Challenge

Reach Plc had an ageing set up in place which consisted of 2 x 200kVA Riello MPS series that required battery changes. With this in mind, clamp readings were taken to find the efficiency of the infrastructure. This found that Reach were spending a lot on electricity as efficiency of the equipment was at 70%. A total cost of ownership was completed and we found that we could swap out the equipment with new and this would have a payback of 18 months, which run in line with Reach’s policy for payback on replacing equipment.

Finding a suitable time to change both of the systems was always going to be difficult as the units run 24/7 365 days a year. It was decided that the best time was during the day when everyone would be onsite and not at home. This would mean there were more staff available to deal with the disruption if any equipment did go down.

This new system will offer 10 year design life batteries along with a 3 year warranty on the UPS, which will give Reach Plc the peace of mind they were after for time to come.

Outcome

UPS Systems prevented a potentially catastrophic battery and UPS failure by successfully replacing the batteries and UPS units for two 200kVA units which had reached the end of their design life and has now improved the efficiency within the infrastructure. UPS Systems will respond to any future faults within 4 hours all year round, allowing Reach Plc to relax in the knowledge that the network will not be disrupted in the event of a power failure.
