The Holy See MESSAGE OF JOHN PAUL II TO THE POOR CLARES FOR THE 750th ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEATH OF SAINT CLARE Dearest Sisters,1. The 11th of August 1253 marked the end of the earthly pilgrimage of St Clare of Assisi, disciple of St Francis and foundress of your Order, known as the Poor Sisters or Poor Clares, that today counts, in its various branches, around 900 monasteries scattered over the five continents. Seven hundred and fifty years from her death, the commemoration of this great Saint continues to be keenly felt in the hearts of the faithful; I am pleased on this occasion to send to your religious Family a cordial thought and an affectionate greeting.On such an important jubilee commeration, St Clare urges all to understand in a much deeper way the value of the vocation, which is a gift given from God, intended to bear fruit. Concerning this, she wrote in her Testament: "Among the other gifts that we have received and do daily receive from our benefactor, the Father of mercies, and for which we must express the deepest thanks to the glorious Father of Christ, there is our vocation, for which, all the more by the way of its being more perfect and greater, do we owe the greatest thanks to Him. Therefore, the Apostle [writes]: "Know your vocation'" (2-4).2. Born in Assisi between the years 1193-1194 of the noble family Di Favarone of Offreduccio, St Clare received, especially from her mother Ortolana, a solid Christian education. Illuminated by divine grace, she let herself be drawn to the new form of evangelical life initiated by St Francis and his companions, and decided, in her turn, to embark on a more radical following of Christ. -

Claret speaks of hisA companions as those who have received the same spirit that encouraged him (cf. Aut 489). We are Claretians because we have also received that same spirit to proclaim the Gospel today. A closer contact with our Founder and with the history of the Congregation will help us fan the flames of our missionary spirit and find urgent, timely and effective ways to carry out our mission in the times in which we are living. Fidelity to our roots and openness to new realities, demand a fruitful relationship with the elder Claretians who walked before us. Pope Francis, addressing consecrated men and women, reminded us of the importance of this mutual relationship: For if the young are called to open new doors, the elderly hold the keys. An institute remains youthful by going back to its roots, by listening to its older members. -

(For that retreat, almost fifty priests from all over the United States had gathered for a week within the Month of Nazareth, in which a smaller number of priests were participating for the full month.) This mini-history is to complement A New Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Msgr. Bryan Karvelis of Brooklyn, New York (RIP), and the American Experience of Jesus Caritas Fraternities by Father Dan Danielson of Oakland, California. It proposes to record the beginnings of the Jesus Caritas Fraternities in the USA over its first decade of existence from 1963 to 1973, and it will mark the fifth anniversary of the beatification of the one who inspired them, Little Brother Blessed Charles de Foucault. It purports to be an “acts of the apostles” of some of the Jesus Caritas Fraternity prophets and apostles in the USA, a collective living memory of this little- known dynamic dimension of the Church in the United States. It is not an evaluation of the Fraternity, much less a road map for its future growth and development. -

ROME 2015 IV SUPERIORS GENERAL 1952-1988 BROTHERS JOSAPHAT 1952-1964 V INTRODUCTION With great joy I present to all the partners in our mission – brothers, laypeople, and others – the history of our Superiors Gen- eral during the period from 1952 to 1988: Brothers Josaphat (Joseph Vanier), Jules (Gaston Ledoux), Maurice Ratté and Jean- Charles Daigneault. This history is meant as a remembrance, a grateful recognition, and an encouragement. In the first place, it is meant as a remem- brance, profoundly rooted in our spirit and in our heart, full of es- teem toward each one of them. We remember them especially for their human and spiritual greatness and their closeness to God. We recall their remarkable service of authority in the animation of their brothers and in the revitalization of the prophetic mission of our In- stitute on behalf of young people, particularly those most in need. Calling to mind the lives and the works of our brothers, we thank the God of all goodness for the magnificent gifts which he placed in each of them. In doing so, we recognize the evangelical wisdom of our protagonists, who throughout their life knew how to multiply the talents they had received. Our brothers experienced the joy of feeling loved by God. He wanted them to know the depth of his divine love toward all hu- manity and toward each one of them personally. -

THE RELATIONSHIP OF THE LAY CAMILLIAN FAMILY WITH THE ORDER OF CAMILLIANS AND THE CHURCH Rome, 16 October 2018 Fr. Angelo Brusco Introduction The prophecy of St. Camillus who predicted the spread throughout the world of the little plant of the Order that he had founded has also been fulfilled as regards the Lay Camillian Family (LCF). Indeed, today the LCF is present in all the continents of the world, multiplying the number of arms stretched out towards those who find themselves going through the difficult season of suffering. The pathway that has led this association to the point at which it is today is very variegated and has been conditioned by numerous factors of a socio- cultural and religious character. My paper does not have the goal of addressing in a detailed way the history of the Lay Camillian Family, which, indeed, has already been the subject of numerous articles, including mine, even though we still do not have a systematic analysis of the history of the LCF. In a necessary reference to its history, I will thus confine myself to referring solely to the events that help us to understand the relationship of this association with the Order of Camillians and the Church. The Relationship with the Order of Camillians Father Mario Vanti, the most authoritative historian of our Institute, wrote that within the Order of Camillians an ‘almost congenital’ need has been present to aggregate lay people to the exercise of its apostolic mission. This need was perceived as early as the beginnings of the Institute, as is attested to by the Bull that founded the Order, Illius qui pro gregis , which was emanated in 1591 by Gregory XIV. -

The Campaign for Senior Jesuit Healthcare Midwest Jesuits Executive Summary With Others. For Others. The Campaign for Senior Jesuit Healthcare is an umbrella campaign to meet the needs of senior and infirm Jesuits today and into the future. The $25 million campaign will raise the corpus of the Midwest Jesuits Senior and Infirm Fund to a sustainable critical value to support a historically high number of senior Jesuits requiring care over the next 15–25 years and beyond. Because community is central to Jesuit life, the campaign is designed to provide healthcare in a caring community environment. The USA Midwest Province is fortunate to have two Jesuit communities that serve our senior and infirmed Jesuits: Colombiere Jesuit Community in Clarkston, MI, and St. Camillus Jesuit Community, just west of Milwaukee. Colombiere is owned and operated by the Jesuits. The Colombiere Center was renovated during the 1990s and is staffed to care for 50–60 senior Jesuits in need of assisted living, skilled nursing, and memory care. St. Camillus is owned and operated by the Camillians, a religious order whose charism is to provide healthcare for the sick and elderly. Since 1992, senior Jesuits have lived in community on the St. Camillus health care campus. The current Jesuit community of 50–60 priests and brothers is in a hospital building that was constructed in 1932. In addition to the Jesuit community, the St. Camillus campus includes 700 additional living units for independent, assisted living, skilled nursing, and memory care. In 2014, the Jesuits established a committee to study the future senior care needs of the new USA Midwest Province, which was formed on June 5, 2017. -

From this information, the NRRO calculated the extent to which a community is adequately funded for retirement.
