Para-Shakti and dance and festivities. The word Navaratri literally means nine nights in Sanskrit, nava meaning nine and ratri meaning nights. During these nine nights and ten days, nine forms of Shakti/Devi Durga are worshipped. It is commonly referred to as Dussehra in India. Navaratri is celebrated four times a year according to India©s seasons. They are Poushya/Magha Navaratri, Vasant Navaratri, Ashadha Navaratri, and Sharada MAHA Navaratri. Of these, the Sharada Navaratri and Vasant Navaratri are most important. Those that have not performed the Navaratra ceremony, how can they acquire riches in this world and acquire happiness and peace in their next? There is no other vow superior to this vow in this world© this vow is very holy and will bring unto you lots of happiness.º Devi devotees who abstain from animal sacrifice perform ªsymbolic BALIº with vegetables/fruits like bananas, cucumber, white pumpkin, nutmeg and sugar cane.
