Brooklyn Bridge Park

A well kept Manhattan secret, this park offers an array of activities and cool venues.

TimeOut Magazine has ranked this park as a Top 50 attraction.

“Some city parks—Central and Prospect, most obviously—were built to replicate rustic fields and preserve serene woodland. Brooklyn Bridge Park, however, was not—and that’s precisely why it has become so popular in the almost three years since it debuted. The project has transformed a chunk of the Brooklyn waterfront into a nearly 85-acre expanse; several sections house unique attractions such as Jane’s Carousel, a restored 1920s merry-go-round, and riverside esplanades with gorgeous Manhattan views. Its latest addition, Pier 5, designed specifically for "active recreation"—sporting leagues and events —further cements the space as the city’s premier urban playground.” Click here to access more.

“Since I am one of Premier’s employees who commutes into NYC every day, I tend to fill up my suburban weekends on the local rivers. Canoeing, rafting, kayaking and tubing down a river offers the perfect way to enjoy the outdoors. The tri-state area offers river experiences that include all classes of rivers for beginners thru expert paddlers. Some of my favorite rivers are the Mouse and Hudson Rivers to the North - think above Albany NY, the Delaware River - think due West of NYC and the Oswego River down in the New Jersey Pine Barrens Forest – west of the Jersey Shore. I point out these rivers because each is unique with a different experience:

The Mouse and Hudson are fast running rivers with large rapids. You will raft or kayak with a guide and paddle on his commands to get the best experience and have the safest trip. Click here to access more.

The Delaware River offers all types of rafting, canoeing, kayaking and tubing. The river has several sections and each can be navigated by anyone wishing to enjoy the river. There are several companies but Kittitiny Canoe Company is the largest with the best service — (My brother Matthew worked at the Matamoras Base years ago). Click here to access more.

West of the Jersey Shore area is the NJ Pine Barrens with a picturesque Oswego River. This is a slow moving river with many twists and turns for any level canoe or kayaker. You will not believe you are in NJ when you paddle this river. Click here to access more.

Look for me...I’ll be out there with Daisy, my Wheaton Terrier.”

Happy Paddling!

World Cup Fever

World Cup Fever rocked Manhattan as restaurants and pubs were standing room only due to America’s growing interest in the World Cup. I am not sure if the success in the group of death had anything to do with the renowned interest but it certainly helped.

On a Tuesday afternoon I asked a client to meet me outside my office building and because it was a nice day we figured we would walk down the Manhattan streets and find a restaurant that appealed to us. As we walked by the local pubs we heard loud roars, clapping, groans and most of all “yelling” generally directed at the referees. There were a lot of “C’Mons” and other words that area not suitable for this newsletter but one thing was for sure, this game is evoking passion that only sports can find and New York is certainly the perfect nest to do so.

New York is the melting pot of the world embracing all walks of life and the cultures they bring. In any given neighborhood you can enjoy a mixture of different cuisines and nightlife born from cities all over the world. You can be in a Dutch restaurant watching the Netherlands play Mexico and cross the street and be in a Mexican restaurant watching the game -- the same game but two totally different vibes..

Soccer is a universal language in which we can all agree on. The glue that brings all nations together under the same set of rules for 90 minutes. The game’s tone is similar to an orchestra where you have some high notes and lull notes and you don’t know exactly when they will peak. What is not on the field is what is left in the locker room -- politics, historical conflict, wealth gaps and ideologies.

We had a great time that Tuesday -- we saw the United States play Germany and lose 1-0 but still advance to the next round. An afternoon filled with excitement, fear, patriotism and relief. All over a round ball trying to find its way into the net.

25th NYC Century Bike Tour Sunday, September 7th, 2014

100 miles on a bicycle? In one day? Around NYC? Seriously?

Whether you’re a hardcore cyclist or a casual weekend pedaler, the 2014 New York City Century Bike Tour is not to be missed. The diverse neighborhoods, the challenging course, and the camaraderie with fellow NYC “centurions” make this a one of a kind bike tour.

I’ve participated in the NYC Century Bike Tour for the past two years and managed to complete its 100 mile route both times. Be advised- I don’t recommend simply hopping on your bike and trying to ride 100 miles just for kicks. A century is cycling’s version of the marathon. Like any marathon, it’s not something to try and take on without proper preparation. You’ll need to train for the event, and understand your limits. The bright side is that on ride day you’ll see all of Manhattan’s boroughs except Staten Island. You’ll bike across the Brooklyn and Triboro Bridges. Talk about a cool way to see NYC in a totally different way! The conclusion of the event even features a fun Finish-Line Party and T-shirt giveaway in Central Park.

If you aren’t able to get enough “century” training in, not to worry. There are alternative distances of 75, 55, and 35 miles offered to suit a variety of tastes. Please be advised that there will be a cap of 7,000 total participants for the tour this year. So don’t dilly-dally.

Go Back To Top live music in "da boroughs" Kickin It: Live Concerts and Edgy Performances

Break away from the air conditioning and get outdoors to see some live music in NYC! The summertime lineups arrive full-fold as we sweat through the hottest quarter of the year.

Notable productions like SummerStage offer a great selection of outdoor — and mostly free — shows at various locations throughout the five boroughs. Unique, popular and classical genres of music are represented at different venues over the span of our Summer. This is great opportunity to expose yourself to popular musicians or to experience something cultural for the first time. Open spaces invite you to dance in places like Central Park in Manhattan, Queensbridge Park in Queens, and St. Mary’s Park in The Bronx. You can browse the listings here at a TimeOut New York link: Click here to access more.

Similar offerings are presented by the popular Celebrate Brooklyn! alliance. The Prospect Park band shell is a fresh-air performance venue that gives you a chance to get lively near the stage or lay out a blanket and relax in the grass. Free tickets are offered for reservations, so check out your options at the official website here: Click here to access more.

Be sure to show up early for any of these events. Free shows will attract the masses! Waiting one to three hours for entrance is not uncommon.

If a private experience is more of your style, I must endorse the Rocks Off Concert Cruise series. Climb aboard a mini cruise ship for a three-hour troll around Manhattan. Energetic or intensely psychedelic bands will play in the bow of the ship while bartenders sling cocktails at the cash bars. Get some fresh air above the deck and take in evening views of The Financial District, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and The Statue of Liberty. Go Back To Top in my opinion The Rockawegians Comeback

I am a resident of Rockaway Beach, Queens. I’ve taken to calling us “Rockawegians,” but some of my friends and neighbors object to this moniker. I figure that if I say it enough times, it will stick. Now that we’re in the thick of beach season, I want to give a shout-out to “The Rock” and its remarkable rise from the destruction of Hurricane Sandy that leveled our area just two years ago. We all remember the shocking images of devastation and despair. I know I will never forget the night of the deluge or the months that followed; including a month without power and six months without the use of an elevator. Regrettably, there are still glaring signs of Sandy’s aftermath. Sections of boardwalk are still missing, as well as a number of former residents- many who have since opted not to return.

Yet here we are in 2014, and Rockaway Beach is back! Throughout the area, there are hopeful signs of sustained recovery. Trendy new stores and restaurants have popped up, patronized by locals, visitors and surfers. I am always intrigued by the throngs of surfers who migrate to our area each July. Many arrive by conventional means; in SUVs with 2-4 surfboards strapped to their roofs. Others arrive by subway. I must say, surfboards on subways always make for an odd pairing. And perhaps most peculiar are the men and women transporting their boards to the suds by bicycle, using an odd side-mount contraption (pictured below). Regardless of their mode of transportation, people are coming back to the Rockaways in numbers for sun & fun- and food! Legendary Rockaway Taco’s fish tacos are a local standard. Be prepared to wait for these tasty morsels- the line can stretch around the corner on hot summer days. I don’t mind the wait. The people & tattoo art watching is well worth it. Click here for more access.

For a more traditional indoor / outdoor dining setting, check out Thai Rock (link). In addition to its delectable Thai fare, they typically feature live music during summer nights. It’s situated near the Cross Bay Bridge and offers picturesque views of Jamaica Bay. If the dance or lounge scenes are more to your taste, check out The Bungalow Bar (link); made famous by the hit TV Show: “Bar Rescue.” In addition, the tavern at the new Playland Hotel (link) has become a summer hotspot to dance or just chill.

Of course there are many more quaint and peculiar places to eat and shop in Rockaway Beach. Oh, I almost forgot- there’s also a great BEACH nearby!

A rollicking, partying beach town. All accessible from Manhattan via subway. Who knew?

People around the city still ask me: “Have things gotten any better out there yet?”

Speaking for my fellow “Rockawegians” – the answer is an emphatic “Yes!”

Hope to see you in “The Rock!”

Have a great summer!
