Welcome to Dead by Dawn! It’s sound advice to be more afraid of the living than the dead. Sure, the dead can kill you, but at least they’re easy to spot. In this year’s programme too many of the monsters will smile when they meet you, and will still be smiling when they lock you in a meat freezer. Or encourage you onto a ledge. Or offer to share their martini. You could try politely declining their kind offer, see how that works out... Dead by Dawn is a discovery festival which exists to showcase potential and vibrant emerging talent, but also aims to screen the widest possible range of what can be described as horror both in feature and short form.

California State University, Monterey Bay Murder Music: Horror Film Soundtracks Throughout History Vincent Aragon Music and Performing Arts 6 May 2020 Abstract Horror films often rely heavily on their music to create a tense and frightening experience for their audience, and it is the composer's job to write a score that satisfies that requirement. Throughout film history, the methods composers utilize to achieve that goal differ across time due to various factors including available technology, allotted budget, and the norms and expectations of films at the time. This capstone paper explores the different approaches composers employed in writing horror soundtracks from the early 20th century to the modern-day, noting any significant shifts and common themes found in the music of popular horror themes.

Cover illustration: Silhouette of Maximilian Hell by unknown artist, probably dating from the early 1780s. (In a letter to Johann III Bernoulli in Berlin, dated Vienna March 25, 1780, Hell states that he is trying to have his silhouette made by “a person who is proficient in this.” The silhouette reproduced here is probably the outcome.) © Österreichische Nationalbibliothek.
