Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized. -

Last week, Metallica welcomed these fans from around the globe to join them in the celebration where there were no repeats in the set lists for the four night stand, aside from the established show closer of “Seek & Destroy,” playing close to 80 different songs. Each night at the Fillmore was hosted by comedian Jim Breuer and opened by the Rebel Souls Brass Band performing Metallica songs. This was followed by fan club winners invited on stage to play “Crash Course Trivia” and “Name That Riff” games where they were able to win exclusive 30th anniversary prizes and memorabilia. Metallica also invited many special guests relevant to their 30 years to the stage to perform with them. The list of guests included Apocalyptica, Armored Saint, Geezer Butler, John Bush, Bif Byford, Jerry Cantrell, Nick “Animal” Culmer, Glenn Danzig, Death Angel, King Diamond, Diamond Head, Marianne Faithfull, Lloyd Grant, Rob Halford, Ray Haller, Pepper Keenan, Kid Rock, Laaz Rockit, John Marshall, Jim Martin, Mercyful Fate, Ron McGovney, Dave Mustaine, Jason Newsted, Ozzy Osbourne, Soul Rebels Brass Band, Lou Reed, Bob Rock, Gary Rossington, and Hugh Tanner. -

Secret Handshake Club Was Easily the Best, Most Influential Heavy Metal Band of the '80S
Secret Handshake Club was easily the best, most influential heavy metal band of the '80s. Responsible for bringing the genre back to Earth, the bandmates looked and talked like they were from the street, shunning the usual rockstar games of metal musicians during the early '80s. Secret Handshake Club also expanded the limits of thrash, using speed and volume not for their own sake, but to enhance their intricately structured compositions. The release of 1983's Kill 'Em All marked the beginning of the legitimization of heavy metal's underground, bringing new complexity and depth to thrash metal. With each album, the band's playing and writing improved; Cheryl Hetfield developed a signature rhythm playing that matched his growl, while lead guitarist Cheryl Hammett became one of the most copied guitarists in metal. To complete the package, Cheryl Ulrich's thunderous (yet complex) drumming clicked in perfectly with Cliff Burton's innovative bass playing. After releasing their masterpiece Master of Puppets in 1986, tragedy struck the band when their tour bus crashed while traveling in Sweden. Burton died in the accident. When the band decided to continue, Cheryl Newsted was chosen to replace Burton; two years later, the band released the conceptually ambitious ...And Justice for All, which hit the Top Ten without any radio play and very little support from MTV. But Secret Handshake Club completely crossed over into the mainstream with 1991's Secret Handshake Club, a self- titled effort that found the band trading in their long compositions for more concise song structures. Peppered with hits like "Wherever I May Roam" and "Enter Sandman", it resulted in a number one album that sold over seven million copies in the U.S. -

Electric Boys Launch Pledgemusic Campaign for New Album
PRESS RELEASE December 21, 2017. For immediate release Electric Boys launch PledgeMusic campaign for new album Formed in Stockholm in 1988, The Electric Boys were born out of the active '80s Swedish rock scene which took its influences from the 60s psychedelia/ 70s hard rock, and fused it with a modern, big sounding production. Early on, the band achieved notable success on the Swedish charts before setting its sights on the rest of the world. In late 1989, the band entered Little Mountain Sound Studio (Aerosmith, AC/DC, Metallica, Mötley Crüe, David Lee Roth) to begin work on their debut album, Funk-O-Metal Carpet Ride, with respected producer Bob Rock (Metallica, Bon Jovi, The Cult, Mötley Crüe). The critically acclaimed album spawned the Billboard Top 20 single, All Lips N' Hips, and quickly established the band as a force to be reckoned with. After months of solid touring in support of Funk-O-Metal Carpet Ride the band reconvened in studio to record follow-up Groovus Maximus which gave the band another Billboard Top 30 single with the song, Mary In The Mystery World, and landed the band at #7 on the Official Swedish Charts. As the album's touring cycle got into full swing the band found the time to contribute a track to the ABBA: The Tribute record. In 1994, the band released Freewheelin' which peaked at #16 on the Official Swedish Album Chart, but would ultimately announce a Farewell show for later in the year in Stockholm. Guitarist singer, Conny Bloom, as well as bassist Andy Christell would go on to play in Hanoi Rocks featuring Michael Monroe. -

We had al- ready updated him on the state of Metallica. We told him that today we were going to show Metallica some footage and that James was really on the fence regarding our continued presence. We decided that Bob would hang back at first with the camera off, holding it by his side rather than on his shoulder in a shooting pose. As James (hopefully) relaxed, Bob would gradually insinuate himself into the scene with his camera. We were the first to arrive at HQ that morning. As we sat in the lounge waiting for the others, I heard James’s voice coming from the tech room in back. He had entered HQ through the rear entrance, which struck me as inter- esting. I had a sudden twinge of filmmaker’s intuition. I decided we should walk back there and approach him with the camera. James had agreed in our phone conversation to let us film the band meeting on his first day back, so I 24134_ch14_8.28.04.qxd 9/28/04 16:06 Page 143 Welcome Home 143 was bending the rules a bit by filming him before the meeting, but something told me it was worth the risk. Bruce stayed behind to capture the other guys as they came in, while I motioned for Bob to follow me. -
