  • Jack London the Mutiny of the « Elsinore »
JACK LONDON THE MUTINY OF THE « ELSINORE » 2008 – All rights reserved Non commercial use permitted THE MUTINY OF THE ELSINORE by Jack London CHAPTER I From the first the voyage was going wrong. Routed out of my hotel on a bitter March morning, I had crossed Baltimore and reached the pier- end precisely on time. At nine o'clock the tug was to have taken me down the bay and put me on board the Elsinore, and with growing irritation I sat frozen inside my taxicab and waited. On the seat, outside, the driver and Wada sat hunched in a temperature perhaps half a degree colder than mine. And there was no tug. Possum, the fox-terrier puppy Galbraith had so inconsiderately foisted upon me, whimpered and shivered on my lap inside my greatcoat and under the fur robe. But he would not settle down. Continually he whimpered and clawed and struggled to get out. And, once out and bitten by the cold, with equal insistence he whimpered and clawed to get back. His unceasing plaint and movement was anything but sedative to my jangled nerves. In the first place I was uninterested in the brute. He meant nothing to me. I did not know him. Time and again, as I drearily waited, I was on the verge of giving him to the driver. Once, when two little girls--evidently the wharfinger's daughters-- went by, my hand reached out to the door to open it so that I might call to them and present them with the puling little wretch.

  • Tool Identification Guide
Subject: ______________________ Name: _______________________ Section: ____ Period: ____ Date: __________________, 201__ TOOL IDENTIFICATION GUIDE Production: Jenny Liang 2015, Kivanc Yildiz 2010 Drawings: Ruby Qu, Ann Ke, Judy Liu & Karina Wu 2013 Chantal Lo 2010, Isadora Kostic 2012 First published 2010 Revised & Expanded 2012, 2015 Electronics & Robotics Sir Winston Churchill Secondary Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada 06.16.2015 Why and How A knowledge of tool and instrument names will enhance your success in electronics and improve your life. Although tool identification quizzes were standard fifty years ago in all technical studies subjects, today they have been largely abandoned. Mastering this information is fun and fulfilling. In a secondary school such as ours, where the large majority speak English as a second language, this unit is especially valuable. Our guide groups tools by use: bending, clamping, cutting… The drawings appear alphabetically since students report that this approach aids memorization. A practice quiz booklet accompanies the guide. Names are replaced by blank lines. Students prepare for the quiz by testing themselves. During the actual quiz the tools and instruments are held aloft and shown randomly. Simultaneously, the teacher records the answer on an overhead projector transparency. Students mark each others quiz. Background This booklet first appeared in 2010 and underwent extensive revision and expansion in 2015. Six student artists generously contributed drawings. Thirty-nine drawings by Ruby Qu are included. Chantal Lo made a substantial contribution. Ann Ke, Judy Liu and Karina Wu also contributed. A separate electronic file of Ruby Qu’s full size drawings in 8.5 inch by 11 inch format is available at www.swcelectronics.com.
