AKA United Nations is superbly situated on East 46th Street between Second and Third Avenues, equidistant from the distinctive UN headquarters complex to the East and the energized business district surrounding Grand Central Terminal to the West, where corporate giants such as Pfizer and JPMorgan Chase are based. Set in a community with an international flair—courtesy the thousands of diplomats working at the UN—this completely modernized high– rise of just 91 tranquil one–bedroom suites is a relaxing sanctuary at the end of a harried day. Two blocks East is the United Nations Headquarters, a distinctive complex in New York City that has served as the headquarters of the United Nations since its completion in 1950. It is located on spacious grounds overlooking the East River. Though it is in New York City, the land occupied by the United Nations Headquarters is considered international territory. The United Nations Headquarters was constructed in New York City in 1949 and 1950 beside the East River, on seventeen acres of land purchased from the foremost New York real estate developer of the time, William Zeckendorf. This purchase was arranged by Nelson Rockefeller, after an initial offer of placing it on the Rockefeller family estate of Kykuit was rejected as being too isolated from Manhattan. The $8.5 million purchase was then funded by his father, John D. Rockefeller, Jr., who donated it to the City. The lead architect for the building was the real estate firm of Wallace Harrison, the personal architectural adviser for the family. The complex includes a number of major buildings. While the Secretariat Tower is most predominantly featured in depictions of the headquarters, it also includes the domed General Assembly Hall, the Dag Hammarskjöld Library, as well as the Conference and Visitors Center, which is situated between the General Assembly and Secretariat buildings, and can be seen only from the FDR Drive or the East River. 12

AKA United Nations is also just several blocks from Grand Central Terminal. Built by the New York Central Railroad (for which it was named) in the heyday of American long-distance passenger trains, it is the largest train station in the world by number of platforms: 44, with 67 tracks along them. It now serves commuters traveling on the Metro-North Railroad to Westchester, Putnam, and Dutchess counties in New York State, and Fairfield and New Haven counties in Connecticut. Although it has been properly called “Grand Central Terminal” for a century, many people continue to refer to it as “Grand Central Station.” Technically, that is the name of the nearby post office, as well as the name of a previous rail station on the site. Additionally, the railroad term “station” is inapplicable to the site, as that would mean that trains pass through on their way elsewhere. The proper term related to its function is “terminal,” because trains terminate their journeys there. in–suite furnishings 13
