Metallica Celebrate 30 METALLICA CELEBRATE 30-YEAR ANNIVERSARY AT THE FILLMORE IN SAN FRANCISCO WITH SPECIAL GUESTS OZZY OSBOURNE, DAVE MUSTAINE, JASON NEWSTED, LOU REED, MARIANNE FAITHFULL, KID ROCK, AND MORE BAND TO RELEASE BEYOND MAGNETIC EP FEATURING FOUR PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED SONGS EXCLUSIVELY ON ITUNES FOR ONE WEEK LOS ANGELES, CA – December 12, 2011 – Metallica celebrated its 30th anniversary as a band last week, performing four shows at the Fillmore Theatre in San Francisco, CA, exclusively for members of their fan club, the Metallica Club. In August, Metallica Club members around the world were able to enter a lottery for a chance to purchase tickets to all the Fillmore shows at a cost of $19.81 for a four-pack of tickets to all of the shows. Single show tickets were $6. All four of the shows immediately sold out. Last week, Metallica welcomed these fans from around the globe to join them in the celebration where there were no repeats in the set lists for the four night stand, aside from the established show closer of “Seek & Destroy,” playing close to 80 different songs. Each night at the Fillmore was hosted by comedian Jim Breuer and opened by the Rebel Souls Brass Band performing Metallica songs. This was followed by fan club winners invited on stage to play “Crash Course Trivia” and “Name That Riff” games where they were able to win exclusive 30th anniversary prizes and memorabilia. Metallica also invited many special guests relevant to their 30 years to the stage to perform with them. The list of guests included Apocalyptica, Armored Saint, Geezer Butler, John Bush, Bif Byford, Jerry Cantrell, Nick “Animal” Culmer, Glenn Danzig, Death Angel, King Diamond, Diamond Head, Marianne Faithfull, Lloyd Grant, Rob Halford, Ray Haller, Pepper Keenan, Kid Rock, Laaz Rockit, John Marshall, Jim Martin, Mercyful Fate, Ron McGovney, Dave Mustaine, Jason Newsted, Ozzy Osbourne, Soul Rebels Brass Band, Lou Reed, Bob Rock, Gary Rossington, and Hugh Tanner. Each night the finale featured all the evening’s guests joining the band on stage to perform “Seek and Destroy.” This week, Metallica will release the Beyond Magnetic EP featuring four previously unreleased songs, which will be available exclusively on iTunes in North America for one week. After that week, the songs will be available from all digital retailers. Around the world, it will be available on iTunes and other digital retailers. These four songs were originally released as a gift to Metallica’s Metallica Club members to enjoy immediately after the band played them. “During the Death Magnetic album sessions in 2007 and 2008, we originally recorded 14 songs. When it came time to pick the songs for the final album, we decided on 10 songs that you’ve all come to know over the last three years,” said the members of Metallica. “Some of you may have heard bits and pieces of those other songs on ‘Mission Metallica’ (remember ‘Mission Metallica’?!) or heard rumors about them during the recording process, and wondered, ‘What ever happened to those other four songs???.’ We kept them in the vault and decided to pull them just for this special celebration, so here are the four leftover tracks from the Death Magnetic sessions. They are ROUGH mixes, unfinished to their original degree of mixing from March ’08. These four songs were released as gift to our closest fans, the members of our Fan Club, to enjoy. Now they're being made available to you.” BEYOND MAGNETIC TRACKLISTING 1. Hate Train 2. Just A Bullet Away 3. Hell And Back 4. Rebel Of Babylon Metallica’s 30th anniversary celebration ended late Saturday night with drummer Lars Ulrich telling fans to listen for news to come in mid-January 2012 about something very special coming in June. About Metallica: Formed in 1981 by drummer Lars Ulrich and guitarist and vocalist James Hetfield, Metallica have become one of the most influential and commercially successful rock bands in history, having sold 100 million albums worldwide and playing to millions of fans the world over. They have scored several multi-platinum albums, including 1991’s Metallica (commonly referred to as “The Black Album”), which is the best selling album in history of Soundscan scanning almost 15.7 million albums in the United States alone. Their latest album, Death Magnetic, was certified platinum just six weeks after it debuted atop the Billboard Top 200 Album chart in October 2008. Metallica have also garnered numerous awards and accolades, including nine Grammy Awards, two American Music Awards, and multiple MTV Video Music Awards, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in 2009. # # # www.metallica.com www.facebook.com/metallica www.twitter.com/metallica www.youtube.com/metallica For further information, set lists or just a good time, please contact Brian Bumbery, Sam Citron and Ibo Cevik at BB Gun Press on 323.904.9094 or email [email protected] / [email protected] / [email protected]. .

PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

Lusty, “Rocking the Canon” LATCH, Vol. 6, 2013, pp. 101-138 ROCKING THE CANON: HEAVY METAL AND CLASSICAL LITERATURE By Heather L. Lusty University of Nevada, Las Vegas While metalheads around the world embrace the engaging storylines of their favorite songs, the influence of canonical literature on heavy metal musicians does not appear to have garnered much interest from the academic world. This essay considers a wide swath of canonical literature from the Bible through the Science Fiction/Fantasy trend of the 1960s and 70s and presents examples of ways in which musicians adapt historical events, myths, religious themes, and epics into their own contemporary art. I have constructed artificial categories under which to place various songs and albums, but many fit into (and may appear in) multiple categories. A few bands who heavily indulge in literary sources, like Rush and Styx, don’t quite make my own “heavy metal” category. Some bands that sit 101 Lusty, “Rocking the Canon” LATCH, Vol. 6, 2013, pp. 101-138 on the edge of rock/metal, like Scorpions and Buckcherry, do. Other examples, like Megadeth’s “Of Mice and Men,” Metallica’s “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” and Cradle of Filth’s “Nymphetamine” won’t feature at all, as the thematic inspiration is clear, but the textual connections tenuous.1 The categories constructed here are necessarily wide, but they allow for flexibility with the variety of approaches to literature and form. A segment devoted to the Bible as a source text has many pockets of variation not considered here (country music, Christian rock, Christian metal).
