Ice in the Pines 2016

Open Non Qualifying Competition

Flagstaff Club

August 20 and 21, 2016

Entry Deadline 9:00 pm Wednesday, July 13, 2016

Chief Referee: Trish Wilkins

This event is a standard U.S. Figure Skating Nonqualifying Competition Ice in the Pines 2016 – page 2

Ice in the Pines will be conducted in accordance with the rules and regulations of U.S. Figure Skating, as set forth in the current rulebook, as well as any pertinent updates which have been posted on the U.S. Figure Skating website.

This competition is open to all eligible, restricted, reinstated or readmitted persons as defined by the Eligibility Rules, and is a currently registered member of a U.S. Figure Skating member club, a collegiate club or an individual member in accordance with the current rulebook. Please refer to the current rulebook for non-U.S. Citizens.

ELIGIBILITY RULES FOR BASIC SKILLS PARTICIPANTS:

The competition is open to ALL skaters who are current eligible (ER 1.00) members of either the Basic Skills Program and/or are full members of U.S. Figure Skating. To be eligible, skaters must have submitted a membership application or be a member in good standing. Members of other organizations are eligible to compete but must be registered with the host Basic Skills Program/club or any other Basic Skills Program/club.

Eligibility will be based on skill level as of closing date of entries. All Snowplow Sam and Basic Skills 1- 8 skaters must skate at highest level passed or one level higher and NO official U.S. Figure Skating tests may have been passed including or individual dances.

For the Free skate 1-6, Test Track and Well Balanced levels, eligibility will be based only upon highest free skate test level passed (moves in the field test level will not determine skater’s competitive level). Skaters may skate at highest level passed OR one level higher BUT not both levels in the same event during the same competition.

It is very important to the success of the competition that skaters are placed in the correct divisions. If, for whatever reason, the Local Organizing Committee discovers that a skater has been placed in a category that is below their class level, the chairman and referee will have theoption to move the skater into the proper division, even if this has to be done the day of the competition. This will ensure that every event is as fair as possible to the competitors. Please be sure to check for the director/instructor’s signature confirming the level of the skater.

ELIGIBILITY/TEST LEVEL FOR NON-QUALIFYING EVENTS :

EVENT: Showcase Events

Format: Showcase groups will be divided by number of entries and ages if possible. Vocal music is permitted and 6.0 judging will be used. Deductions will be made for skaters including technical elements not permitted in the event description.

Showcase categories may include:  Dramatic Entertainment: Programs should express intense emotional connection and investment in the music, choreography and theme concept through related skating movements, gestures and physical actions. Props and Scenery ARE permitted.  Light Entertainment: Programs should express a carefree concept or storyline designed to uplift and entertain the audience through related skating movements, gestures and physical actions. Props and Scenery ARE permitted.  Duets: are theatrical performances by any two competitors. Props and Scenery ARE permitted.  Interpretive: The program will be a performance choreographed by the competitor, unaccompanied and unassisted, to music that is supplied by the LOC. Programs should incorporate various elements of expressive movement and skating moves, to enhance the skater’s interpretation of the music, rather than technical elements.  For USFSA National Showcase Interpretive events the music will be played continuously during a 30-minute off ice session in a room. The room will be attended only by the adult monitor assigned to play the music, and the competing skaters. The music will be played twice during a warm-up on full ice. After the warm up skaters will go back to the room, with no music being played. Skaters will be brought to the ice when the previous skater finishes. All competitors in an event will interpret the same music. Props are permitted but must be brought into the room prior to listening to the music, and be taken to the ice only when the skater is called to perform. Props may not be pre-positioned on the performance surface.  For Basic Skills Showcase Interpretive events music will be played twice during warm up. After warm up, all skaters except first competitor will be escorted to a locker room with a fan running or another location where they can't hear the music. The escort must remain with the skaters and no one else is allowed with the skaters. the first skater will hear the music one more time and then perform a program to the music. The next skater will listen to the music for the third time at the rink entrance but must not watch as the first skater performs and on one except the ice monitor and the next skater are allowed at the entrance. No one is allowed to talk to, coach or make hand signals to the skaters during the event.  Interpretive Performance Times:  Pre-juvenile and below: 1:00 max  Juvenile thru novice: 1:30 max  Junior and senior: 1:30 max  Teen and young adult: 1:30 max  All adult events: 1:30 max

General event parameters: Show costumes are permitted, as long as they do not touch or drag on the ice. No bobby pins, feathers, hair accessories, or anything else that may fall to the ice and be hazardous to the skaters are allowed. A 0.1 deduction will be taken. Props and scenery must be placed and removed by unaided singles and duet competitors within one minute and by unaided ensemble contestants within two minutes for setup and two minutes for removal. A 0.2 deduction will be assessed by the referee against each judges’ mark for each five seconds in excess of the time allowed for the performance, for handling props and scenery and for scenery assistance.

This event is a standard U.S. Figure Skating Nonqualifying Competition Ice in the Pines 2016 – page 7

Performances will be judged from an entertainment standpoint for theatrical and artistic qualities. Technical skating skills and difficulty will not be rewarded; however, skating must be the major element of the performance and be of sufficient quality to support the selected theatrical elements. Unintended falls, poorly executed skating elements and obvious losses of control will reduce contestant’s marks. Jump difficulty is not rewarded in showcase; therefore jumps, if choreographed, should be performed with style, flow and confidence. Theatrical elements evaluated will include energy, poise, acting, pantomime, eye contact, choreography, form/extension and the use of props and ice.

Current guidelines and procedures for nonqualifying showcase competitions can be found at www.usfigureskating.org, under “Programs” on the National Showcase page. Basic Skills Showcase Event Levels
