Ears are alert and small, nostrils are open and flared, and the eyes are large. The neck is short and muscular. The body is short with developed muscles and well-sprung ribs. The outer hairs of the mane are white while the center hairs are dark, usually black. The mane is typically cut short so it stands, showing the curve of the neck. Color Pattern: 90% of Norwegian Fjords are brown dun, the remaining 10% are red, gray, pale gold, or yellow dun. They always have a dorsal stripe running from the forelock down the neck through the middle of the mane, across the back and into the tail. Norwegian Fjord’s have primitive markings on their legs and may also have dark stripes over their withers. List of horse breeds 1 List of horse breeds This page is a list of horse and pony breeds, and also includes terms used to describe types of horse that are not breeds but are commonly mistaken for breeds. While there is no scientifically accepted definition of the term "breed,"[1] a breed is defined generally as having distinct true-breeding characteristics over a number of generations; its members may be called "purebred". In most cases, bloodlines of horse breeds are recorded with a breed registry. However, in horses, the concept is somewhat flexible, as open stud books are created for developing horse breeds that are not yet fully true-breeding. Registries also are considered the authority as to whether a given breed is listed as Light or saddle horse breeds a "horse" or a "pony". There are also a number of "color breed", sport horse, and gaited horse registries for horses with various phenotypes or other traits, which admit any animal fitting a given set of physical characteristics, even if there is little or no evidence of the trait being a true-breeding characteristic. Other recording entities or specialty organizations may recognize horses from multiple breeds, thus, for the purposes of this article, such animals are classified as a "type" rather than a "breed". This is my last article as President of our merry band and I must admit that I have had a blast serving. Fjord owners in general are nice folks but those Hof the Midwest Club are a definitely a cut above the rest. We have seen a busy two years. Ones that have seen the club continue to grow and prosper. We always seem to have a great deal of work ahead but it is, and always has been,good honest work. The kind that makes you feel good at the end of the day. The new Executive Committee will be a good one with lots of experience and leadership under its belt. Look for more good things to come. I only ask that you support and stand behind Suzie as you have me. It makes a great deal of difference when the going gets rough. Well, that's enough foolishness for now. The Norwegian Fjord: A Horse for All Ages By Melanie Huggett “The eyes should be like the mountain lakes on a midsummer evening, big and bright. A bold bearing of the neck like a lad from the mountains on his way to his beloved. Well-defined withers like the contours of the mountains set against an evening sky. The temperament as lively as a waterfall in spring, and still good natured.” – Norwegian description of the Fjord horse The Norwegian Fjord is considered one of the oldest pure breeds of horse. While they bear a striking resemblance to the Asiatic wild horse or Przewalski horse, they are in fact more closely related to the European wild horse, the Tarpan, as the Przewalski horse has 66 chromosomes while both the Fjord and the Tarpan have 64. It is believed that the original Fjord horse migrated to Norway and was domesticated over 4000 years ago. Archeological evidence suggests that the Fjord horse has been selectively bred for over 2000 years, first by the Vikings around 1200 BC. Rune stone carvings in Norway, many of fighting stallions, show images of horses recognizable as Fjords. The Vikings took their Fjords, which they used as war mounts, in their travels to Scotland, Iceland, and elsewhere. In these lands the Fjord influenced the Highland Pony and the Icelandic Horse. Characterization of native Nordic Farm Animal breeds - State of knowledge, 8.12.2015 The aim of this document is to provide a list of references outlining the current extent of characterization, both phenotypic and genetic, of native Nordic farm animal breeds. Google scholar was used to search for any scientiﬁc publications, including student theses and reports, on Nordic breeds of the main farm animal species: cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, chicken, dog and horse. The table below lists the breed names that were used as search keys. When present in the table, both the English as well as the original breed name were employed. By Susan Zimmerman “ our horse is waiting for you,” says a Norwegian friend who is fixing me up on my first-ever equine blind date. Well, it’s the Ytruth,inamannerofspeaking.I’minNorwaytogetthelowdown on the country’s famous Fjord horses and had requested help meeting a steed so I could get the story straight from the horse’s mouth. Although it would probably have been easier rounding up a horse owner to talk to on the west side of the Atlantic (the United States has some 5,200 registered Fjord horses, almost as many as Norway’s 6,000), but because the breed’s official mother country is Norway, I wanted my encounter with one of the world’s oldest and purest horse breeds to be on its own turf. Seabourn Club Herald Volume 17 • Number 1 15 The Norwegian Fjord horse is believed to have migrated to Norway more Randall Hyman than 4,000 years ago. This stocky draft breed, which is just two chromosomes shy of being related to the Przewalski but is linked to the Tarpan, still bears several vestiges of its primitive wild horse past. A dark dorsal stripe running from the forelock, down the middle of the mane, along the back and into the tail is its most telltale mark. Other remnants of the Fjord’s ancient history are the zebra stripes on the forelegs and brown dun color. While the majority of Norway’s Fjords come from the west coast – where fjords and mountains are the keywords – they are found all over the country.

A- THE BASIS FOR BREEDING AND JUDGING FJORD HORSES The History of Norwegian Fjord Horse Breeding and the The Beginning of Organized Breeding As mentioned in the chapter “A Short History of the Breed”, there have been Fjord Horses in Norway since prehistoric times, but organized breeding formally started between 1840 and 1850. In 1843 it was decided to found a government stud farm at Hjerkinn on the Dovre mountains at a height of 1000 metres above sea level. Generally, the plan was to improve Norwegian breeding . The Fjord was used on the farm for different tasks, logging and timber in the winter, and harvesting in the summer. The Fjord was also used as a packhorse and in lighter driving, for instance to church on Sunday. It was used extensively as a post horse and for the transport of goods. A stallion and six mares of the "original Norwegian breed", the Fjord, were purchased by the state as a base for the stud at Hjerkinn. Little was known about the genetics of colour. As in that time uls dun was very popular (statistic shows; between 1857 - 79 48,0% of the approved stallions were uls dun and between 1860 - 79 46,8% of the registered mares were uls dun) all this breeding stock was uls dun. Of the 32 foals born on the stud, 15 were white with blue eyes, showing up dramatically what happens by mating within this colour, but without anybody under- standing why this happened. So because of this and the fact that the stud was poorly managed it was decided to close down the stud.

Hippology Introduction Chapter 3: Breeds Shire: *The Shire horse is a draft breed that originated in England. *This breed comes many colors, but most prominently black, bay, and gray. *Mares usually stand about 16 hands, and stallions about 17 hands. *One distinguishing feature is that they have long white stockings with long hairs known as feathers. *This breed is a very popular pulling horse. They were originally used for plowing and pulling the ale carts to the breweries, but now have many uses. *Ideally this breed should have: - a long and lean head with large eyes - a long, arched, muscular, neck - a wide and deep shoulder and chest -a short, strong back -long, wide hindquarters -silky, and straight feathering, but not in excess *Shires are known to at risk for developing chromic progressive lymphedema. *Goliath, a Shire, held the Guiness Book of World Record’s record for tallest horse at 19.0 hans until his death in 2001. In 1848 a 21.2 hand horse named Mammoth was also thought to be a Shire. Clydesdale: *The Clydesdale is a draft breed that originated from Scotland, in that area named such. *These horses are often bay in color with white markings( thought to be caused by sabino genetics) but can also come in roan, black, grey, and chestnut. They have extensive feathering that goes further up the legs than seen in Shires. *Clydesdales stand about 16 to 18 hands, and weight about 1,800 to 2,000 pounds with some of the mature males surpassing these averages. *The breed was originally used for agriculture and hauling and is still used for pulling purposes today, along with other varied uses.
