When he was only 11years old he moved away from home to begin training with World & Olympic Coach, Peter Burrows. His first trip to US National Championships was at the age of 15, and by 1991 was part of the National Team in the Senior Division (when he earned a 5th-place finish at US Championships). At the Skate America International Competition later that year he landed his first triple axel in competition, and in 1993 Michael was standing on the podium when he captured the country’s bronze medal! For the next two seasons Michael was a US World Team. Over Michael’s competitive career he won numerous qualifying and international competitions including: the World University Games, the US Olympic Festival, the Norway International (twice), the Tropee De France, and the Nebelhorn Trophy (Germany). As a professional Michael has been a lead principal performer for Holiday on Ice, Broadway on Ice (National Tour), Disney on Ice (World Tour), Snoopy’s Endless Summer, and Celebration on Ice and Spellbound on Ice (Hong Kong). Michael originated the male soloist role in The Holiday Ice Spectacular 2008 and is thrilled to be rejoining the show for the 5th tour in 2014! The primary objective of this association is to foster greater interest in the sport of Figure Skating in general and further develop its four disciplines of Singles, Pairs, Ice Dance and Synchronised Skating in particular. In this vein, a primary objective of this past year was to implement the finalised Long Term Participant Development Plan (LTPDP) for SAFSA which was presented to the membership at the Awards and Draw Ceremony held at the 2012 National Championships and developed by the National Technical Committee (NTC) in conjunction with the South African Professional Skaters Union (SAPSU) and the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) and Dr Istvan Balyi.

Brazil and the Philippines will be represented for the first time in the figure skating event at Olympic Winter Games. The traditional fall event Nebelhorn Trophy was the ISU designated senior international figure skating qualifying competition as it was in 2009. Australia, Israel, Romania, Philippines, Ukraine, Italy earn Olympic spots for Men Athletes from Australia, Israel, Romania, Philippines, Ukraine and Italy earned the six Olympic spots for Men. Japan’s Nobunari Oda took the gold medal followed by Jason Brown (USA) and Jeremy Ten of Canada. Oda led after the Short Program with an excellent performance to “Cotton Club” that included the only quadruple toeloop of the day (87.34 points). The 26-year-old followed up with a quad-triple toeloop combination as well as seven more triple jumps in his Free Skating to “Wilhelm Tell” (175.64 points) and posted a new personal best total score of 262.98 points. “I was very focused on my first quad and when I landed it I felt relieved.
