T Sarà magari solo una sensazione, ma in questo autunno 2017 sembra di captare un’atmosfera positiva come da tempo non si sentiva attorno al cinema in Italia. Sarà perché la nuova Legge tanto attesa, con tutte le aspettative che ha innescato, sta finalmente entrando nella fase attuativa. Sarà perché la nuova Cinecittà, celebrati i suoi 80 anni, riparte riaccendendo sogni e visioni. Sarà perché per la prima volta da una decina d’anni a questa parte una giuria di Vene- zia ha osato premiare film che non faranno scappare il pubblico dai cinema. Sarà perché a Milano si è inaugurato il nuovo Palazzo del Cinema-Anteo e Fuoricine- ma ha raccolto migliaia di appassionati a sentir parlare di cinema e di film. Sarà perché anche dai festival minori arrivano segnali incoraggianti e postivi, con par- tecipazioni inattese e voglia di cinema che fluttua nell’aria. Sarà. Sarà che però manca ancora una cosa, per poter essere davvero ottimisti: la voglia di rischiare. Di crederci. Di provare a trattare il cinema non come una specie in via di estinzio- ne ma come un’opportunità. Come una risorsa su cui investire. Rischio è una paro- la quasi sconosciuta nella cultura della maggior parte degli operatori del settore. E invece bisognerebbe ripartire da lì. Sia in quantità, sia in qualità. C’è del nuovo, lì, non c’è dubbio. A patto di saper riconoscere quanto c’è di vecchio nel nuovo. SCENARI I siti e i blog italiani di cinema 4 - 5 E IL NUOVO ll’inizio, lo confesso, ero un poco diffidente. Mi aggira- A vo fra i blog di cinema che spuntavano sulla Rete come funghi porcini dopo una notte di pioggia, leggevo qua e là quelli che mi sembravano più interessanti e mi ritrovavo quasi sempre perplesso e ancor più diffidente di prima. Mi sembrava che i blog si assomigliassero un po’ tutti, e che riproponessero in pic- colo i difetti “cronici” della critica istituzionale: il narcisismo malce- lato, la sicumera, la convinzione che sia legittimo attribuire un valore oggettivo e assoluto al proprio soggettivo e personalissimo giudizio di valore. Raramente trovavo qualcosa che provasse a sperimentare forme diverse da quelle ormai consunte della recensione o della vi- deorecensione, come se i blog non riuscissero a non essere parassiti dell’organismo che cercavano di mettere in discussione (quello della “critica” canonica e istituzionalizzata). Ancor più raramente trovavo blogger capaci di sottrarsi alla congenita tentazione del critico di fare di sé un giudice inappellabile o addirittura un boia. Come se scrivere di cinema implicasse necessariamente l’emettere sentenze o il far ca- dere la ghigliottina sulla testa di un film. Poi, a poco a poco, ho cambiato idea. Meglio: sono cambiati i blog, sono cresciuti, hanno iniziato a praticare forme diverse. E sarebbe in- tellettualmente scorretto non prendere atto (e non dare atto pubbli- camente) di questa maturazione. Non è più vero che i blog si assomigliano tutti. Few, if any, critics and theorists are likely to dispute that The Man with the Movie Camera, Breathless, and Mulholland Drive are highly reflexive films; that the film within the film and breaking the proverbial ‘fourth wall’ are conventional reflexive devices; and that there are substantial differences (whether of kind or degree) between reflexive and non-reflexive films, styles, and their experiences. Beyond such general characterizations, however, one finds a marked diversity of views on the detailed workings of reflexivity as a form of signification, communication, and artistic expression. These include its specific effects on viewers; its historical and stylistic evolution; its relation to cinematic realism and illusionism; and the political and social critical dimensions of reflexivity. Over a number of decades film theorists have addressed these and related issues through the creation of more or less detailed typologies of reflexivity rooted in various, often implicit, ideas and assumptions concerning it. Matteo Ciccognani School of Business. University of Leicester. Abstract The paper analyses The Five Obstructions (Von Trier, Leth, 2003) a productionist metafilm that illuminates film production organisational process. A productionist metafilm is a reflexive work which expands on the processual dimension of filmmaking to the extent that the frontstage of production might be said to coincide, or tend to coincide, with its own backstage. In such a way, it provides a favourable observation spot of the filmmaking process over some of its material components of production and the role of authors and practitioners. Specifically, The Five Obstructions provides an organisational model of filmmaking which exceeds the canonical representations of mainstream cinema – but that also differs from other metacinematic examples - for its unique capability to frame the exhibition of the productive process as the main agent of the representation in its constitutive material aspects. Drawing on scholarship focusing on organisational performance, critical management studies and film studies, this article attempts to investigate the extent to which this audiovisual product can provide a contribution which exceeds the limits established by the domain of filmmaking. It is questioned whether it can also generate a deeper understanding of diverse work environments dynamics and promote organisational change. The Five Obstructions operates in this direction by inviting the participants to role-play, to exhibit their own role within the filmmaking process. In particular, this film focuses on issues related to co- performed production, leadership, self-management and disorganisation.

Based on a reconstruction and examination of its development from its foundation (with the publication of a manifesto in the form of ten commandments) through to its products (a full survey of which are presented here), this article offers a meaningful and not entirely uncritical snapshot of a conscious proposal of a low-cost production model in contemporary Spain. In our conclusion, we tie this film movement in with international debates about the viability of a low-cost approach in the context of a national film industry that has been left badly battered by the financial crisis that began in 2008.
